Joe Cole

Going back to positions, I really hope we haven't made Cole any assurances about where he'll play. He's likely to be picked for most games, as long as he's not horribly off form, and that's fine. But I really think he's more of a winger than a no10. Give him freedom to roam a bit, by all means, and let him, Gerrard and Torres find a bit of rhythm and chemistry together, but we're not going to build our entire formation around Joe Cole's idea of the kind of player he can be.

Obviously the personnel will change a little from game to game, but I'd say this was currently our best front five:

Mascherano - Aquilani

Kuyt - Gerrard - Cole

Torres

He wants to be part of a transformation at Liverpool

If this has something to do with getting new owners I'll cream myself.

Where does it show that they offered: Less, the same, or not 4 years?
We offered him the best contract in terms of length, money and prestige. Spurs have a rigid wage structure and if they break it their players will moan and want new deals, Arsenal MUST have offered him a worse terms for him to move out of London

Use your common sense

Do you really believe they offered him 100k a week gold plated contracts and he turned them down for us?

Thats all your opinion. In my mind we are the only team he would walk straight into.
Hmm, there's probably a bit of truth in all of the following:

We've paid him slightly more than he was on at Chelsea, but not what he asked for there (although has there been any details of signing-on fee?)

He wants to feel loved and has had certain guarantees from W.oy about his value and where he will play

He likes the fact that he's playing for LFC in the 7 shirt

He fancied a break from London, and didn't really want to play for a local rival of West Ham or Chelsea

He knew we had more need for him than perhaps Spurs.

I would swap Aqua and Gerrard but otherwise I agree.

Plus he's always talked quite highly of Anfield, the crowd etc..

always respectful of liverpool in past interviews. to be fair to cole he is pretty respectful of everyone, very much like ryan giggs.

has aqualini proven he can excel in a forward position? I'll put that another way, has he shown he can score or create more than gerrard in that position?

Well given that Gerrard had a 20-20 season not so long ago, I very much doubt it... however for the sake of argument, if the team as a whole performs better the decision shouldn't rest on simply who scores more.

I think that is pretty spot on Bren, and I admire him for moving out of London and giving it a go, which is what I thought the major issue would be.
I think he could be incredibly popular if he handles thing right

okay, has he shown the potential at any point in his career?
I see aqualini as someone who plays besides a traditional holding midfielder and links the defense to the attack, I don't think he has the strength to be a holding midfielder himself or the attacking threat to play off the striker.

to answer with a question has he had the chance to do so?

The answer is no, because he can't.

He isn't as fast, powerful or anywhere NEAR as good a finisher as Gerrard.

And he scored a grand total of 9 (that's NINE) goals in his entire Roma career. About 1 every 10 games or so.

Hope that's cleared it up for you. Bye.

Looks like the Cole signing has got the thumbs up from Steven Gerrard (who's obviously now decided to stay):

Stevie: Joe will be fantastic

Steven Gerrard today warmly welcomed the signing of Joe Cole after the midfielder agreed a four-year deal with the Reds subject to a medical.

"It's a great signing for us" said the Liverpool skipper. "I know Joe well through the England set-up and have seen first hand just how good a player he is.

"He's proved his ability over many years in the Premier League, sometimes against us - so it will be fantastic to play alongside him in a red shirt for Liverpool.

"I've told him what a great club this is and I'm sure Joe's the sort of exciting talent our fans will love to see."

Commenting for the first time on the media speculation surrounding his own future, Gerrard revealed: "I made it clear that I simply needed to concentrate on the World Cup and then have a decent holiday with my family.

"I wanted the chance to meet Roy Hodgson privately and having done so I'm very impressed with his plans for the future of the team.

"I've only returned to training today at Melwood with some of the other World Cup players, but I can't wait for the new season to start."

so joe cole 'ISN'T' earmarked for left midfield? marvelous. one day in our future we'll buy a winger who isn't;

* slow
* headless
* more interested playing through the middle

I know that day is in the far future but I'm convinced the day IS coming
I thought we had .... Jovanovic.

I don't think squad numbers should mean anything at all. In the old days, when the shirt number related to the position a player played in, the number was highly significant. In my opinion all the mystique about squad numbers should go out of the window! ;D

HaHa

The Mirror are reporting (albeit via Lawro) that we'll be lining up as a 4-2-3-1 with the attack as..

Cole Gerrard Janovic

Torres

However, Lawro knows as much as we do and his opinion is probably worth less..

One of the issues with Cole playing out wide -apart from the fact that he purports to dislike it - is that he has no pace

Mind you, that's pretty much expected for a wide player at Liverpool in recent years

I find that hard to believe, unless we're selling Kuyt. Unlike some posters, I don't think Dirk is the greatest player in the history of LFC, but he'll definitely start most of our matches.

True. Which is another reason we really ought to be in for £3m Craig Bellamy.

Disagree. Not only is it questionable whether there's now room for Bellamy in the squad, he's no wide player and would soon spit his dummy out if we tried to turn him into one.

I thought he played in the kind of way Henry used to play for the Arse, often pulling out wide to receive the ball but then coming inside and going for goal. He certainly wasn't a winger. If that's what we want, that what we shuld sign IMO. If it isn't, I still don't see a role for Bellers in our squad with Torres there and Jovanovic as back-up striker. At best he'd be Torres' understudy and I can't see him being happy with that.
