Cole has played most of his football for Chelsea on the left of midfield, a position we're about to be sorely lacking in. It's true there have been murmurs that he wants a more central role and he might get his wish some of the time, but he's surely going to be under no illusions about ousting Gerrard from his favourite spot. If he does end up playing a more central role I'm sure Lucas would be the one to make way rather than Aquilani for an attacking midfield slot.

He's really intelligent and was a bright spot at the tail end of the season, the only issue (as said) is a lack of a natural wide man, but Johnson could help.

RB: Johnson
LB: Someone who can defend and attack, pacy would be even better
DM: More mobile and pacy than Masch (if we're going to sell him)/Lucas, even
CM: Gerrard/Aquilani/Cole/Lucas, even/Shelvey
RW: Superhotshitplayerwhocanplaybothflanks/Kuyt/Maxi
LW: Cole/Superhotshitplayerwhocanplaybothflanks/Kuyt/Maxi/Babel, even
CF: Torres/Remy/Kuyt/Babel, even

I really like Maxi. He compliments player around him. His first touch game is effective and he is intelligent on the ball. Same for Aqualani, if people are in positions to receive the ball, Aqua and Maxi have the ability to find them. I bet Gerrard like playing with them as they have a give and go approach to their play. Maxi puts in a good shift too and will play on either flank if required. An excellent free transfer.
 
Babel has done more than enough to prove he should be sold this window ... where are you Birmingham ? 10M is good enough !

It's not good enough to just have pace from the FBs - when we have a break we need palyers capable of taking advantage of that. Torres & Gerrard aside we don't have anyone (and Remy surely won't be a starter even if we do sign him).
 
Since we have a RB who likes to bomb forward, perhaps we need a solid ultra defensive LB to balance us out?
