Hodgson reveals Gerrard talks
8th Jul 2010 - Latest News

Roy Hodgson has revealed his delight at the content of his talks with Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher - and the new boss is confident of a similar outcome when he meets with Fernando Torres after the World Cup.

Just hours after being confirmed as Liverpool manager last Thursday, Hodgson met with Gerrard and Carragher - and later Academy Ambassador Kenny Dalglish - in his new office at Melwood.

And the tactician was left thrilled with the positive nature of the conversations.

"I think they went splendidly," Hodgson told LFC Weekly. "I was very happy to meet the players and, of course, Kenny who I already know so well.

"I was delighted to see how positive they are. Everybody is looking forward to the new season."

He added: "Obviously Steven and Jamie are the playing heartbeat of the club and it's very important we keep people like that with us.

"I anticipate there might be a situation where other big clubs will try and sign Steven, but he gave no indication that he wanted to leave.

"Nobody at the club wants him to go so I will be doing my utmost to make sure he stays. I am confident he will."

One player Hodgson has yet to meet is Torres due to the striker's World Cup commitments.

However, the Spain star announced over the weekend he was pleased with the appointment of the 62-year-old and eager to hear the new gaffer's plans for 2010-11 - and Hodgson admits the feeling is mutual.

"Fernando is a wonderful striker and I understand the fans' concerns about his future," he said.

"Unfortunately with the World Cup still on, I won't be able to meet him face to face for another few weeks. That's just circumstance and you won't hear me complaining about it.

"When I do meet him, I will be doing everything I possibly can to convince him that Liverpool is the place to be.

"If he sees progress, I am confident that he won't want to go anywhere else. I think he understands the club and the city."

Meanwhile, the manager is planning a new role for Dalglish under his Anfield reign.

Hodgson believes the Kop legend has a significant role to play in strengthening communication between the Academy and Melwood as the Reds look to develop new talent.

He explained: "I never doubted that Kenny would leave. He's been offered a role, which I believe is a crucial role for the club - not just in the short term, but in the long term.

"The club will benefit from Kenny's work long after I've left Liverpool and long after he's left as well.

"He is very aware of all the players at the Academy and I understand there are a few promising players emerging.

"He will liaise between Melwood and Kirkby and keep me updated with any developments that he deems necessary.

"There is a bridge between the Academy and the first team that needs to be created and I believe he can help build that bridge."

Good news about the meeting with Gerrard: Hodgson must be confident to come out with stuff like that.

Re Torres, who knows?

Re Kenny, that doesn't sound like a particularly big role. I hope he's more involved, at a more senior level, than that description would imply.

So, Gerrard's staying, which means it more likely Fernando will give us another season.

The doom-mongers are fast running out of ammunition.

So do I but, if he is, that could spotlight some interesting human/working relationship sensitivities. Fingers crossed.

Hmm, we read that role differently then. I read it as Kenny ensuring the academy are producing players that can make the step up & then ensuring they get a chance, both of which were lacking under the last regime & houllier.

Kenny had a vey different setup that was closer to the first team when he ran it, I'd be amazed if we didn't see a return to that type of setup with him in this role.

As for the Torres comments, hardly setting himself up to get shut of him on behalf of broughton easily is he? He'd have to be a lot more non-committal were that his true intentions.

Promising. And at least it puts the pressure on the players to back it up now, particularly Gerrard and Torres.

As for Kenny, I think there's been talk of him being involved in identifying young players within the club and in the transfer market that could make a difference for now and the future.

At least it looks like we won't be raping Spain for 20 new youngsters each year.

To be fair we made money on a few of them, so it was sound in a business sense, just a shame they were all fucking garb.

Woy's making a huge thing of how well he knows Kenny isn't he? Every interview he seems to do includes reference to his mate Kenny, how he's known him for years, how important he is etc etc

Because they know how most fans wanted Kenny and not Woy

They also know how important it is to keep him at the club because of how influential he can be regards the fans and keeping them on side.

I'm beginning to think that we might keep Gerrard, Torres and Masher (Inter seem his only possible destination and I think they might baulk at the price).

If so, and Hodgson sells Insua and Babel and replaces them with (say) Figueroa and an Elia/Turan/Ruiz, we'd be well set for a positive season. Of course, if there's any truth in the Cole rumours then even more so.

Is it just me, or is that stuff from Roy (and Broughton to an extent) - however well meant - actually a bit cringemaking? The King might be feeling somewhat patronised through it all by now, and I doubt he's the kind of person to whom that will appeal.

I don't think we have any chance at all of keeping Mascher Buddha. He's played his last game in a LFC shirt.

I was actually thinking that, because Masher didn't get mentioned in dispatches, Hodgson has acceptted already that he willl be off in the summer.

I like Masher, but I'm not really that arsed given the fee we're talking about. If it means we could pick up two or three good players for the price then fuck it.

We've been here before with Masher last summer and he didn't go - his agent seems to be one of those constantly agitating for a move and fueling speculation. Given Toure went for 28m, we've got to be asking for at least 30m (you could argue more). I can't see Inter paying that much.

If Hodgson has convinced Gerrard and Torres to stay on and Broughton gives indication that offers are on the table for the club then Masher might just decide to give it a year and see, with a good feeling around the club.

Time for Hodgson to get the salt and pepper pots out.

I like that interview. Roy seems very optimistic and determined.

I like Roy's pragmatic approach. Get King Kenny to commit to a new enhanced role. Tying down the club stars becomes easier with the King still at the club, taking an active role and backing Roy.

How long has Mascher got left on his contract? We can't afford to keep him another season then sell him for peanuts.

2 I think

If true, then our decision's already made for us. Sell him now.

I've never believed that Gerrard woudl leave.
[/quote]

Especially to Madrid. He would not fit in to their football culture at all IMO.

I cant imagine Gerrard wanting to play in Spain for more than a season.
