Joe Cole signing for #LFC looks imminent - (much needed) good news for the club. Won't cure all its ills but still a good signing.

Can this actually happen now? Fuck me if it does!

I am not familiar with UK newspapers and their attitude towards LFC but I am assuming Daily Mail hates us

Liverpool close in on 'money-led' Joe Cole after Chelsea exit

Joe Cole returned from holiday last night with the taunts of Carlo Ancelotti ringing in his ears that he had quit Chelsea for financial reasons.

The England international is expected to make a decision on his future in the next 48 hours, with Liverpool favourites to secure his signature.

Bookmakers yesterday suspended betting on Cole’s next destination as Anfield boss Roy Hodgson confirmed he had held talks with the playmaker, though sources close to the player have denied any deal has been struck.

But that did not stop Chelsea boss Ancelotti from claiming cash had been at the forefront of Cole’s mind when he rejected a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

‘The problem was economic,’ said Ancelotti, ‘There is a problem between the club and Joe Cole, not me. We have spoken about this but when the problem is over money, then it is not my problem.

‘This is the life of footballers. Cole, like Michael Ballack and Juliano Belletti, did a fantastic job, but it’s time to move on.’

There is no doubt Cole’s arrival on Merseyside would give Liverpool a huge boost. Hodgson confirmed initial talks had taken place, saying: ‘I’m not a betting man so it doesn’t even register with me that betting has been suspended.

‘I know we have been connected with him and it is good to know that we are connected with players of that quality but I don’t have anything further to report on the subject.

‘I haven’t had any discussions with him. Managing director Christian Purslow is the man looking after the transfers, not me.’

The offer by the Anfield club, though, is not the largest on the table. The £4.5million-a-year package is £700,000 a year short of that on offer at West Ham.

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has always been reluctant to shell out huge sums on transfer fees, although he is less reticent about players’ salaries.

Spurs and Arsenal are also not out of the running and a switch to either would enable Cole to maintain an interest in Champions League football and not cause any major domestic upheaval.

But the Hammers now look a distant fourth in the running and the midfielder seems set to make a mockery of Ancelotti’s barbs and rebuff the highest offer to advance his career.

Ancelotti also claimed that he is no rush to add Liverpool’s Fernando Torres to his squad, saying he has sufficient firepower at his disposal without having to break the bank to land the Spaniard.

Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has still not responded to a voicemail left by Hodgson last week, which adds to speculation that he might be leaving to join Inter Milan.

Good news (if true) about Chelsea 'losing interest' in Torres. That suggests his agent's told them he wants to stay at Liverpool - a bit similar to Real Madrid 'losing interest' in Gerrard.

Interest in Torres has wained because he is unable to stay fit for any length of time. Who's going to splash out a monster transfer fee when there is so much incertainty about his fitness? He's a fabulous player but only in spurts. Hopefully we will get a backup soon.

What's anti-Liverpool about that?

The headline appeared a bit childish when I first read it.

It's the Daily Mail.

Oh yeah, sorry - you said you're not familiar with UK newspapers.

However, I stand by my statement - I don't think it really needs that much explaining.

Think an English print version of Fox news

Good news, something to cheer amongst all the gloom.
Let's hope the deal can be done and soon.

After 6 years of bullshit free signings it makes a nice change.
A very positive start for Hodgson/Purslow, our new dream team!

May I also join the welcome committee for Crump. We need more of his type to counter balance the raving lunatics who seem hell bent on making fools of themselves more with each passing day.
I'm going to have to stop you there, in what way are people proving themselves lunatics? so far reading this thread the people not on the 'liverpool board bandwagon' have said;

torres and gerrard may/will be sold - any proof that isn't going to happen?
the who aren't footballing men are calling the shots - any proof this isn't the case?
roy is a yes man brought in to do what ever the board request - any proof this isn't the case?
the money from sales wont be reinvested into the club - any proof this isn't the case?

how is any of the above proven to be hysterical nonsense?
The Burden of proof lies with the prosecution.
Thats your lot.

The Spurs chief is focusing on Bellamy as Chelsea free agent Cole opens talks with Liverpool and tries to sort out a deal with them on around £90,000-a-week. Spurs are resigned to Cole picking Anfield ahead of them.

Rumour on Twitter that Spurs baulked at a £6m signing on fee, but we coughed up

If that's the case it's a massive mistake. He'd end up costing significantly more than Yossi, he's no better, and he's an injury nightmare.

I can't imagine what Cole has done in his career to deserve 6 million to go anywhere. Jesus. Where markets are concerned, there's no free lunch.

Not sure about that Farky, if Cole had a couple of years left on his contract he would surely be a £15 player.
I was as big a fan of Yossi as anyone, but Cole is a much better option. I think he will be great for us and will be seen as a bit of a flag-ship signing - if it does come to pass.
Anyways, as I said it was only off some tyke on Twitter so would not read too much into it

Well think of it as a swap, as we got that signing on fee for Yossi.

And anyway, fuck the money - it doesn't matter. It isn't ours. If the squad is better, good. Worse, bad. The finances are someone elses problem.

Cole has averaged nearly 30 (league) games a season in his time at Chelsea. Hardly an injury nightmare. He's just been unfortunate that his two major (and entirely unrelated) injuries have come in fairly close succession. And he's significantly better than Yossi.

If he does come here, I think you might find yourself retracting a lot of this next season.

Don't see the problem either, it's still a pretty cheap deal for a player that we need in more ways than one, as I said the signing on fee was only a rumour, but I don't have a problem with it of it is true.
Besides it's me and Crump paying for it anyways

Why did everyone question the purchase of Aquilani again? Something about limited finances, risk, injury ridden... I'm drawing a blank.

Again, it's like we are talking about different players, because I just don't see it. Joe Cole a flagship signing? What on earth has he done to deserve that billing, or this amount of financial reward, you know, other than be an Englishman who does stepovers? If this were true, he'd be less productive than Benayoun, but we'd be paying more for him.

I have to think that the sign on fee isn't accurate, but we'll still pay a lot for him.

I keep saying the signing on fee has to be taken with a pinch of salt.
A flag-ship signing, well yes OK, perhaps a bit OTT, but in our current position, a current England international, that several top clubs have been after , and the sort of player we need that knows the premier league and will not need a season to settle, is a bit of a coup in my book, sorry you are underwhelmed , but I look forward to seeing him in a red shirt next season, and really hope it happens

I think cole is a GREAT signing. we have struggled to break down stubborn defenses for years and cole definately someone who can help in that area. fucking hell, selling yossi and getting cole...PINCH ME!
