-----------Reina--------------

Magic-Carra-Skittle-Agger

-------Mascherano---------

Gerrard----Aquilani---Cole

------Torres--Huntelaar---(Or whatever decent striker we happen to bring in).

Its a formation that I think would be good but wont happen as Cole Gerrard and Aqua all want to play in the hole. really you can See Cole being stuck out wide whether he like it or not, unless we start playing the x-mas tree formation.

I’m a bit torn on this. I think Cole is a good signing in terms of a statement of intent, to our fans, to our players and to our rivals. That said, I don’t get the hype from a footballing perspective.

He’s a good player, capable of filling a number of positions. However, he has gone on record to state that he was unhappy playing wide left at Chelsea last season and wants to play central with his new team. Given the scramble to sign him, I’d guess Roy has told him he’ll play down the middle.
Seeing as he is coming in as Yossi is going, it’s interesting to compare their recent records. They show that (1) Yossi is capable of playing more games & (2) Yossi scores considerably more goals. Given that Yossi himself wasn’t able to play his preferred position for most of his time at LFC, this again does him favours. Obviously, Cole’s recent injury record is a concern especially given that our other big name players are hardly strangers to the treatment room themselves. Finally, I think the fact that Yossi is 30 softened the blow of him leaving for some people. Cole is 29 this year.

So, big outlay, we’ve haven’t addressed our wide issues (and, if we think we have, we’ll end up with a disgruntled player), we’ve complicated the Gerrard/Aqua issue, it’s a risk with fitness, it might be nothing more than a like-for-like. Plus side, Yossi was going anyway so this, at least, bolsters the quality in the squad.

Kewell or McAllister signing? Kewell for me, hope not though.

I liked Yossi, and thought Rafa utilized him poorly. However, I find it difficult to understand how this could be viewed as anything but an upgrade. Yes, Yossi tends to score more goals, but his form is patchy at best. His goals tend to be concentrated into purple patches. He'll score a hat-trick (usually against poor opposition) and then go missing for 10 games. Prior to his two recent injuries, Joe Cole was a regular starter for Chelsea and a consistent Premiership performer.

We could agonize over the statistics all day but you only have to have watched them both play to know that Cole is the superior footballer.

Ah yes Ryan, he has been eerily silent.

Cracking looking team with Maxi, Aquilani & A.N.Other Good Striker on the bench ......... however his manager has said Taiwo will not be sold and Masherano is on his way 100%. Back to the drawing board 😉

I have a feeling that vague promises may have been made to Cole, that he will play centrally just behind the striker.

Which means Gerrard either drops back a bit, or plays one the right of a 4231, with him on one side of Cole and Jovananananovich on the other.

Big risk moving him back from a goal-scoring perspective, but we all know he can play there

Question is, with who? I think Aquilani might be wondering where he fits in

That's just weird. No Kuyt, no Maxi, no Jovanovic .... and a player we haven't signed yet (supposedly as a back up to Torres) played out of position as on RW ?
Back to the drawing board.

Aquilani and Cole will do well to share the burden for the same role...considering their injury woes, that will be the best for both of them.

Is Joe Cole good enough to play a central role?

Is clever passing a forte of his?
[/quote]

Dunno, I always thought he was more capable of making clever runs from deep, into the box and putting players on the back foot. Which will be refreshing to see from a more central position. Hopefully either Jovanovic will make a big difference from wide, or we can add a quality wide attacker

If we needed a quality wide attacker, which of course we do, why didn't we just buy one and stick Gerrard or Aquilani in this position that Cole is supposed to deserve for some reason, having not really earned it consistently before, having been kept out of it by better players, (as he will here).

Cole will end up playing on the right, and not all the time. He'll get some home games in the center, where Aquilani looked good.

Competition is good though.

so joe cole 'ISN'T' earmarked for left midfield? marvelous. one day in our future we'll buy a winger who isn't;

* slow
* headless
* more interested playing through the middle

I know that day is in the far future but I'm convinced the day IS coming

Neil, I know the signing of Cole has left some delighted, and others rather less than whelmed, buy you nake it sound as if we've signed, I dunno, a cross between Pennant and Riera
