If Not Suarez .......

Given the issues with the release clause in the previous contract when Suarez tried to use it, if one exists in the new contract, then it will probably be very much of the type of "if a club bids £X m the club accepts the offer".

Sorry my previous post wasn't very clear. You would need to strengthen up front without Suarez.

But without Suarez you are still probably better in terms of attacking talent than you are in other areas of the pitch. Spend £30m on additional striker and the remaining £X m less the £30m and you would probably have a stronger team.

There is no clause according to both Suarez and his agent although they are not the most reliable of sources given, as you said, last year.

im not massively fussed either way, he's one of the best strikers in the world but i dont think we really need a player as good as him, we can easily still win the league with good players with the great style of play we have going for us

Really?
Most goals and 2nd most assists in the league. I'd say that he's vital to our team.

i wouldnt say vital, im probably downplaying his importance to us a bit but didnt we win the majority of games he didnt play? i might be chatting shit cause im too lazy to look it up, plus even if it is true i suppose he may not have missed that many games anyway and it could mean fuck all, er, hang on im shitting on all my points here. Nevermind. Carry on everyone.

Jesus...
Anyway, selling Suarez will be a massive step backwards. I'm not sure that one player can replace him.
Sanchez is a step in the right direction.

i dont think losing suarez would have as much of a negative impact as you are suggesting, I would go as far to say that we would still have every chance of winning the league next year without him if the right players are bought

That's what we said when Xabi left.
I'd get that young Danish striker from Ajax.

Well, anything is possible if the right players are bought but it's very hard to replace players like Suarez. Utd failed to really replace the quality Ronaldo gave them, Spurs went a bit mad with all the money they got from Bale (though Lamela could still work out I suppose which would make things look a lot better for them) and we know all about our problems in the past.

I don't think we really need to pull up stats to try and determine how effective Suarez is a) because we kinda know and b) it doesn't paint the whole picture. The stats don't quite give you a sense of that never say die attitude, the way in which his running helps the rest of the team, the effect his ability to turn players has on the game overall and so forth and so forth.

Rodgers justified the sale of Carroll (not that he really had to) by saying he was building the attack around Suarez and so you have to consider that also when selling him. In all likelihood we are not going to be able to get a like for like player so not only are you losing your best player and one of the best players in the world, but the lynchpin of the team.

Surely whoever out of barca or Madrid get him guarantees themselves the league title for the next x years.

He would absolutely tear Spain a new one, I almost want to see him go just witness the devastation ..

I'm not so sure. He's a player who thrives on intensely competitive matches. Aside from the Real-Barca and maybe Atletico games, where's the challenge for him? It's not the environment to push him to his absolute peak, far from it.

So he will only excel in a non dominant side? That's a bit of a bizarre concept.

He spent the past 10 months shitting all over dross prem teams, I'm sure he would do the same , only possibly more effectively In Spain

Eh, when on earth did I say that? The premiere league is far more competitive than La Liga. And what 'non dominant' side are you talking about? Us? The side that nearly won the league last season?

Well okay barca/ real and Atletico or city, Chelsea & arsenal?

Three teams could win la liga going into the final two matches of the season, that sounds fiercely competitive to me

Regarding dominant, one swallow doesn't make a summer. Let's wait and see how things develop this year, eh?

I just don't agree with your appraisal of Suarez and what he needs in a club / employer.

I'm not talking about how many big clubs there are in each league, although there are more here than there, but how competitive each match is. The run in to last season in Spain was an exception, as you well know. There's so much self-flagellation in this thread - it's all about trying not to feel so badly hurt later on, yes, I get it - it's hard to hear the logic for all the shrieks and screams, but come on people, get a grip.

The league itself isn't as competitive as ours, but he gives himself a much better chance of winning the Champions League there.

That, added to the fact that Barcelona and Real Madrid are probably the two biggest clubs in the world (particularly so amongst South American and Latin countries) then it's not hard to see why he'd want to go. And that's without discussing the various personal factors that may make him want to go there.

We never thought we'd replace Torres, so it's not the absolute end of the world if we get 80M odd for him.

That's what Michael Owen thought.

Barca are in transition. But keep it up and we'll soon sound like we're QPR.

Transition, yet they'll qualify for the Champions League every season with the greatest player to ever play the game and young, highly rated talent alongside him. If they're in transition then so are we. Gerrard about to retire, with lots of young talent coming through, some of which may or may not go on to play at the highest level. Similar stages perhaps, but they (Barca) offer a greater chance of silverware.

The rose tinted glasses are reassuring to a point. Is it that hard to fathom that a native Spanish speaker, whose wife lived in and has family in Spain, who grew up wanting to play for one of the big two there, in a country with a similar culture, where he won't get vilified every week, where he's a cert to play in the champions league every season, where he's.... blah blah blah... you get the picture... There's more to offer there than there is keeping him here and being happy to potentially come 5th because it's a "more competitive league". If an offer comes in, and the club thinks it's good enough - or it meets a clause - he'll be off.

We're nowhere near the likes of QPR, but, as pointed out by others, you can continue to be obtuse if you like.

It's Last Chance Saloon for Luis too. Another year on and Real/Barca won't even consider him regardless of how well he is playing. 28 in January and although that may be his prime there's not a lot of value for £80-100M.
