January targets

What would you say we needed in January to continue our push?

A left back
Another defensive midfielder
Another quality attacking mid/wide player

We're not gonna get that in January though, but we need those roles and more at some stage.

That's a fair list.

It has to go by what is available in the market in Jan and filling those as a priority.

But cutting Cissokho's deal short will be a good start.....

Song and Salah/Konoplyanka is a good start.
A left back can wait until january.

We're also after Montoya on a free

Would like to see us going for one of Konoplyanka or Yarmolenko. I think they are in the attainable bracket.
We need a player who can carry the ball into dangerous positions for us. A random example of this is Yossi. He was excellent at doing this. Coutinho is back and hopefully he'll be our outlet for this.

I'd also like a new shiny midfielder. Don't know anything about Salah. Someone in the Paul Pogba mould but you know, affordable and realistic.

@FabRomano21: Liverpool is interested in Nemanja Matic (Benfica). Price: 28M £ (48M £ is releasing clause). Napoli has started contact for him too #LFC

That is of course what we need but I think we'll sign a few young and upcoming cbs since we have shifted from gks to cbs.

Is that to cover for Lucas or do you see a need to replace him at times?

Both really.

If we can get somebody better than him, then why shouldn't we aspire to do that? We should always be looking for players that will improve the side.

I've never professed to claim that Lucas is the best footballer on the fucking planet, just that he's highly undervalued and does a far better job than many people think.

Liverpool target Konstantinos Mitroglou with Brendan Rodgers desperate for January buys to sustain top four challenge

Targets include Greek forward Konstantinos Mitroglou, with the hope that he could have the same impact as January arrivals Daniel Sturridge and Coutinho

Sales: Sturridge and Coutinho impressed after their winter arrivals, and Rodgers wants to repeat that success

Andrew Powell

Brendan Rodgers will plead his case with Liverpool’s owners for two big January signings to deliver Champions League football.

After getting off to a flyer this season, the Anfield boss was brought down to earth with a bump last weekend after his side were outplayed at Arsenal.

The Reds’ American owners have tried to introduce a new financial reality at the club by stressing the need to live within their means...which will likely see far less money available than a year ago, when they spent more than £20million on Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Countinho.

But after the blunt reminder of the distance Liverpool still have to travel to even compete for a top-four place, Rodgers has stressed the importance of the upcoming transfer window.

He said: “The Arsenal game was another indication that we need to keep improving our team in order to be able to compete.

“The focus is on bringing in players that can come straight in and improve our team.
“We did that last year and benefited from that.”

It may be a gamble, but the club desperately needs the extra riches the Champions League will bring, and they may not get a better chance to rejoin Europe’s elite.

“Last year we made two great signings that came in and gave us that injection of quality that we needed. We will look to do that this January if we can,” he added. “We got Daniel Sturridge – who has been brilliant – for the same money as Wilfried Bony went to Swansea.

“And a lot of people had never heard of Coutinho, but you can see he’s a top young player.”

Konstant threat: In-form striker Mitroglou

Perhaps Rodgers’ toughest battle will be with his own board, with MD Ian Ayre indicating this week that there may not be as much money in the kitty this New Year.

The Reds boss wants a striker and a midfielder, and has targeted Greece centre- forward Konstantinos Mitroglou, who could be available for as little as £6m despite having a stunning season so far with Olympiakos.

Liverpool have the opportunity to consolidate their place in the top four with the visit to Anfield of Fulham today.
Rodgers added: “I haven’t heard about spending restrictions.

“We know the areas we need to improve, but it’s all about timing, affordability and can we do it?”

We need a first choice left back, cover for Johnson, cover/competition for Lucas, and someone for a wing forward/AM role that can score goals.

Shaw would be absolute silly money. can't see us splashing out over 20mil on a LB

If we are going the silly money route, lets ask Rafa to repay the favour we did him by giving him Reina for nothing and put in a bid for Hamsek, Id take him over pretty much any other attacking mid out there right now, get Skrtel to have a work in his ear

Plus he has an awful haircut so hed fit in perfectly

Yeah, agree with that. Look at our first team yesterday - bar Gerrard, the midfield is the weakest element and would benefit from upgrades on Lucas and Henderson

Tht next person to suggest a defender gets a wedgie. We need midfield options, and nothing else

We really should think about selling one of those CB's. We've got:

Agger
Skrtel
Toure
Sakho
Wisdom
Ilori
Kelly

- All of whom could play right now in the Premier League. And then a bunch of ressies who I've not seen admittedly.

Do we really need that many?

We've got 1 right back, 1 defensive midfielder, and half a left back. Squad's a bit lopsided and shit.

Why not sell one of them whilst they have some currency, and shove it towards an area that we do need filled?

Who are the most dispensible Ryan? Agger's vice-captain but injury prone, Skrtel is inconsistent. Toure is old so he'll only be here til next season. Sakho cost a lot so I guess he's a mainstay. That leaves Wisdom who'll be out on loan for a couple of years, Illori who i've never seen and Kelly who looks like he's been gangraped by some footballs

That's only 4 CBs who are 1st team ready, and given that we'll switch to 3 at the back occasionally i'm happy with what we've got. Unless an offer comes in for one of them for far more than it's worth i'm not sure I see the point in weakening the squad on a gamble further up the pitch

I say sell Skrtel to a UCL club that badly needs a defender, especially since he isn't cup tied. Playing it right, we could get well over market value.

I'd say Agger, but then no one would be surprised.

We could still get 15M odd for him I' guess. He's what, 29? We've proven we could do ok without him, and there are half a dozen others who could replace him.

That 15M could go to a top class left back, which we need more than a 7th centre back.

It's just a suggestion.

Toss up between Skrtel and Agger.
Agger was given the vice captaincy by Rodgers, so it's more likely that its Skrtel.

Do we need a top class left back? Not a priority imo.
I'd rather we look for a top class winger or midfielder.
