Neil, I know the signing of Cole has left some delighted, and others rather less than whelmed, buy you nake it sound as if we've signed, I dunno, a cross between Pennant and Riera
joe cole is a class player, I rate him very highly and I'm over the moon at the signing 🙂

my hope is that he lines up on the left rather through the middle.

for the record my previous post was more about our inability to buy a genuine winger in almost 2 decades than disparaging joe cole, a player that I rate.

Jova doesn't seem to be too headless. Just depends on whether he knows how to hug the touchline

I'd be very surprised if Cole has been told where he'll play. No one gets those assurances. He'll play from the left with Gerrard or Aquilani in the middle or my name isn't R.K.Maroon!

Only when the manager gets all of his players back and fit will he know where he wants to play everyone. Christ, he might stumble upon some magical way of shoehorning everyone in and playing shexy winning football.

Basically confirms the original info from my Spurs mate...

Harry rues Cole miss
Spurs chief wishes midfielder well

Last updated: 20th July 2010

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has wished Joe Cole well after he missed out to Liverpool for the player's signature.

Redknapp was keen on luring free agent Cole to White Hart Lane after he left Chelseaearlier this summer.

However, Liverpool won the race for the England star's signature with Cole set to sign a four-year deal at Anfield once he has completed a medical.

Redknapp admits Spurs tried their hardest to sign Cole, but that the 28-year-old snubbed their overtures for football reasons rather than money.

"We tried our very hardest to get him. The chairman made Joe a fantastic offer," Redknapp wrote in his column in The Lying Rag.

"But, in the end, we were competing with a club that has years and years of tradition and a reputation as one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Message

"I got a lovely message from Joe to inform me of his decision.
"He explained it. I think he wants to move for football reasons. He wants to be part of a transformation at Liverpool. I think maybe getting away from London and a clean break was part of it too. Whatever his reasons he has been genuine the whole way through. Joe is a bit of a throw-back, if you like.

"He has class and his manners are impeccable. I will always see him as the 11-year-old boy I first clapped eyes on at West Ham and I can only wish him all the best and hope his move is successful.

"Everywhere I went this summer Spurs fans were asking me 'Are we going to get him?' Daniel Levy pushed the boat out for him, he really did.

"No one can fault the effort we made to try to get him but it wasn't to be and I fully respect Joe's decision."

so joe cole 'ISN'T' earmarked for left midfield? marvelous. one day in our future we'll buy a winger who isn't;

* slow
* headless
* more interested playing through the middle

I know that day is in the far future but I'm convinced the day IS coming

wish we had got Adam Johnson >🙁

Roy has stated he wants to sign English, so maybe a a left back and left winger of English background is lined up, but who man

So he was on 120k a week at Chelsea, Tottenham offered him more and he came here for less.
Hmmmm I like this signing more by the minute. A fit and hungry cole could be a devastating weapon.
I did say 'could' be. If you look back to earlier in this thread Farkle you'll see that I'm the one who said he flatters to decieve more often than not, and his reputation is a lot better than his delivery. But if he has a point to prove and stays fit then we could have a beaut player. He's got everything in his locker tbf.

Cascarino's on our case again, saying in "The Times" today that Cole would have been better off going to Tottenham.

What a CV the guy has - bogus Irishman, bogus footballer, worse tipster even than Lawrenson and a name which translates loosely (if you'll pardon the expression) as "Laxative Boy".

I bet you he *has* a devastating weapon.

no, that's ngog

Some of the media are really bitter over this, I swear some of them wanted to see us dead and buried. Fair play to Redknapp, and even more respect to Cole, he's been made out to be money motivated in recent weeks, despite the big wages its nice to see his decision was football motivated.

we're paying him exactly what he was on at Chelsea with add-ons if we win the league or qualify for the CL

The others didnt match it and wouldnt give him 4 year deal

there does seem to be a bitterness when half decent people go to liverpool.
look at the reaction at fergie signing owen, 'oh canny move from the scot', 'shrewd'
what would that papers have said if liverpool have signed owen 'desperate', 'comical' etc

Yes they are indeed. I very briefly caught some of Talkshite this morning and it was just a string of whatever cunty presenters it was reading out texts slagging off Cole, calling us a small club etc etc etc.

No surprise. Certain parts of the media love London clubs. Someone like Joe Cole turning down a few of them at once and going somewhere that they are desperate to paint as a club in crisis was never going to go down well.

We get positive press when we are doing well. We were widely tipped to win the league, and many were hoping we would.

We aren't now, so we tend to get a lot of doom mongering, like every big club.

Man United don't get it, because they haven't done as poorly as we did last season in recent memory. Ferguson gets the benefit of the doubt a lot because pundits are stupid, and because he wins most of the time.

Are you perma cynical and negative?

West ham offered him 700k more a year and Redknapp has just said they offered him more than Liverpool. Don't let that stop yer though.

What i'm not liking so much is Cole being touted as the evidence of the clubs ambition and the reason for Torres and Gerrard to stay.... i also read it was 18.6M pound deal and im sure Purslow will be quick to acknowledge it.

I hope to god we don't go another fucking season with just the one striker.

Good signing no doubt, i just pray it isnt the only good one we make.

Oh absolutely. I have no doubt that should we start the season well and be top of the league by the end of September the media will be all talking about a rejuvenated Liverpool, Woy being a genius and Joe Cole being our saviour.

Well, apart from Mark Bright obviously.

Exactly.

Rebel's new signature HAS to be "Im a little bit fucking mental, and dont (under ANY circumstances) let the facts get in the way of having a good whiny bitch about something I cant even be bothered to read up on".

Its quite lengthy, but it works well.

Pay the media no mind. They are pissed because Roy pulled a rabbit out of the hat with Cole touted to joinn either the Goners or Scum.

Roy is all about making the right moves and doing what's necessary to make us competitive. This is going to turn out to be one of those dream transfer windows and the media are going to put a boot into us at the very first opportunity.

I can deal with it! Bring it on!
Well obviously i cont know for sure, but if you google about thats the figure most widely purported. And the suggestion was that he was leaving because they wouldnt offer him the 150k that Terry and Lampard were on.

When did Redknapp say that? dont know what West Ham offered but he'd never go there with the top clubs interested even if they offered him all the tea in china

So its not money motivated then? The redknapp interview is a few pages back.

Where did he say "we offered him more than he was getting at Liverpool"? They either matched it, offered less or wouldnt give him 4 years. Same with Arsenal

West Ham may have offered him loads but anyone with an ounce of ambition wouldnt bother with those clubs interested so yes, it wasn't about money but he's still got a very good contract.
