Former Liverpool star slams 'diabolical' Torres

By ESPNsoccernet staff

September 13, 2010

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has been branded "diabolical" and accused of lacking the desire to perform at the top level by former Anfield hero Jamie Redknapp.

Torres, who has struggled for form since suffering an adductor injury last season, looked off the pace during Liverpool's 0-0 draw with Birmingham at St Andrews and struggled to make an impact against centre-backs Roger Johnson and Scott Dann.

The Spain international has been widely criticised since the World Cup and Redknapp is the latest expert to lay into Torres.

"Fans will suffer to a certain extent when you give the ball away, but they won't suffer a lack of effort," Redknapp said. "Out there for 45 minutes today he (Torres) has been terrible. He hasn't got hold of the ball, he hasn't chased, he's got frustrated, he could have been booked, he's been diabolical.

"I'm his biggest fan, and of course you have to give Johnson and Dann credit, but he's shown no appetite for the game. He's looked frustrated, sloppy, lethargic. I know people talk about his rustiness, but he looked fed-up."

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson leapt to the defence of Torres - who scored the winner against West Bromwich Albion last month with his only goal of the season - and insisted the striker will get "better and better."

"Fernando came into the centre on a few occasions and, when he did that, he caused havoc," Hodgson said. "You've got to give the back four of Birmingham credit. They worked very hard to contain him and pressurise him.

"But he is looking much fitter with every game and I thought he looked dangerous and I thought, the longer the game went, the stronger he became. I think he is working hard for the team. He is a constant thorn in the side of defenders.

"We know he lacks match training. He missed matches at the end of last year and during the World Cup. But I'm not at all concerned about Fernando Torres. He will get better and better."

Anyone else think his head has been turned and he's thinking of pastures new?

I can't help but feel he's already left.

It's more than that though isn't it Spidey.

His body language gives away the clues.

The next Masher saga?

no striker, regardless of how brilliant will be able to hurt teams if he isn't given decent service.

Yep. Besides which, Jamie Redknapp is an outspoken, brainless bellend.

Torres has only played a couple of games, he's looking sharper but as said, there's zero service behind him, so if he looks a bit fucked off, is it any wonder?

At the end of the day, he stayed and there's a long season ahead, I wish people would stop fucking scaremongering.

In his first couple of seasons he didn't have service either so I don't think that's such a good argument.

He had hunger and desire - and it's most definitely not been on show at present or at the tail end of Rafa's demise.

He had better service than he's getting now though, and to be fair, in his first season teams weren't wise to him, they are now. He'll score goals, but we need a much better midfield than the one we had out yesterday for that to happen. When he was scoring before we had a midfield containing the likes of Masher, Alonso, Riera, Yossi, who all would have been welcome ahead of the four out there against Birmingham.

* you have a six man outfield

* two of those 6 are creative non entities

* the two wide players of the 6 lack the pace or the skill to beat players and deliver good quality

* one of those six outfield players has to drop deep to even get a sniff of the ball

leaving on outfield who is the only constant threat on the opposition goal.
so as a defender for the opposition, who do you mark?

this is why torres is getting fucked off and who can blame him?

Like us, I bet Torres saw yesterdays midfield and thought we haven't a fucking chance.

His attitude is very questionable, however, and this has been the case for far too long.

He's getting very primadonna on us.

Fuck me, it amazes me how many people fall for this media bullshit. Torres isn't sulking cos he's looking to move, he's simply nowhere near match fit & his confidence is understandably shot.

It'll be 5/6 games before we see the real Torres back, but he'll be banging them in again.

I keep telling myself he's just frustrated by his own form and the team's, that he still loves the club and wants to do his best for us, and that when he gets his form and confidence back, he'll once again play like he did in his first season for us.

I'd fully agree, Jon, had he not looked so sharp for Spain the other week.

And since then he's played a full 90 minutes & flown halfway round the world & back. That's tiring whether you play or not.

I don't know what's up with him, but I'm not going to be taking hints from the thickest twat in football. I mean think of the competition and still being the thickest. Stupid bellend with spray on kecks. Such an irrelevant piece of shit.

we can only hope jamie gets it right with regards to who played in the liverpool midfield against manu last season if asked. poor old jamie, 'xabi pulling strings in the liverpool midfield'. indeed, jamie? ha ha that was classic.

They played against Lichenstein....

Shut up Redknapp, like Collymore trying to carve a name out for himself in the media by outspoken, Torres needs time I think and a fcking midfield for starters.
Against an organised premiership team, one world class striker can't do it all.
Rednknapp would be better sending naughty pics of his wife and doing WII ads then punditry, classless Chelsea loving knob.

I rarely agree with Redknapp, but he's right on this occasion, and like Squiggs said, Torres seemed fine whilst he was playing for Spain.

As someone said, it was against Liechtenstein, with the likes of Xavi, Xabi & Iniesta feeding him, not Lucas, Jovanovic and Poulsen so lets be a fair to him.

Torres wants to leave. End of.

[/quote]

So why did he not leave this summer then?
