I feel like my post in the post match analysis thread was swolled up and missed, so I wanted to post it here (as I did similar for Charlie Adam last year)

Themn...i'm so sorry

Glen Johnson is a don and he's won me round

Not just from the last game (although that was the tipping point)

He's been consistently solid for a year now, and that display at the weekend was imply imperious.

I still like kelly and I have high hopes, however, perhaps its time in the europa league to test his mettle in the middle, because hopefully glen johnson has RB or LB in hsi pocket for the next few years.

I can still understand the haterz, but he's so much better than when he arrived. Is he the 17m RB yet? No, but he's certainly getting there.

Agreed. He was great for England in the Summer too. He's still capable of 'sleepy' moments and his positioning can occasionally be all over the place, but his improvement is more than obvious, particularly defensively and he seems to have got a bit more of the attacking threat back. I'd imagine playing left back has helped this, one thing that I think is a major contributory factor though is that Kenny visibly worked on him tucking in more last season for the right sided centre back, so whenever the CB was caught out of position, Johnson would move inside and hold the position, he's also started tucking inside more as a third centre back when we're under the cosh, which is the one thing we've lacked in recent years. Arbeloa, Riise and Finnan all used to do it, since their departures we've suffered in that respect and it's been a big reason we haven't looked as solid.

Good posts. It was a masterstroke by Kenny to play Magic at LB for the reason mark describes, namely that it helped his positioning big time (the same move worked the same way with Carra back in the Treble season incidentally). It also got Magic used to playing there, with the result that he's now someone who can play not just adequately but extremely well in either fullback position.

I'm not 100% satisfied with him, but he's certainly getting there. He looks good going forward, and he can whip in a decent cross. He's also well capable of cutting inside if the support isn't there. But his defending can still be improved upon. I'm not saying he's a liability or anything, but he sometimes makes errors, and once or twice in the past they proved costly.

That's true as far as it goes, but it's probably true of every player we've got. Magic's a real asset IMO and should be boss in Rodgers' system.

I've always said he's one of our best 'players', I just didn't (and still don't sometimes) feel that he was consistent enough as a defender, he was prone to too many errors and far to casual at times. He's at peak age now so hopefully we're seeing maturity and experience count for something, though I guess Ross will be in to tell us we should have sold him in the Summer as we'll never get our money back on him now, blah blah.

Good post Fabio, Glen Jo is one of the best RBs in the world and defo in the Prem. Been for a while now IMO and keeps improving.

That's a great post, mark.

Johnson has never been anywhere near as bad as the haters on here have tried to make out; there always seems to be one player that people want as their "go to" when they need someone to blame. Johnson has been tremendous for over a year and very good for the majority of his time here.

Everyone makes mistakes; Sami made some mistakes which cost us goals and he's Kop legend. Johnson can be the same. The move to LB has been sensational as it's improved his concentration markedly but I still don't believe he's as positionally unsound as people think. He has to respond to the game situation and what's going on around him - sometimes that demands he move out of position.

Agreed. Too many fellow Reds have been too easily drawn into the received "wisdom" in the media about Magic and his defending. It needed work, but it's never been as consistently bad as has been made out.

Yeah, I do think as part of his game is to be an attacking fullback, overlapping, he will inevitably get caught out once in a while, that wasn't necessarily my problem with him in the past, it was more, as you said, his lack of concentration. I've still seen a few glimpses of it this season but by and large he's come on leaps and bounds. As I said, he's always been a top player, he just needed to work on the defensive side of his game more, in terms of playing as part of a unit and reading the game better. That seems to have improved immensely of late. People laughed about him getting put at centre back (and even left back), but if this is the result of a bit of experimentation then it's been worth it.

I'm not sure I completely agree with that, I do think he consistently made errors, but anyway. I think alot of the criticism is because we were used to out and out defenders, he came in to help the transistion into us becoming a more expansive side, and inevitably you make sacrifices because of that.

He made errors, agreed. The "consistently" bit we'll have to agree to differ on. Fortunately we can definitely agree about what we've got now, namely a top-class fullback on either wing who will be a big part of our future success.

I'm always amazed that we don't win the league given how good our players are
The problem has never been the level of our best players but more so the level of our not so good ones.

If you get my drift.

Our "best" players aren't very good. Take for example the 3rd best defence in the league that we have and can't possibly afford to sell anyone from. 5 goals conceeded in 2 games.

Yeah, I'm amazed too that having about 6 top players hasn't seen us walk away with the league.

People say we have a world class striker, a world class AM, the best DM in the league and the 3rd best defence in the league. As well as the best GK.

I'd expect more than 8th from that.

Maybe managers do play a part after all...

Wouldn't argue. That thought does occur fairly regularly reading a fan forum. Our players aren't as good as everyone thinks they are but then, everyone's a fan (I think), so they're biased.
Anyway, we're on a high after drawing with City. Once Sunderland have beaten us, everyone will be calling them shit again.

Keniget and I are the only ones who've consistently rated Glenjo. Even during that ridiculous period last year when nearly all of you were stating as fact that Kelly was a far better right back.

I've always, always rated Johnson, as have other people than you two.

You missed out the "I apologise, profusely, you were right" part, but I'm just splitting hairs !

In the first half on Saturday when Reina got the ball, both full backs were stood on the halfway line as their starting position, looking to get forward. I've never seen us hold such a high line. It worked great, second half they didn't do it.
