He really doesnt get it

He must realise the only reason he can now elect when to rest is because he's not considered an expensive first choice striker. Giggs, for example, used to suffer from being rushed back too quickly when he was younger. Owen's deluded if he thinks he's now being treated differently out of some kind of wise and benign health care system at the club.

No ex-player has ever behaved as badly.

Really?
Distinguished Liverpool ex-player. Know of one?

Didn't Keegan have a few pops when he left? From what people have told me that is - I'm too young to remember (Heh - it's been a while since I could say that)

Im not too young to remember Keegan leaving. It was known for a long time that he was leaving at the end of the season. I dont remember him saying anything bad about us after he left but I think the way to judge him is in the manner he was always received when he came back to Anfield.

I actually met him outside Anfield in 1973 I think it was. Lovely guy he was. Stopped for a chat with me and my mate without being asked. He was driving a VW Beetle. How times have changed

Keegan was in love with Shankly, not the club, but he's always remained really respectful of the club and the fans. He got a pretty uncomfortable reception when he came back with Hamburg, but he took it on the chin and other than that it's been fine.

Michael Owen: Manchester United are biggest club in the world
Oct 7 2009 by Dominic King, Liverpool Echo
MICHAEL OWEN has guaranteed himself a hot reception when he returns to Anfield later this month after claiming Manchester United are “the biggest club in the worldâ€.

The former Liverpool striker was never going to be welcomed back with open arms on October 25 after joining the Reds’ fiercest rivals on a free transfer during the summer.

However, this latest statement means that Owen’s stock has slipped even further now with supporters who once idolised him.

After spells with Real Madrid and Newcastle United, Owen surprised the football world when he ended up at Old Trafford in June.

Owen said: “It’s fantastic working with Sir Alex Ferguson.

“It’s everything you would expect from a top, top team. They are the biggest club in the world, and everything from the kit man to the canteen girls and through to the manager is first class.â€

Either he is one thick cunt or he is actually going to take some perverse pleasure from his reception in a couple of weeks time.
Who is the biggest club in the World?

Well, according to little Michael it was us, then it was Real Madrid until he went to the mancs. He keeps changing his mid.

Is it me or is Owen seriously indicating that he's been hitting on the 'first class' girls in their canteen?

WILL THIS EVER STOP!?!?£$/#"¤

He's backtracking a bit now, but he is still coming across as a little prick:

Manchester United striker Michael Owen has tried to lessen the hostility surrounding his return to Anfield later this month by playing down his comments about being at the biggest club in the world.

Earlier this week the former Liverpool player praised the input of manager Sir Alex Ferguson, adding life at Old Trafford was "everything you would expect of a top team, probably the biggest club in the world".

The manner of Owen's departure from Anfield to Real Madrid in 2004 is still a contentious one for fans, who have never forgiven the former youth team star for threatening to run down the final year of his contract and leave for nothing.

Owen has since been back to Anfield with Newcastle after a one-year stay in Spain but the reaction to his visit with Liverpool's arch-rivals on October 25 is likely to be the most vitriolic yet - especially after his recent comments.

"I didn't set out to offend anyone," explained the 29-year-old.

"What I said was, in terms of support, revenue and stadium, Man United are probably the biggest in the world but Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool are up there with them in other areas.

"In saying that, I'm sure things I've said at different times over the last 20 years will be dredged up and turned into back-page stories over the next two weeks.

"I've been back before with Newcastle a couple of times, so I've played there for an opposing team, but I'm certainly looking forward to this game.

"It will be different, it'll be a bit noisier."

Owen has yet to be on the winning side against his former club but knows, playing for United, that could change this season.

"As usual between United and Liverpool, it'll be a competitive game between two of the world's top teams," he added.

"The teams are more equally matched perhaps than when I went back with Newcastle, so it should be a good game and an exciting day."

With Liverpool already having lost three Barclays Premier League matches this season, Owen is well aware the damage a United victory at Anfield could do to Rafael Benitez's side.

But, with United having lost at Burnley - a match Owen played in - early in the season, the England striker is wary of slipping up.

"It's still early in the season but you don't want to lose too many games or drop too many points at this stage," he said.

"All the teams seem quite tightly packed together (at the top), so it's still all to play for."

Owen is still hoping his form for United, providing he stays fit, will get him back into the national team.

His last England appearance came as a substitute in a friendly against France in March 2008 but injuries and a drop in form resulted in him being left out of Fabio Capello's squads since.

But, with 40 goals in his international career, Owen believes he can still do a job.

"I've always been optimistic. I will always score goals and I have got the record to show that," he said.

"I have proven that at World Cups before but the last thing I want to do is start a campaign and say all the reasons why I could be or should be involved."

Asked if he had spoken to Capello, Owen told Sky Sports News: "I don't need to. I know the situation.

"I need to play well and score goals for Manchester United. If I do that, then I could get picked.

"But I don't lie awake at night thinking about it. There is plenty more to life if I'm not picked in the England squad."

Commercially, the Mancs probably take it, thanks not least to a decade of underachievement by us on that front under Moores and Parry.  Historically and in terms of trophy wins, they most certainly do not.  FFS, people, don't let's start thinking football began in 199f'cking2 like that lot down the E.Lancs.Rd.  We are STILL level with them in titles won and two ahead of them (which I don't believe they'll ever overhaul) where Bigears is concerned.  In European terms Real, Milan and possibly others too are also ahead of the buggers.  Get a grip.

And Asim and Larry, you're being waaaaaaaay too kind to Owen over this.  Even if - IF - what he said is his honest belief, and even if he thinks he owes this club nothing any more, he should still have kept his fool mouth shut just for the sake of not stirring up public feeling shortly before the two clubs meet.  Lots of people slag Ince off, deservedly in some ways, but he didn't come it with any of this cr@p when he came to us after leaving the Mancs.

I was at that Match and all the Kop did was sing Keegan Keegan Show us your Arse!

He was applauded on and applauded off, after we gave his new team a jolly good thrashing! 6-0 McDermott hat trick !

Yes, I was at that match too. I didn't mean he was booed, but there was quite a bit of mockery (not all of it lighthearted) from some quarters which I remember feeling ambivalent about.

Larry's fine Macca, don't bundle him in with that fool.

And to be honest, I agree. Regardless of how nauseating Owen's becoming, he's right - they are the biggest club in the World.

How do you define biggest? Could I care less how many fans a club has worldwide? Could I care less how big a club’s stadium is? All that matters to me are trophies and style of football. Boasting about anything else is juvenile.

The biggest club argument was/is a crutch used by many United fans who could not reconcile their perception of their grand institution with the fact that they were off the pace in both domestic and European competition.

Their claim to historic significance in English and European football is unquestioned but I have always found that the discussion of what club is “biggest†is something that comes up in conversation with their fans more than any other. They hold onto that label for dear life.

I am very interested to see if they still rely on it now that they have a trophy haul that can be argued to be the best in England at least. I feel like it may continue as long as we still have the upper hand in Europe. It’s a little pathetic really.

kiss the badge you little fuck. go on you want to, dont you?

ah well, let not get angry, relax guy! In a year or two Owen will retire due to injury, and balance will be restored to the force.

The only annoying thing for you UK people is little shit will start media career and you will have to listen to the boring monotone cnut drone on and on about his beloved man utd.

Not me though. I get to listen to Robbie Slaters genius insights every week instead. and some crazy irish mr magoo! What joys!

Laz is just burdened with an excess of playtime. As for your definitive announcement of the 'World's Biggest Club,' you might as well sit down with Roger Daltrey at his trout farm and deliberate on the ordering of 'The Biggest Band in the World' list. It's never so simplistic, just a bore to pursue as a discussion. I mean, does any fan older than ten care?

in what possible way is manu bigger/better than real?
real make more money
real have more fans
real stadium is bigger
real have won more domestic titles
real have won more european titles
real have more pulling power
real have better players
seriously what has manu got over real? better pies?

It just isn't that worthwhile as an exercise. I mean, trophies are easy, that's why fans are always talking about number 19. Rich lists, again - relatively straightforward (but not without their own points of contention). But some kind of all-encompassing, multi-dimensional, category - I really am surprised some seem to think that's so easy to collate and calibrate. And how does it change? A big transfer, an Asian marketing deal and a cup win - beep-beep-beep...'The positions have changed, Captain, the machine cannae take it!'
