Sissoko was turned into defensive midfielder being a striker originally.
Alan Smith was turned into a midfielder as well.
John Barnes went from being a winger to a central midfielder.

Some times you've got it, some times you don't.

I don't think anyone would argue that John Barnes was about 10 times better as a winger, and only moved into midfield when he wasn't able to run.

Alan Smith was shite in both positions

And the idea of Sissoko as a striker is so frightening yet hilarious, I'm lost for words.

Henderson's major asset is is mobility and stamina. If you don't use those assets, or he loses them, he has no value.

I think that's fair enough. Although he did prove in the year we came second (when he was extremely influential) that he did have a deft creative touch too. Didn't he have 10+ assists that season?

Even Stewart Downing would get assists with Suarez on the pitch. Oh wait...

Is it worth pointing out that Henderson is second in the league in tackles made ?

This 'reinvention' sounds more like a strategy to manage his condition than anything else. It's highly likely the medical staff and specialists have told us he can't be charging around the pitch at full pace for 90 minutes any more.

None of our midfields have been convincing this season. Wijnaldum isn't getting forward, Henderson's greatest assets are being restricted and Lallana's very lightweight for the middle. It's not a set up I can flourishing. I'm hoping to see Milner moved back up or the presence of Can or Grujic in relatively quickly.

I'm not so sure about that. Wouldn't Klopp just drop him and sell him?

If he is genuinely incapacitated and he has to play a different, less mobile role in the team, he shouldn't be IN the team.

I'm not so sure. Klopp clearly has faith in players with the right attitudes, who are willing to listen, adapt and work hard, and therefore may feel he deserves an opportunity to prove himself in a new role. One which places less physical demands on his on-going ankle complaints. This is a player who has bounced back under two previous managers impressively.

I don't see him flourishing in this new role either. Henderson's a passionate grafter more so than a collected, composed thinker on the pitch, and that's why I can't see any other explanation of why Klopp would think this was a good idea. Regardless of the reason why Henderson finds himself deeper it's pretty clear that it's going to require a lot of training ground work to get it functioning how it should. He's only part of the problem. A midfield of Wijnaldum, Henderson and Lallana are, judging on previous years, all being played in new positions. Combine that with Milner at LB, Firmino at striker and Sturridge slightly wider or benched and, at best you can say it's confused.

He will never get back to being the player he was 2 years ago because he doesn't have Suarez and sterling to aim for and he is never going to be a game changer / make the difference in a game Like Gerrard used to.

Steady Eddy and good squad option.

As much as I like Hendo, it's not like with Gerrard where you can see the thought about utilising his passing range and general stature. Hendo's biggest asset is/was his enthusiasm, athleticism and stamina. He could also chip in with assists too but was great at doing that by snapping into challenges/interceptions and releasing the ball quickly long and short range. Now he's been (at least temporarily) slowed down by his injury, he's thinking about things too much and making mistakes, making the wrong decisions etc. It's not his natural game and also playing deep means he can't be as instinctive as he was, he has to hold his position, read the game and be alot more tactical and disciplined.

It's only fair to him if we are to see if he can get back to his best, to play him in his natural role and not hamper him two fold by also playing him in a restrictive role.

Ray Kennedy was turned in to a midfielder after playing upfront for Arsenal.

I don't think anyone is labouring under the delusion that no player ever has successfully changed position and/or role in a football team.

Because that would be fucking retarded.

The discussion is quite specifically about Jordan Henderson's ability and suitability to do so.

You mean other than Can & Lucas have been unfit/injured for virtually all games so far and Dahoud refused to move this Summer ?

I think Klopp is just making do for now, though I don't really understand his reluctance to play Stewart since he bothered to keep him in the squad (other than it's a way to start both Hendo & Wijnaldum).

Well, yeah. I mean, Lucas has successfully become a fifth choice centerback very late in his career.

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

He's not the type of player to produce anything spectacular so it'll be another ok season for him.

Poor from us we've not upgraded on our midfield in 10 years.

10 yrs of Lucas. ..another Lucas thread then?😉

2nd most tackles made and wank at the same time. Probably just wank at winning them tackles.

Some times you've got it, some times you don't.

You forgot Neil Ruddock who started as a winger.

For Arn:
(Since Lucas hasn't played any matches this season, I could only use last seasons stats.)

Hendo wins 38% of his tackles, Lucas won 48%.

Hendo commits more fouls than Lucas

Hendo doesn't do heading, it seems.

3 matches for Henderson is not a statistically viable number. Pointless stats (and I do love my stats).

Not really good enough is he? Nice lad and all that but if he played for someone else the way he plays for us, would you want to sign him? Fuck that.

If he played for someone else the way he played for us before his injury, then we probably would, yeah. The season we finished second he was a massive loss after his sending off and in the games he was suspended. He was good enough then. Time will tell over his injury, but this "he's always been shite" stuff is nonsense.

1 out of 5 seasons. Talk about setting the bar.

1 out of 5 seasons is nonsense. He was injured for practically all of last season. He had a rough start under Kenny when he was a kid new to a big club, a good second season, a great third season, a good fourth season. Do you really want to continue rewriting history with this biased crap?

He's played 3 games this season, I guess in your book, going off your shite stat comparison with Lucas, that that equates to a full season of being "wank".

Setting the bar, fuck off with that snide shite.

Henderson is a good player and we've gotten pretty decent value for the money we paid.

The only issue with him - recent injury problems aside - is the one shared by the squad as a whole. We lack players that are rock solid week in, week out as well as players that are cool under pressure and measured in how they play.

Henderson would be a great supplementary player to a good spine. Unfortunately we don't have one.

It gets forgotten about as well that the season after we finished 2nd, Hendo had a very productive season again. He looked to be getting in his stride as a consistent, top-level performer. It's clear his injuries have took their toll, but let's see if he can get back to top form. Judging by the last 2 or 3 games, he can get there. His best is definitely good enough for us, though.

He was brilliant yesterday and he had that Captain swaggle from the get go. Liking what I'm seeing, long may it continue.
