Joe Cole

After playing with so many average players under both Ged and Rafa of course Stevie G would feel that way. He must be pinching himself everyday on his way to Melwood.

That's the "edge of your seat" type signing that we were promised!

Yes, I rather fancy Joe Cole might have more up his sleeve than Smicer, who CL goal apart, was fucking shite.

No he wasn't! He was a great little player who was usually badly-used, particularly when he was played on the wing.

If you are talking about crucial goals, I also remember him scoring a late match-winner at Anfield against Chelsea.

I remember that vaguely too Portly- did he score it or ping a cross in to someone in the box?

Maybe he was misused, but he was played all the time, even when doing nothing. I saw him to Houllier as some saw Kuyt to Rafa I guess. But all in all, he didn't do enough for me, or seem to have much in the way of individual skill in the locker. He scored much too rarely despite having a decent international strike rate.

He scored it, a fabulous volley in the final minute.

Vlad Smicer's problem wasn't a lack of individual skill (the other players made that clear when they spoke about what he could do on the training ground) so much as the fact that he had insufficient strength, physical or mental, for the pace and ferocity of English football. IMO that's why he got picked out wide so often, when that was never his best position. I thought his time might have come when we signed Jari Litmanen and the two of them made a great combo for a few games, but then Jari and GH fell out and Vlad's best chance slipped away. I was so glad his farewell appearance saw him become the only player to score twice in Istanbul.

I remember Fowler picking him out in a post match interview (I think it might have been West Ham at Anfield), after he'd had a really good game after an indifferent, injury plagued start to his Liverpool career, and Fowler himself saying that it was the sort of game we hadn't seen enough from Smicer.

I'm with Doc anyway, for his fleeting moments of brilliance and his misuse, he still didn't do enough for me. Always a nice guy though.

Drugs. It can be the only explanation really.

No, it's the "he's a nice English lad, with a proper name" modifier being applied.

He only needs to be a quarter the player Messi is to overmatch him, with this modifier.

And that's about right.

You touched on it there Mark: Crucial, and badly timed injuries Vladi was always playing catch up. He was a great player on his day, and a key figure when the Czech team were one of the best in the world.

Cole chose Liverpool after failing to agree a new deal at Chelsea, and Redknapp said: 'I don't know if Joe has any regrets about that. Maybe he felt he needed a change. Liverpool are a great club. Tottenham are a great club, but Liverpool have been up there for years.

'It was a move where the easy option was to stay in London, but he went for it and headed north. I said then I wished him all the best. I signed Joe when he was 11 years old. I've seen him grow up, and I've got all the time in the world for him.'

Redknapp revealed that signing Cole would have been at the expense of Rafael Van der Vaart, who has made a huge impact since being snapped up from Real Madrid.

'Joe could have come here and been fantastic for us, you never know,' he said.

'But, no, we wouldn't have taken Rafa had we taken Joe and, let's be fair, Rafa has done great

'It's early days for Joe at Anfield. Roy had a difficult start and now he's settling in. They'll turn the club around. They've got a new owner, who looks like he's got fortunes. The future should be good.'

Redknapp insisted he would have offered Cole regular first-team football had he moved to White Hart Lane.

He said: "He's a dangerous player and he loves playing football.

"He's a kid who loves being out there training and playing. He's got a great enthusiasm for the game
.

"For sure, he was coming here to play. It would have been up to him, obviously. If he came and didn't play well then obviously we wouldn't have played him regular but I was bringing him here to play.

"But it went out of my hands a bit. I could only talk to Joe but it was up to the club to do a deal with him and his agent.

"It sort of dragged on a little bit to be fair and in the end Liverpool came in. It probably surprised everybody that he would go up north.

"I think everybody thought: 'There's only us in London, we're going to get him'. But Joe went. He took the move."

To be fair, he's got a reason to this time.

He can still fuck off.

With Gerrard out, it really is Cole's chance to show us his mettle.

Unfotunatley thats always been the suspect part about him, he is brillliant at times, hes got skill creativity, can conjure something out of nothing but he has never in his career been a player that any team was able to rely on when the chips were down. I had hoped for the best when we signed him but I think we will be the club that confirms his status as a luxury player

Still, that doesnt mean he couldnt have a blinder against Spurs
