where exactly are you getting I don't like defensive players? one of my favorite EVER liverpool players is sami, do you want to know why? because in the ten years I watched him I hardly ever saw him dive into a tackle. he could read the game and snuffed out danger before it happened.
my point about fullbacks is if you have a team that has little to no width (as has been the case for liverpool for fucking YEARS) then it should be common fucking SENSE for the fullbacks to push on, its not fucking rocket science and to not do so is IDIOCY.
I don't rate skrtel because he has no positional sense, why on this fucking green earth would I not rate him if I thought he was good at his job?
as for mascherano I never said he is shit I've said I think he is overrated, we're talking about a holding midfielder that pretty much mispasses 3 times out of every 10 attempts. if he leaves and we take that money and spend it on someone who and shield the defense AND pick out a pass, we'll be better off.

Neil, to be honest I agree with alot of what you say, or at least I can usually see where you're coming from, but your point about Sami kind of compounds my point. You liked Sami because in many ways he was an 'elegant' player, he 'read the game' well (as you said). He endeared himself to you because of his footballing ability rather than because he was a good defender. Which is fine. I like classy players too and I like attacking football, but sometimes it seems to run rule over everything in your posts, sometimes you need out and out defensive players, despite how un-pretty it is.
