Joe Cole

I'd prefer Cole centrally though in Gerrard's 'forward' position. Drop Stevie back to CM and get a DM.

Aquilani will have to rotate in for either Stevie or Joe.

Cole must surely be on the wings.

Whether he's on the left, with Maxi/Dirk on the right, or on the right with Dirk (or A.N. Other) & Torres up front, it's surely obvious he's not gonna play in the middle, ain't it?

*starts to worry a little bit*

He's not really a winger though is he? I've never really got why he plays there. I know he's not a CM though either. He should play in the hole I'd say, but does he score enough?

So if we stick to 4-2-3-1 I guess he'll move Gerrard back then?

Kuyt-----------------Cole------------Jovanovic

we need to do that in any case. gerrard has played a lot of years as an attacking midfielder and if we persist it will be like squeezing the last remaining drops out of him. the same with joe cole on the wing, he's played a lot of years there and there's not much more he can do except deteriorate.

the really clever managers can take players like that and know that its time to change their position or their role in the team and its like a new lease of life for them. im thinking of henry, sheringham, giggs, barnes, carragher. if we leave gerrard and cole where they are they're only going to look poor compared to what they once were and they'll get frustrated and lose confidence and motivation.

He's played mainly left or right winger for both England and Chelsea hasn't he? Thats were he 'll play for us.

The fact that he can play in a number of positions must surely be seen as a strength though.

Front five will come from :

Gerrard, Jovanovic, Kuyt, Maxi, Aquilani, Cole, Torres & Remy (expecting good things, if it happens).

I don't care how you work that out it's quality for 60 mins, and still so even after subs have been made. Plenty of room to carry an injury or two or play 2 games a week.

Just need good quality DM, LB (x2) and reserve keeper and we're sorted.

Lots of posters seem to include Remy and claim he'd be a good signing.

Am I the only one who's never heard of him before this month and hasn't seen him play?

Nope. Even the trustworthy YouTube scouting system has failed us.

He's been played there because that's where a lot of talented but relatively lightweight players end up in the Prem, even if they're not natural wingers, when their managers don't really know what to do with them. We've had them at LFC - Vlad Smicer's one example, as was McMoneyman IMO. Neither of those was one to get chalk on his boots if he could help it.

Whatever the reason, it's given Cole another string to his bow (and probably more England caps than he'd have got otherwise).

Is anyone else pretty sure that this 'in the hole' position is a modern fabrication, put together to massage the egos of twats who reckon they're too good to play on the wing but aren't disciplined enough to play in the centre?

That's not just restricted to England though.

Generally these kind of players have to be exceptional to play centrally throughout their career. And even then it's not always guaranteed.

I don't care if Cole knows where his best position is, so long as Roy does.

I hope Roy does. I'd hate to see brendan call joe "joe cunt" in every match thread

Arf

He's a player who has proved himself at the top level, albeit intermittently

I really am a bit 'meh' in some ways, because he hasn't really ever been quite as good as maybe people thought he could be, or as good as he thinks he is, but he certainly has talent

We shall see if - as someone else has pointed out - the idea of Joe Cole is rather better than the reality

i honestly think he'll do a job for us, however won't pull up many trees in the process. I am happy however about us signing a replacement for yossi who can unlock defences like he could. And one who (i pray) knows when to pass the ball when confronted with 3 defenders

A mate of mine e-mailed me earlier saying Chelsea had effectively given us Cole and £6 mill.for Yossi. Nice when you think of it that way.

I certainly prefer him to Casper, and I do think he was excellent a few years back, under Mourinho (who also seemed to be unsure about just how good he was at times)

I should imagine that Chelsea fans will be rather bemused at this 'swap', especially given the fee for Casper, but the issue with Cole at Chelsea was partly political, and I should imagine Casper's transfer there - if not helped - certainly wasn't hindered by being Jewish

Abramovich totally spat his dummy about Mourinho's Inter bombing them out of Europe, and also felt the squad was flabby and overpaid. Examples were always going to be made, and Cole couldn't have timed his contract negotiations at a worse time

Dont know anything about him really, except he looks like chamillionaire.

I’m a bit torn on this. I think Cole is a good signing in terms of a statement of intent, to our fans, to our players and to our rivals. That said, I don’t get the hype from a footballing perspective.

He’s a good player, capable of filling a number of positions. However, he has gone on record to state that he was unhappy playing wide left at Chelsea last season and wants to play central with his new team. Given the scramble to sign him, I’d guess Roy has told him he’ll play down the middle.
Seeing as he is coming in as Yossi is going, it’s interesting to compare their recent records. They show that (1) Yossi is capable of playing more games & (2) Yossi scores considerably more goals. Given that Yossi himself wasn’t able to play his preferred position for most of his time at LFC, this again does him favours. Obviously, Cole’s recent injury record is a concern especially given that our other big name players are hardly strangers to the treatment room themselves. Finally, I think the fact that Yossi is 30 softened the blow of him leaving for some people. Cole is 29 this year.

So, big outlay, we’ve haven’t addressed our wide issues (and, if we think we have, we’ll end up with a disgruntled player), we’ve complicated the Gerrard/Aqua issue, it’s a risk with fitness, it might be nothing more than a like-for-like. Plus side, Yossi was going anyway so this, at least, bolsters the quality in the squad.

Kewell or McAllister signing? Kewell for me, hope not though.
