He really doesnt get it

I think the real issue here is the fact that an ex-Liverpool player who came up through our system and is perfectly aware of the *ahem* rivalry between us and Man U said something like this without any attempt at diplomacy.

Silly boy.

No he isn't and no you couldn't.

He's a well known player at a top club. He will be interviewed on a semi-regular to regular basis.

He just should have engaged the block-head brain before answering.

Michael Owen has attempted to play down a potential row between Manchester United and Liverpool ahead of this month's Premier League clash.

The former Liverpool and now United striker suggested earlier in the week that the Old Trafford club were the biggest in the world.

However, Owen has moved to clarify his comments after insisting he meant no offence to a club where he scored more than a century of goals during eight years.

"I didn't set out to offend anyone," he explained ahead of the October 25th encounter at Anfield.

"What I said was, in terms of support, revenue and stadium, Man United are probably the biggest in the world but Madrid, Barcelona and Liverpool are up there with them in other areas.

"In saying that, I'm sure things I've said at different times over the last 20 years will be dredged up and turned into back-page stories over the next two weeks.

"I've been back before with Newcastle a couple of times, so I've played there for an opposing team, but I'm certainly looking forward to this game.

"It will be different, it'll be a bit noisier."

Ooooh, get her!

I had no problem with Owen when he left and I was even more charitable towards him than many when he signed for United but he's making himself very difficult to defend.

Signing for United is one thing, crowing about how great they are when the situation is already difficult enough is quite another

The more I think about this, the less plausible it seems to me that Owen didn't know what he was doing. If I'm right about that, the question is what he was hoping to achieve. To ingratiate himself with their fans? To thumb his nose at LFC? Both?

It really shows you how out of touch these London hacks are about the club. They were on Sky this morning, sounding bemused as they discussed a report that Owen will get a bad reception at Anfield. Paul Hayward (fresh from defending Ginsoak) sneered and said, 'If the fans thought carefully, they'd realise that Benitez didn't want him, so why resent Owen?' and Patrick Barclay just lumped the issue in with all fans taking pleasure from any other opponent doing badly. It's trivial but it does show their mixture of smugness and cluelessness. Not the slightest awareness of what really angers fans about Owen. Pathetic.

The story so far: Larry and rage graduate with honours from the 'Take pleasure in anything negative that happens about your own club' course at Chiswick Community College and set off to the forums to educate the masses.

Larry's fine Macca, don't bundle him in with that fool.

And to be honest, I agree. Regardless of how nauseating Owen's becoming, he's right - they are the biggest club in the World.

Laz is just burdened with an excess of playtime. As for your definitive announcement of the 'World's Biggest Club,' you might as well sit down with Roger Daltrey at his trout farm and deliberate on the ordering of 'The Biggest Band in the World' list. It's never so simplistic, just a bore to pursue as a discussion. I mean, does any fan older than ten care?
[/quote]

Oh I agree, it's a bullshit statment. I can see why MO said it though.

I supported Everton as a kid. I never supported Real Madrid, but I played for them. It's a job opportunity, just like anyone else's work.

The longer you're at a team, if the fans make you feel welcome and the players take to you, then you build an affinity. So now obviously I look for Real Madrid results and Newcastle results, but it doesn't make me any less loyal to Manchester United."

Well, THAT removes any further doubt for me. The little gobsh!te is on a public sulk because we didn't fall over ourselves to bring him back to LFC when he wanted to come.

What a snivelling little turd the guy is. I wouldn't pee on him if he caught fire.

It's not even as if either the Real or Newcastle fans DID take to him. The Real fans were indifferent, and the barcodes, as far as I could see, disliked him.

As bad as a roasting he will get from the Liverpool fans can you imagine the uproar there would be among Man U fans (fans of his current club) if he said thah he still had a "thing" for Liverpool and always looked out for their results.

He is a United player now and I don't want any kind words from him or any of his team mates. A la Fergie, they only say nice things about other teams/players when they are not viewed as a threat.

You're quite right, Count, but in the past he would have anticipated something like that by not mentioning any old team by name and settling for a safe generalisation. To have the sheer nerve to claim he had an affinity for Newcastle, when he so plainly didn't, is just taking the pee.

I can see where you are coming from Macca.

He is the complete mercenary who is turning into a media whore, saying and doing anything, and he surely knows that these remarks are contoversial, to keep him in the public eye and thereby in his (or his agents) mind increasing his chances of being picked by Capello.

He is a Man U player now and I treat him accordingly not in the least bit arsed what he has to say for himself.

CUNT

dont always agree with you, but in this case I agree 200%

I purposely chose to steer clear of this conversation and any conversation about Michael Owen because he's pretty much the reason why 10 years ago almost to the day I became a Liverpool fan. But I just can't take this shit anymore..

Fuck Michael Owen.

That is all.
