Joe Cole

Not open for further replies.
Cole has returned from holiday last night. We've offered 90k p/w over three years and we've asked for a decision this week.

I'd rather pass. There are reports suggesting he wants to be used in the centre which is where the captain and Aquilani play. It's a lot of money to pay in wages for someone who doesn't seem to fill a gap in the team.

For once I'd have to disagree. If this is going to be an issue I'd have to say that, though not such a confirmed critic of Aquilani as some on here, I'd sooner sell him and sign Cole, who we know can do it in the Prem.

There's too much negativity around at the moment. Aquilani showed promise last season and he could turn out to be excellent this season now that he has settled in.

I'd wager most, other than those who think having injury problems means you're shit.

I saw things that alarmed me about Aquilani last season, but regardless, it's a bit silly to write him off entirely, based on last season.

It could/should be like a new top-class signing, couldn't agree with my bro' more.
I have high hopes for him too this year, with a full injury free pre-season behind him and a new manager.
I saw enough, in the limited chances he was given, to see there was a class player inside there.

Yeah Neil, who gives a a fuck about our 25 year old Italian international who will cost us 18million, who is now finally fully fit.

Why have people washed their hands of him? He was a breath of fresh air at times last season in his brief cameo's.

Again, why does it have to be an either/or scenario for aquilani and Cole?

Cole has played most of his football for Chelsea on the left of midfield, a position we're about to be sorely lacking in. It's true there have been murmurs that he wants a more central role and he might get his wish some of the time, but he's surely going to be under no illusions about ousting Gerrard from his favourite spot. If he does end up playing a more central role I'm sure Lucas would be the one to make way rather than Aquilani for an attacking midfield slot.

I'm amazed that there's not more excitement on here at the prospect of signing a top-class proven premiership performer, wanted by Arsenal and Spurs. He's one of the most skilful players in the league in his prime. Hodgson/Purslow should be congratulated if they pull this off given we haven't Champions League football to offer top players.

What more do people want?

If we can have possession and play some pass and move, that's two things he does very well. We have precious little of that in the side. We need width though. Kuyt and Cole will make for some really narrow play.

We have been reading a lot on the forum over recent weeks about what people don't want, but precious little about what they do want!

There is an assumption that Kuyt will be in there Farky, I think Maxi and Cole are more likely pairing, that is of course if Cole arrives, the right noises are coming out, but it is still a pretty long shot in my eyes

I want moves to be made in the transfer window. Mascherano needs to go, he has shown no commitment and has not been returning Roys calls he can go. That gives us £30 million (hopefully) on top of whatever budget we have, and hopefully the sale money from Benayoun and Insua.

That could be a good warchest if there are no shenanigans from the board which there probably will be.

Initial budget: £15million, Insua: £5 million, Benayoun £6 million and Mascherano £30 million equals £56 million, plus other fringe players could be sold. Broughton said we get to keep the money from players sold. So if thats not bollocks then we could have this much to spend.

Cole on a free, Banega to replace Masch which will cost £10 - £15 million. That leaves £40 odd million to sort out a striker, a left back and a left winger. That kind of money will make good players affordable. Remy seems to be going for £10 million.

We could see, Cole, Banega, Remy, Turan and Figeroa coming in which would strengthen the squad and first 11.

Obviously all of this is hypothetical and nothings nailed on but Portly those are the kinds of moves id like to see the club making. Addressing the damage and weaknesses of the squad.

I hope it would be Aquaman because a midfield trio of Gerrard, Aquaman and Cole fills me with dread. Someone has to defend (although ideally it would be a new player alltogether that isn't Lucas).

EDIT - Cole will only be a good signing if he stays (relativity) injury free. If he gets another long term injury we are going to look back at this signing as a complete disaster, which we can't afford to do with our current financial situation.

Me too, and Maxi on the right, although they are both capable of interchanging.

That being the case whoever plays alongside Torres could do with having some pace

Yeah, ideally:

Assuming our best players stay, obv.

Jules- should we move Gerrard to create space for Cole to play in his favoured role?

[/quote]

I think we should "mix and match" as circumstances require, Wilko. At times yes, Gerrard may well be needed in CM, but there may well also be times when Cole is needed out wide, even if we try to minimise that happening. He's going to have to accept that much at least.

The fact we're arguing the toss, with the potential to end up leaving out players like Kuyt, Aquilani etc is a good thing. Amazing what difference a couple of key additions can make, if we get them.
