So there have been one or two rumours linking us with Thierry Henry of late, given his failure to set the world on fire at Barca, and his unhappiness at living so far away from his little daughter. Cost would be an issue for a player in his twilight years, but mightn't he be exactly the sort of player we need?

Pros:

1. He's a winner, and has won the PL before- we don't have that sort of experience in our side

2. He has the game intelligence like Sheringham to elongate his career

3. He is STILL vastly superior to all but one of our strikeforce

4. Him and SG love each other

5. He could be very effective in a number of attacking positions and be brilliant cover for Torres if injured

6. He professes an admiration for Liverpool fc and the Kop

Cons:

1. He's getting on a bit- we won't recoup anything on him.

2. He might not like playing second fiddle to Torres and playing, let's say, on the right of an attacking three.

3. Does he have the hunger in the belly to win another league title?

4. He is prone to the odd huff- but then he IS French.

Personally, I think he'd be a terrific signing- he has a few years left in him, and I'd absolutely love it to happen. This isn't one for the future, but for an immediate assault on the PL. Thoughts anyone?

Re: Henry Rumours

I love him and would take him in a heart beat, provided he wasn't going to be our major signing as I don't think his fitness is tip top anymore.

We know what he's capable of in the league, not sure if himself and Torres would dovetail but i'd love to see him here.

Oh and he's been rumoured with City aswell.

I'd have to agree Doc - he'd suit our new system well, most probably on the left of a 3 even. The decisive factor for me though relates to this...

Con 1. He's getting on a bit- we won't recoup anything on him.

...it'd be a calculated risk in paying a large fee for him and he'd have to be an immediate success to justify spunking a large fee that could have gone towards a Benzema-type youngster (at twice the price).

Out of interest, how much would you say is fair value for Henry? 10m for me.

Re: Henry Rumours

There was a thread on this fairly recently, but I must admit I did not contribute.
Call it lack of guts if you like, but there were so many intelligent posters saying "non".
Personally I would love him, I think we and he are made for each other, on several levels, and I think he would really take to Liverpool life well, just as Anelka did.
He is a bit enigmatic at times, but I think it would be a real lifeline for him, one that he would grasp, and Torres would really benefit from him.
regards

I was thinking we'll have to pay 8-10M.

I'd pay his air fare to bring him over.

Deal.

Re: Henry Rumours

Not sure, he is more and more injury prone. If we were to play him on the left of the 3 he would sulk and moan as he is at braca playing the same position.

But it is henry...

He won't come anyway as rafa won't pay £8 mill for a 30/31 year old.

Re: Henry Rumours

Henry is the real deal. There's nothing to consider. If he is available........GET HIM.

I didn't see the thread Vlad, but certainly would have contributed a big fat Oui.

Like everyone, I think a young hot-poo player like Benzema would be terrific- but let's face it- it ain't gonna happen. Sometimes an older player, if he is of the highest quality, can have a very positive effect on a team- Gary Mac was one of those signings, but, no offence to GM, in Henry, we would be bringing in a player that many of us would have called the world's best player for much of his career. He is still a player of extraordinary quality and could be the fulcrum to us winning the PL, or at least, getting closer.

I wonder if his huffiness is linked to his unhappiness in his private life? The chance to come here might overshadow positional concerns.

indeed it could well be, but he also come out and said he is having to try to play a role that he has never played before.

I am torn really as I think he was a truely great player but if I am honest I think he is past it....but then again he may still have a bit of that fire in his belly.

Re: Henry Rumours

There's a lack of pictures in this thread. But anyway, I can't see why anyone wouldn't want him here.

Ship out Crouch and Kuyt, and bring him in.

Playing with torres would give him a new lease of life. At the moment he's way down the pecking order, coming here might give him an opportunity to prove he's still got it.

For me, he's one of the best footballers the Prem has ever seen and just isnt feeling the love in spain.

I'm still sceptical (mostly for reasons already addressed in your cons list) but if we did sign him, I admit I'd very excited. Isn't he Babel's all-time hero as well? An attacking three of Henry, Torres and Babel - fluidly interchanging rather than sticking to particular left-right-centre positions - would be wonderful to watch and almost impossible to defend against.

Add to that, Gerrard making his explosive runs from the middle, That would be awesome.

I'd take him for our RW/LW position Just off Torres.

Would he cost much?
Rafa can then concentrate on getting another two players, for full back and a quality winger for the long term.

If we could pay 10 million or below then why not, i know we will not be recouping any money for him but he could go on to be a coach or a member of the backroom staff? Surely Merchandise would also play a part in recouping some of the money spent on him, Henry is still a big name. He is also a match winner.

The fact is this, if we can't get Benzema / Villa / Eto'o , then Henry is perfect. In fact what is 8 - 10M if it brings us the PL ? And that is what could happen. We, everyone, has said next year is it for us, do or die perhaps ? Henry should work on so many levels and I absolutely do not see how a player as skilful and intelligent as Henry could not make a considerable improvement to our team.

1. A ready made replacement for Torres when missing from injury or rotation.
2. Even at 31 would add more pace to our attack
3. Would be a perfect mentor for Babel / Torres / New Winger
4. Would provide a lethal FK taker - something we are desperately missing
5. He is an exceptional and intelligent player who will make opportunities for Torres and others that maybe would otherwise not have been.

And if that becomes the catalyst for an EPL title or two over the next 3 seasons ? Then that 8 - 10M would have been a spit in the ocean.

You've called my bluff. Damn you!

Apparently Henry has just said that a return to the PL is not possible.

Course, we all know that means squat in this day and age. But I thought I'd throw that out there.

That sentence has just given me an even bigger hard-on for Henry to LFC than I had before.

I had forgotten about the Babel/Henry thing. And who better than to help Babel fulfil his promise as the 'new Henry' than the old Henry? There is a lovely symmetry to this.

babel - 10
torres - 9
gerrard - 8
henry - 7

okay that means getting rid of voronin and kewell but I could live with that

Id rather have Bentley at that price.
But i would still love henry of course.
[/quote]

I'm not sure we could get Bentley at that price though. And would Bentley inspire the rest of the team/fans as much as the signing of Henry? Right now we consistently look to two or three players to win matches for us- would you have the same confidence in Bentley winning games for us, than seeing T. Henry on the team-sheet?

At that price we could probably afford both.
