Joe Cole

Cecil has lied about virtually everything, including his purportedly excellent relationship with Benitez, when he was in actual fact briefing against him in the press.

He promised investment that didn't arrive, lied about available transfer funds, denied making statements that are on record and since he arrived he's sacked Benitez and employed the sexagenarian manager of Fulham, and I still don't know what the fuck this cunt has ever done to be, essentially, the most powerful man in Anfield

Maybe this direct quote from Roy has something to do with it Vlad?

"If you want to know about transfer targets, and how things are progressing, you'll have to ask (managing director) Christian Purslow because he's the man looking after those discussions, not me."
Yes, because that's what someone in Purslow's position normally deals with is it not?

Roy gives him the list, Purslow negotiates. People are reading far too much into things I think.

Lets just re-arrange that a bit......

"If you want to know about how things are progressing with transfer targets, you'll have to ask (managing director) Christian Purslow because he's the man looking after those discussions, not me."

There, any problems with that?

As I said people are reading to much into things on what people say in interviews, if it was a written statement that someone had thought about for more than a second, the argument might be more convincing

Roy speaks FIVE languages, he is not an idiot, if THATS what he wanted to say, he would not have put the uneccasary 'If you want to know about transfer targets' in the sentance!

Did his list have the names of Benayoun and Insua on it?

How about Joe Cole? He's had 'a chat' but no real 'discussions' but the man who then picks up the reins is Cecil?

How inspiring

He sounds like he's conducting interviews from his bath chair in a residential home in Birkdale

How Torres hasn't left already is a miracle

After Roys latest quote, the quote he came out with after talking to Torres is frightening.

“Christian Purslow was also at the meeting and chatted to Fernando for a lot longer after I left but my chat with him was only about football matters.â€

I don't really see that as a problem. Of course Roy spoke to him about football matters, as he is the football manager. Christian is chief executive, so will clearly want to speak to him as well.

It bloody is, whats Purslow got to talk with him 'a lot longer' about?

What Manager would let the man in charge of 'tranfer discussions' sit and talk to a member of his staff without him being there?

You do know that Hodgson had to leave the meeting because he had a plane to catch?

Purslow could have been speaking to him about anything. Investment. Players. Tours. Merchandising opportunities. Advertising shoots.

Jules > what? Every single utterance has been one of resigned, affable bemusement. He's a joke
Brendan, I wouldn't disagree about the tone of those utterances. The question is what's prompted it. I don't believe Roy will have been unaware of the conditions under which he'd be expected to operate, because I don't believe those appointing him would have left him in any doubt about them. My guess is that Roy's simply being completely up front when asked questions, because that's his style anyway and possibly also because he wants to distance himself from the previous approach (witness that remark about "disenchanted" players).

It's not an isolated incident. Every single thing he's said in two weeks can be roughly translated as follows;

I have no power or authority

I don't make any decisions

I don't really know what's going on

Now, dress that up as positively as you fucking want, but when was the last time you heard any Liverpool manager talk like that?

Or indeed any decent manager in the Premiership.

He's not even talking like there's a mutual, agreed decision-making process.

He's just a baffled, neutered old man doing what he's told

The Official website has an edited version!

Roy Hodgson has revealed he is quite happy to see speculation linking Liverpool with a possible swoop for England star Joe Cole.

The midfielder is on the look out for a new club after leaving Chelsea at the end of last season, and he has been linked with a move to Anfield.

Indeed, bookmakers have suspended betting on which club Cole will join next season.

However, Hodgson was quick to play that speculation down and said: "I'm not a betting man so that doesn't actually play a big part that betting is suspended.

"I don't even know enough about betting to know what that means.

"As far as I know, Joe Cole is still a player looking for a club.

"I know we've been connected with him, and it's good to know we're connected with players of that quality, but I don't have anything to report on the subject.

"I haven't had any discussions with him, but I had a brief chat a while back."

I wonder why they left out the worrying bits?

Ye because thats the only place people will be able to read it.

I can't pretend I'm not in the slightest bit concerned by Hodgson's recent interviews. He sounds out of his depth to me, which is worrying with the season so close. But, as Vlad and Sheik keep saying, all that's actually *happened* so far is Yossi's left (a shame IMO) and Insua's been sold for €5m (a decent sum for a player who was one of our obvious weak points last season).

Now, IF Torres was sold to Chelsea next week, or IF we lost our first home game of the season to Arsenal 3-0, then I might jump on the armageddon bandwagon, but for the moment it's all just (fevered) talk. It's a bit naff to tell a bunch of Scousers to 'calm down', but some of you really need to.

I personally tend to think he's just acting like he has no say in anything to deflect the questions. Everyone expects him to be a lameduck, why not play the part?

Could be wrong. Time will tell.

Roys not an idiot, agreed. SO.... if he was trying to make the point that you believe he would have used the word OR, not AND. plain and fucking simple.

If you want to know about transfer targets, AND how things are progressing.........
If you want to know about transfer targets, OR how things are progressing.........

not going to sink in is it...............

I said I'm waiting to see how things pan out but have concerns about the board. I guess that isn't allowed anymore? Maybe I should change my stance to 'everything is peachy' to gain popularity...

Its fun to watch though. Like watching some of the more special cases on BGT and waiting for Cowell to rip into them. Trouble is, Cowell is performing in this version of things.
