There may be a giant whoosh coming my way, but the windows not even open yet is it?
Yes.

I like the idea of Johnson coming, but am still completely taken aback by the fact that we're spending 17M on a RB. Mental.
I like Johnson and think he's a decent player, but not in a million years do we need to be investing seventeen million pounds on the left back position, it's forward postions where that money needs to go first and foremost.

BUT, he might be being funded by a couple of players outgoing like Dossena and Babel etc - in which case it's cost us effectivly nothing so it's not bad at all 🙂

with the signing of johnson I think we will have THE best back line in the league.

liverpool
-------------------pepe------------------
johnson-----carra---agger-----insua(sp)

manu
------------------VDS-------------------
rafael----rio-------vidic----------evra

chelsea
-----------------cech--------------------
boswinga---terry-----alex------cole

agree?
Uniteds is better. You forgot Brown who was englands rb untill he got injured. Hes fit now and a nice player.
I was wondering about manu's back line. their center backs are (argubly) better but we have a better right back (with johnson) and a better keep with pepe. hmm, a tie maybe.
We havnt signed him yet mate.
Uniteds centre backs are better. They also have Evans, o'shea, Neville, the twins etc who just seem to always do a job when theyre called upon.
I think we have a good defence and thats important but what we have thats key is options if this signing comes off.
Lb-insua, dossena, aurelio, carra.
Rb-johnson, darby, arbeloa, carra, degen.
Cb-carra, skrtel, agger.
We look a cb light, but i must say thats a lot of depth. What we need is those players to be reliable when called upon.
come the new season who ever loses out at center back (agger or skrtel) will think we have too many center backs.
I worry for 3 reasons.
1.Aggers injury worries.
2.Skrtel being not very good.
3.Carra looked extremely jaded by the end of the season.

I think a Richards or Distin is a perfect cheapy backup signing.
I see where you're coming from but I'd rather the rest of our budget (every penny of it including sales) going on an attacking midfielder/forward.
do you really hate chatting with me oncy? 🙁
If Kelly is good enough to play carling cup games and 5 to 10 premier games a year then fine, i'll go with that.
And no i dont hate it. Its taken me 5 years to get you to rise, allow me this moment and dont ruin it.
bren has been able to do it for years.

i reckon arbeloa and doseena will be sold very soon.

clearly rafa sees something in degen and to be fair last season was a complete wash out for him.

left back - aurelio and insua
centre back - carra, skertel, agger & youth promotion?
right back - johnson and degen

time to spend the money on an attacking left forward supported by funding by the sale of at least 2 of voronin, babel and lucas.

if someone wants to bring up league games where johnson has been humiliated then fine but lets not bring up internationals, seriously, who gives a fuck?

degen? I wouldn't rely on him for anything other than giving the physios practice.

Everyone keeps saying we need to sign more attackers attackers attackers.

Werent we the top scorers in the league last season?

What we need is other options, to break down the shite at home. Johnson will give us another option. He gets past the right winger and to the byline, and im sure he will create many chances for the forward lads to get on the end of.

Im fucking made up with this. Its what we needed, its the going rate, and we are finally competing in the transfer market.

One more quality attack minded player (winger/striker) and its been a good transfer window.

Stop your moaning (mors).

I don't think we knew what we had when rashid was here.

He's obviously light years ahead of his time, take this thread for example.

£17m? For a right back that's not called Dani Alves?

*cries*

I'm not sure our RB position warranted spunking that amount of money. Even if Arbeloa wants to move, I'm positive that Johnson is not twice the player he is.

Very underwhelmed by this to be honest. Especially if we do not improve our left side and strikers. Still its early days.

Its only cost us nothing depending upon where else Benitez wants to spend and what other money he has available.

If this is halved by selling Arbeloa then fine, that's a new right back for half the price because we would be selling someone we wouldn't normally be selling.

If we fund the rest by selling Dossena or Babel, or even by the money Pompey owe us for Crouch then that is cash which we would probably have been getting anyway which then couldn't be used elsewhere, because the signing of Johnson is unrelated to it.

As I say though, we have no idea what else in the way of funds Benitez has and who else he is planning to buy, so if we can afford it without having to sacrifice elsewhere then its a good signing.

Yes we were Piedro. But we were quite dependent on Gerrard and Torres for the goals.
Kuyt and Benni contributed more during the 2nd half of the season and it would help to have another attack-minded player besides K & B to help lessen the burden on SG and Torres.

Stop gloating. Firstly cos it's not done yet, secondly cos we're Liverpool and we're ten times the club either of those outfits will ever be.

Good player and I'm excited he's here.

I'll judge this transfer when I find out how much cash is left over for other targets.

Are (Were) Manchester United dependent on Ronaldo for goals?

Are Chelsea dependent on Anelka & Lampard for goals?

Every big club is dependent on certain players for goals. Its why you have those players. Thats what they are there for. To score goals.

Im not saying I dont want us to sign another attacking goalscorer, I do. But im very happy with this signing, as it gives us a much better chance of breaking teams down at home.

Good, now get this out the way.

May be we should sell Arbeloa and get Richards if he is available on the cheap as he can cover both RB and CB?

I think another match winner could really tip us over the line that seperates us and united. One more mercurial talent in the old advanced positions cannot hurt.

Stop being so logical Pete!

Like we all laughed at United when they spent £18m on Carrick? Yeah, I really wish we were buying a Belgian CB that no one's ever heard of instead. A snip at £10m...

I'm very excited about this signing. He'll really add something to our attacking play.
We shoul however be ashamed of ourselves for not buying him in january, when he hadnt signed a contract and the asking price was 8,5..

Real have sent out a shortlist of players availeble. I'd sign Sneijder or Robben and we're laughing.
