He's got his Coates

When this happens, a part of me feels for the player involved.

Then I remember how much money they get paid and that feeling goes away.

He's never looked like anything other than a clogger when I've seen him play.

Accounting wise that will go down as a profit still. £7 million amortized over the length of his contract and reduced each of the 4 years since he got here, shouldn't be much of that left on the books now. Maybe a couple million or less now.

Not saying it's great or anything, but it will probably hit the books as a profit.

Accountants Eh?

Only they could make a return of £4m after spending £7m & countless more on wages look like a profit.

I must try that with the bank - take a loan out and over them just over half of it back telling them my account said it looks like profit for you.

I had to pass an Accounts paper to qualify as a company secretary back in the day, and I couldn't believe how much of it was thinly disguised guesswork.

That goal was fantastic - Good luck to him I guess. I never really saw that much of him but he was young and had lots of potential. 4Mill is about right.

Good luck to him. Great goal but didnt really do anything. Maybe didnt get a decent chance either.
Will deffo score against us next season.

That's just a quirk of the system of depreciation. It's of no relevance to anyone that the final entry is a profit.

I had forgotten that goal. What a belter.

I hope he does well. It may have not worked out for him. but he's been the complete professional since he's been here.
This.
I didn't here him moan once to the papers or nothing.
Mors berk comment is harsh.
But he's a fucking shit for brains so it's hardly surprising.

Ultimately you're right. But it will knock two million or so off the expenditures in the fiscal year he is sold, so it does make some difference in FFP terms.

But as I said before, it's not like I'm applauding the amazing business we've done here. It's probably a fair price for him now. Made a bet and ultimately it didn't work out.

"Hello. Sebastian? Hi. We've sold you to Sunderland."

Shields Gazette says its lower than that...
[article=http://www.shieldsgazette.com/sport/football/sunderland-afc/sunderland-to-sign-liverpool-s-sebastian-coates-for-bargain-2m-1-7331338]Sunderland will tie up the signing of Sebastian Coates this week – for a bargain £2million.

The Liverpool defender is set to complete a permanent move to Wearside after his loan spell last season.

Coates has been on Copa America duty and is taking some time off after Uruguay’s exit last week.

But Sunderland will push through the transfer to become Dick Advocaat’s first signing as head coach.

Reports from Merseyside say that the fee will be £4million, but it is understood that Sunderland will only pay half that amount.

Coates only has 12 months left on his Liverpool contract and the Reds are keen to cash in on him to help fund boss Brendan Rodgers’ summer rebuilding job.

But director of football Lee Congerton and the Black Cats board won’t be held to ransom and have negotiated the price down.

Coates struggled initially to make an impact on loan at Sunderland after being signed by fellow Uruguayan and then-boss Gus Poyet but hit form in the relegation run-in after being recalled to the team by Advocaat.

He impressed enough for Sunderland to sign him permanently, and a fee of £2million is seen as a great piece of business by the club.

His arrival will be the first part of Advocaat’s defensive rebuilding, with Sunderland targeting another centre-half should Santiago Vergini leave the club, while they are also in the market for a right-back.

Stewart Downing remains a target for the Black Cats, who are in the market for a winger, while they have also been linked with QPR’s Matt Phillips.[/article]
