when finnan first arrived he was poor, poor to the point rafa wanted rid and only an injury to finann in the transfer window stopped a potential sale. josemi came in and was utter utter shite, finann came in and gave consistant performance after consistant performance until he exceeded his fulham level and was the best right back in the league again, but no one is going to tell me finann was class from day one. he patently wasn't.

Rafa wanted to get rid of him for no good reason at all. He was one of our most consistent players. Rafa reevaluating him wasn't due to his form improving, it was due to the fact that he's much much better than Rafa thought, and certainly much much better than Josemi.

What is strange is how Finnan went with a whimper while JAR is remembered so fondly. I guess part of it is the age.

Finnan had a brilliant cross, and was a good one on one defender.

Indeed. I'd be well pleased.

We've been linked with Micah Richards for £5million too, I'd be happy for us to sign both. Although Richards has looked a bit all over the place for a while now, you can't go too far wrong with £5mill, and I'm sure there's enough about him to develop into a decent player in a better side.

I'm was a big finnan fan, I don't think he was in the class of babbel but he was extremely consistant and got on with his job, rarely went forwards but when he did he was very effective with accurate crosses with either foot (a very rare talent) but when rafa first arrived he was FAR from consistant, as I said only an injury in the transfer window stopped a potential sale to spurs (thank FUCK). there is a lot of revisionism but usually when rafa wants rid there is a good reason for it, case in point xabi alonso. it was a kick up the arse from the josemi signing that made finann buck up his ideas.

Finnan didn't have the greatest of first seasons with us but was still fine. I think he had a few injuries to be fair.

Benitez wanted to get rid of him to raise money I think and he probably thought that Josemi would be better than he was. So it is fair to say that to a degree Josemi being awful did save Finnan's Liverpool career. However, it is not strictly true that Finnan suddenly became good. He was good anyway. It just took Benitez some time to notice.

when he was bought for liverpool and played under gh he was a 7.5 out of 10
when rafa first arrived he dropped to a 7 out of 10

Both Josemi and Finnan were there at the start of the season and started the first few games under Benitez

oh gracious ME! when on this earth did rafa want gerrard sold? also alonso had a dip in form for a couple of season, if some fans want to sweep that under the carpet then more power to them. I would have had no problem whatsoever if alonso was sold last season because it looked like the alonso I knew and loved was gone for ever but he kicked on put in a player of the season peformance. would rafa try and offload alonso if he performed last season like he's performed this season?

lastly if you hate arguing with me then don't. All I do is call things as I see them no revisionism involved. simple fact is rafa want rid, wanted rid of someone who according to you was the best right back in the league (at the time rafa wanted to offload him). well that makes rafa fucking clueless doesn't it?
 
A few seasons back, Rafa identified Dani Alves as the young attacking right back for us. He was decent, if somewhat unproven, at the time. we bid up to 12m before pulling the plug on the deal as Sevilla demanded 14m+. Two years later Barca paid almost 30m for him once he'd established himself as the best right back (arguably) in La Liga.

Parry et al were castigated for not backing Rafa in paying up for Alves.

Fast forward to now and we have a young established premiership right back, 1st choice for England, with 100 odd games under his belt and fast-becoming one of the best attacking full-backs in the premiership. In addition, the market is inflated to the extent that average Championship players are changing hands for 5-7m.

16-19m is simply the going rate for such a bright young star. He'll improve us in his position, complement the narrow Kuyt well, and with luck should establish himself for us at right back for the next 6-8 years at least.

What's the problem?

Riera had a good season Glock, and with a pre season under his belt he'll be even better. I dont see left wing as a critical position to adress. If we sell Babel, then we really need a new winger though.

The fee is 17, reported in the Echo. They owe us 7, so from this years budget, thats 10 mill. That leaves us with plenty of funds, 10 mill + and what we sell.

Or does people really think Rafa has the 7 mill from Crouch in this years budget? They're most likely divided up in yearly installments. We wont physically 'pay' them 17 mill from this years budget.
 
I wish people would stop moaning, we have had a bid accepted so it looks like this signing is happening start looking at the positives!
