I like that he is trying. He clearly is not content with being just a playmaker, he is an ambitious lad, our Philippe, and wants to be like Kaka or Ronaldinho, a player who decides the outcome of games by himself, not just aids his teammates. With his excellent all-around technique, he
should be able to become a much better shooter and scorer, if he puts his mind to it. And when he does make that improvement, our team will benefit immensely by having another big game, decisive player alongside Suarez.
Our gripes with refereeing should not obscure the fact that Chelsea and City exposed our big attacking weakness – we have no true goalscorers outside of Suarez and Sturridge. When a world class team and manager deploy a defensive shield, you need a special kind of armour to pierce it and even one world-class weapon is not enough. If everything goes according to plan, we hold on to Suarez, and Coutinho and Henderson dramatically improve their goal-scoring efficiency, we might just have a team ready to win Champions League AND the EPL title in a couple of years - yes, for real.
At this point Coutinho is still struggling to hit the target in a game situation, even though I'm sure in training he scores loads. The only way to find a shooting touch is to keep trying it in games. So far, I don't think we have lost points because of Coutinho' target practice during a game; he usually does it when we are leading by a couple of goals. I'm sure the breakthrough will come at some point, maybe even later this season or the next.
