Good player and I'm excited he's here.

I'll judge this transfer when I find out how much cash is left over for other targets.
Yep.. what he said.

If Rafa brings in a Robben/Silva and/or Tevez type players as well as Johnson, we'll be laughing. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
If you sign Johnson for £17 million and Tevez for something similar i can assure you that you wont be the only one laughing! £17 million is a ridiculous fee for Johnson but he is a good playe and should so well for yous.
Like we all laughed at United when they spent £18m on Carrick? Yeah, I really wish we were buying a Belgian CB that no one's ever heard of instead. A snip at £10m...
If he turns out half as good as our £6 million right back (who people had never heard of) then i'll be happy enough
The one who is going to Madrid?
Thats irrelevant to the point i was making 😉

Anyway, he wont go
It must be a nice relief for you to come on here and discuss exciting transfer news....rather than sticking to the Arsenal sites and having to discuss your captain (and best player) shamelessly pimping himself to Barce....As you were.
haha what a silly post. Id hardly label a £17 million signing of Glen Johnson as "exciting"

Speaking of captains and best players "shamelessly pimping" themselves...hows Gerrard?
Please dont go down this road mate. You're a friend of the site and with Rouge and C and B you are one of only 3 rivals still here. Dont get drawn into silly arguments because you'll say something you dont mean and get banned and i dont want that.
Stick to your usual style of honesty and decent simple rhetoric, or this will get messy.
What happened to Las Vegas Red?

[nothing trivial I hope]

Look, we've been moaning endlessly about how Rafa quantity over quality throughout his tenure. This transfer window represents a shift for Benitez; he finally feels he has the makings of a title winning squad and he's "fine tuning". Now we're finally adding the quality, and paying top fees for top players is something top clubs do; especially in today's market. Do we really want to run the risk of another Dossena? Thought not.

RB was a position we could have improved, or was one - at the very least - that needed cover.

We've done that. The fee? Well yes, it's extortionate but we don't know the full repercussions just yet, and I think it's highly unlikely that Benitez would sacrifice a good attacking player for Johnson - there will be significant amount of money remaining.

And lets not forget, 95% of people on this board rate Glen Johnson. Maybe not to the tune of 18M, granted, but it's a significant consensus and we have every right to expect big things.

In simple terms, he will seriously boost the attacking threat of our right-flank, and his defending will only improve under the guidance of Rafa, Cara & co.

I'm not on the edge of my seat, nowhere close. But we're landing a top player and I'm happy about it. Join me?
Nice post Squiggs. Agree fully.

We baulked at an extra few million for Alves yet spending 18million on a RB now.
Would you rather Dan Alves or Johnson if given the choice?

I'm happy with the signing just a bit worried with the fee. Hope it won't affect other targets or lead to a sale of Masher to generate funds.
CHRIST!!! The negativity seeps through my monitor when i click on SCM.com

We're signing an England international Right Back for EIGHTEEN MILLION QUID and everyone is like 'whooooooooo *intake of breath* S'abit steep'
BE HAPPY YOU BUNCH OF CUNTS.

There is something Houllier-esque about this summer and the possible make or break nature of it. To see well over £15m lashed out on a fullback not worth £5m a short while ago has me worried.
Last summer was Rafa's worst by some distance and I can't imagine we'll get it that badly wrong again.

I think Johnson at that sort of price is a massive risk, but if he proves he can make the step up to the top 4 and produce the same level we've seen at times last season, it might work out.

I think Rafa has targeted him with RW as well as RB in mind.

After Kuyt's season? Unlikely surely?

Nah, Kuyt cutting in & attacking against weaker oppo & Johnson pushing up the wing. Both defending & overlapping when necessary against normal opposition.
I meant as an option at RW rather than first choice.

Kuyt had a very good season but still had a poor spell in the middle of the season and looked absolutely fucked towards the end. Johnson would give Rafa a pacey attacking option who can still offer strength and defensive stability. Maybe both would play on occasion with Kuyt up top and Johnson at RW.

Yeah that would make sense alright. He should be able to cover the whole touchline no problem, plenty of pace to burn. I have a good feeling about Kuyt and Johnson on the right hand side.

I wouldn't say it's really a risk. You know what you're getting, more or less. Certainly in the PL, Johnson is a known quantity. The price is high - probably too high - but at least, unlike Keane and Barry (when we were in for him at £18m), Johnson is young so will have a decent resale value. He's also the first England first-teamer we've signed since... well, who? Collymore? Barnes/Beardsley?

He also scored 4 goals in our last 5 games

so johnson in

Arbeloa + Dossena out (total 10 mil)

I would happily have Richards for the touted 5 million, decent cover for RB and CB.
And a good attacking player (I want Tevez)
And keep the like of Mascher and Alonso.

I would be over the moon with that as our summer

Ok. He wasn't tired.

RVN would be an ace buy, ex-manc or not.
Rumours he was available for as little as 1.5million. He will always score goal when fit.

Why have the Beeb and Sky not reported anything regarding Johnson?
If its accepted/done bar a medical you would think it would be reported? its not on 211 or 251 at all.

Yup, would not say no to him ... He's the best 'cheap' quality striking option out there -

Happy to sit on the bench, but can perform when needed, score goals, get assists & play up top on his own. No-brainer IMO.

He's 33 now and injuries would be worry but would be a decent back-up option. For £1.5m he would be proven quality.
Agree in terms of his quality. It's the "happy to sit on the bench" bit I wouldn't be sure about.
Yah, because let's face it - he's only what 31/32? He's good enough to start for quite a few top teams (He'd be fantastic for the Gooners I think - or a team like Inter) ... But I seem to remember he wasn't too happy the way things ended with Manure and there's no better way to get back at Slur Alex than winning the league next year with us ...

Wizzy, you've convinced me. We have to sign him and Tevez just to watch Ferguson explode with a big, fat, boozy "splat".
