Whats more important to individual sportsmen, winning slams/majors or being number 1?
I notice that Caroline Wozniaki is world number one and has yet to win a major, ditto Westwood and Donald in the golf.
Do you think they would look back and think i was the best in the world or would regret not having the gold to back it up.
In the past i remember Colin Jackson being the number 1 hurdler in the world but never winning the olympic gold.

There's been a bit of a trend like that in women's tennis since the ranking system changed. Basically, it's the ones who enter the most tournaments and accrue the most ranking points who sit at the top of the rankings. Safina was world number 1 for a while and she's bottled it any time she's got to a major final. Wozniaki isn't that good a player either. The very top players have other interests (such as kids, or fashion, for instance), and have already proved themselves at the highest level. Therefore they have no interest in turning up to every tournament - they just turn up for the slams. Much easier life.

I think that whatever the sport, the title of number 1 player in the world really doesn't hold much gravitas until you've got the silverware to back it up. If you have the silverware, the number one ranking is a nice finishing touch. If you don't, it's all a bit superficial.
