Yes, I rather fancy Joe Cole might have more up his sleeve than Smicer, who CL goal apart, was fucking shite.

No he wasn't! He was a great little player who was usually badly-used, particularly when he was played on the wing.
If you are talking about crucial goals, I also remember him scoring a late match-winner at Anfield against Chelsea.

I remember that vaguely too Portly- did he score it or ping a cross in to someone in the box?
Maybe he was misused, but he was played all the time, even when doing nothing. I saw him to Houllier as some saw Kuyt to Rafa I guess. But all in all, he didn't do enough for me, or seem to have much in the way of individual skill in the locker. He scored much too rarely despite having a decent international strike rate.

Vlad Smicer's problem wasn't a lack of individual skill (the other players made that clear when they spoke about what he could do on the training ground) so much as the fact that he had insufficient strength, physical or mental, for the pace and ferocity of English football. IMO that's why he got picked out wide so often, when that was never his best position. I thought his time might have come when we signed Jari Litmanen and the two of them made a great combo for a few games, but then Jari and GH fell out and Vlad's best chance slipped away. I was so glad his farewell appearance saw him become the only player to score twice in Istanbul.

You touched on it there Mark: Crucial, and badly timed injuries Vladi was always playing catch up. He was a great player on his day, and a key figure when the Czech team were one of the best in the world.

Unfotunatley thats always been the suspect part about him, he is brillliant at times, hes got skill creativity, can conjure something out of nothing but he has never in his career been a player that any team was able to rely on when the chips were down. I had hoped for the best when we signed him but I think we will be the club that confirms his status as a luxury player
