Swapped playing footy for cricket a few years ago. Much more civilised for a 40 yr old 🙂

I weigh less than anybody else on the pitch, so even at my age it's easy to accelerate away from them. Physics, F = ma, standard.

Playing a game against an army side a few years ago, this psycho - a beefy, red-faced Gazza-lookalike - tried to nutmeg me repeatedly. I never, ever, got nutmegged, so I'd collect the ball, he'd go flying past and I'd play the ball forward. The fifth time he tried it, I collected the ball, some idiot moved offside so I had to check, thus giving this mad twat behind me the time he needed to dive in two-footed, rupturing both Achilles. He merely got sent off, I couldn't even walk for a while after that. I still love playing, but I've had to adapt my game to Poulsen-style immobility! I'd still murder that army nutter if I ever see him again.

Wow. I'd have thought there might almost have been a case for assault there.

Incidentally I always had you pegged as a keeper. Can't imagine why. 😉

38-years-old and still playing now and then - actually even found some great form at the start of 15' where I almost also felt pacy again. Then stopped again and after the first training this Winter I felt like my body was about to fall apart.

It's kinda the same each year but after 3-4 training sessions it seems the body can still get back to something resembling the form of my younger years. Or maybe I have just completely forgotten how much better my shape was back then.

And where the heck have you been?
I came back a while ago, there were balloons, a fanfare and glitter and everything, you missed it?

And now I have just so little time to post with two little girls at home keeping me utmost busy, Winter flu's everywhere and lots of work to boot.

But I am right here, mate.

How are you?

Have had winter flu myself but getting over it now, thanks. I did notice when you came back but hadn't heard much from you since, which is why I asked. Not a dad myself but I can imagine two daughters would keep you pretty busy. 🙂

The issue I have with playing 5 a side or indeed any form of football is the people who think they can blatantly elbow or set out to injure you, just for their pleasure. It's the reason I gave up Sunday league, well part of it. I wasn't fit enough, I wasn't bothered enough and I was fed up of the angry idiots who just wanted a ruck.

My work has a works 5 a side tournament every year and it always boils over. I used to be straight in to the centre of that rubbish but now I just give people a withering stare. Then ensure I win the next 50/50 with them, firmly but fairly.

I watched a Sunday league game the other week whilst taking my kids to the park. First thing was the language was constant. Yeah it was never great when I played but it was every sentence. The second was that the ref just didn't have a chance. Abused from start to finish, I wouldn't do the job for love nor money.

I think it's worse over there, but that's why I don't play in the open leagues anymore. These guys seem to be generally dissatisfied with their lives so they look to break your leg.

I blame violent video games.

It just seems to allow wannabe Chopper Harris' the forum to exist.

Im 42 still playing.
Im getting close to giving up now to be honest.
My back and knees hurt all the time and when I play on a sunday its wednesday before I feel proper right again. Providing im not injured. Which I usually am.
I really dont want to stop because its my favourite hour of the week but im starting to get concerned that I will really pay for it in 10 or 15 years. I worry that it will actually end up with me not being able to walk without pain.
So im really struggling with it at the minute. Its pertinent this week because ive hurt my back badly and been laid up in bed for a week.

Ceramic implants are pretty durable now, so in 10 or 15 years you should be able to replace most of the necessary parts and they'll last the rest of your life. If not, in 25 years who knows you could probably install an electrical insulator into your brain to eliminate the pain. I wouldn't worry about it. Footballers are wealthy and if they start funding this type of research it could happen even sooner.

Don't listen to Dantes. He's just can't wait for the singularity - to be made "one with the Internet".
Your knees and back will be fucked long before then.
