Glen Johnson - done deal according to papers

We baulked at an extra few million for Alves yet spending 18million on a RB now.
Would you rather Dan Alves or Johnson if given the choice?

I'm happy with the signing just a bit worried with the fee. Hope it won't affect other targets or lead to a sale of Masher to generate funds.

There is something Houllier-esque about this summer and the possible make or break nature of it. To see well over £15m lashed out on a fullback not worth £5m a short while ago has me worried.

Reasonably impressed with Johnson's delivery from the wing against Andorra. Question is will he be consistent and be able to deliver against the better teams?
Hull, Stoke, Boro, West ham, Everton and Fulham all took points off us. If he does the job he did vs Andorra (4 assists) versus the piss like that we'll be flying.
I think those teams you mentioned are better than Andorra anytime mate. But anyhow, what I saw of Johnson during the Andora game was good.
Me too, but i am also POSITIVE that our team is better than England by miles, so by the same token as the Oppo being better, so will be his team mates.

I have NO reservations about this at all. Top signing for me and a statement of intent that im very happy with.
As i said, lets get Silva or Tevez now and get ready for a real go at it next year.
ok, let's see who else Rafa gets.

Good player and I'm excited he's here.

I'll judge this transfer when I find out how much cash is left over for other targets.
Yep.. what he said.

If Rafa brings in a Robben/Silva and/or Tevez type players as well as Johnson, we'll be laughing. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
If you sign Johnson for £17 million and Tevez for something similar i can assure you that you wont be the only one laughing! £17 million is a ridiculous fee for Johnson but he is a good playe and should so well for yous.
Like we all laughed at United when they spent £18m on Carrick? Yeah, I really wish we were buying a Belgian CB that no one's ever heard of instead. A snip at £10m...
If he turns out half as good as our £6 million right back (who people had never heard of) then i'll be happy enough
The one who is going to Madrid?
Thats irrelevant to the point i was making 😉

Anyway, he wont go
It must be a nice relief for you to come on here and discuss exciting transfer news....rather than sticking to the Arsenal sites and having to discuss your captain (and best player) shamelessly pimping himself to Barce....As you were.
haha what a silly post. Id hardly label a £17 million signing of Glen Johnson as "exciting"

Speaking of captains and best players "shamelessly pimping" themselves...hows Gerrard?

Its exciting when we are finally challenging for titles rather than scrapping for fourth like we used to. We only need a couple of players to have the complete squad, and Johnson looks to be one of those in Rafa's plans, so yes its exciting.

Fucking 'ell any 17 Million signing by Arsenal would get you excited you liar ;D

Bloody hell, this was 11 pages last time I looked.

So, fill me in - we have signed him, and we've paid a ridiculous sum of money (admittedly on a pretty good player) to fill a position that isn't in desperate need of sorting.

Is there anything I'm missing (other than the point?)

I would say it is an area that need addressing.. some one who can cross a decent ball into the box..

In hindsight Rafa would of probably opted for Barry on the left and this deal probably would not have gone through.... Johnson and Aurelio at rb/lb.. I guess gives a better balance overall.. We might actually break some of these stoke type teams down now with someone like Johnson in the side...

Bog off. That was the Chavs tapping him up, pure and simple.

No, the Gerrard comment is fair enough I think, he was clearly tempted, he's said as much.

However, he's made the correct decision and will remain a Liverpool player for the remainder of his career, which is more that can be said for young Cesc 😉

You'll be up shit creek if he leaves in the next year, you're still a class midfielder short, you'll be 2 class midfielders short if he hops off..

There had better be another player of similar value arriving this summer, or I will end up disappointed. But judging the transfer on it's own merits, I am reasonably satisfied.

*shrugshouldersmiley*

If buying Glen Johnson means we don't get a proper fucking winger, it's a shit bit of business.

Otherwise, fair doos.

Has it been confirmed?
Please dont go down this road mate. You're a friend of the site and with Rouge and C and B you are one of only 3 rivals still here. Dont get drawn into silly arguments because you'll say something you dont mean and get banned and i dont want that.
Stick to your usual style of honesty and decent simple rhetoric, or this will get messy.

You're missing the point, which is that the Chavs came to him - not the other way round - to tempt him in the first place.

Look, we've been moaning endlessly about how Rafa quantity over quality throughout his tenure. This transfer window represents a shift for Benitez; he finally feels he has the makings of a title winning squad and he's "fine tuning". Now we're finally adding the quality, and paying top fees for top players is something top clubs do; especially in today's market. Do we really want to run the risk of another Dossena? Thought not.

RB was a position we could have improved, or was one - at the very least - that needed cover.

We've done that. The fee? Well yes, it's extortionate but we don't know the full repercussions just yet, and I think it's highly unlikely that Benitez would sacrifice a good attacking player for Johnson - there will be significant amount of money remaining.

And lets not forget, 95% of people on this board rate Glen Johnson. Maybe not to the tune of 18M, granted, but it's a significant consensus and we have every right to expect big things.

In simple terms, he will seriously boost  the attacking threat of our right-flank, and his defending will only improve under the guidance of Rafa, Cara & co.

I'm not on the edge of my seat, nowhere close. But we're landing a top player and I'm happy about it. Join me?

Yeh I'm happy about it. After all, he can't be any worse than Keane, who cost more. Pricey yes but a good buy IMO.

Rafa will most likely play him left wing.

I am happy he's coming though. He looked a class player throughout last season

we just need some help elsewhere - this isn't a priority for us, which I think is why many of us are saying "18M? Wow....

Sunny nailed it in one sentence really "Pricey but a good buy."

I do have major reservations over the size of the fee, but if you're going to take a gamble at spending big money on a player not proven at the highest level he ticks a lot of the right boxes.

great post

This could be the start of something unique. Our right hand side will have the best defensive winger in the league
combining with the best attacking right back.
