Liverpool poised to sign Johnson
By Phil McNulty

Glen Johnson
Johnson is set to quit Pompey for Anfield

Liverpool look to have won the race to sign England defender Glen Johnson after agreeing a fee in the region of £17m with Portsmouth.

Reds' boss Rafael Benitez is confident he has beaten off interest from Chelsea in the 24-year-old and expects to make him his first summer signing.

Manchester City had also registered an interest in Johnson, but it is believed Anfield is his preferred destination.

Benitez is now likely to sell Andrea Dossena to help fund the deal.

Johnson, who joined Portsmouth from Chelsea in a £4m deal two years ago, emerged as Benitez's prime target after having an outstanding season at Fratton Park last season.

Benitez is working within financial restrictions in the transfer market this summer, but it is understood Liverpool are still owed money from the deal that took Peter Crouch to Portsmouth last summer.

Spanish defender Alvaro Arbeloa could also be sacrificed to raise cash towards the Johnson deal, with Real Madrid being linked with an £8m move.

He has cemented a place as England's first-choice right-back under coach Fabio Capello and played in the two recent World Cup qualifying victories against Kazakhstan and Andorra.

Johnson signed a new four-year deal at Portsmouth in January, but club officials accepted they could not stand in his way if he was offered the opportunity to move a club playing in the Champions League.

Prime target, well if he's going to be the best of the bunch, roll on January window

I'm still hopeful of tevez and will remain so until I see him in blue.

alonso is case in fucking point. somebody tell me what reason (fucking WHY) would rafa try and sell alonso other than a dip in peformances? oh, that's right because he (alonso) attended the birth of his first child rather than show up for a match. fuck this I'm done.

*okay I'm calmed down now...
He wanted rid of Alonso because he wanted the money to buy Barry, who he thought would be an improvement because, yes, Alonso hadn't had a particularly great season.

The situation with Finnan was completely different. He wanted rid of him before a ball was even kicked, and had already brought in a replacement (Josemi). The idea that Finnan started badly under Benitez and somehow raised his game after Josemi came in later is something you have made up in your own mind. Josemi started the season as first choice with Finnan (I think) on the wing.

Benitez only realised that Finnan was better than he thought later on, I believe when Josemi got injured.

Ooh, I'm excited.

Although £17millie is a bit more than I would have wanted us to pay for him. And selling Arbeloa would just be silly as it would leave us thin at RB again.

Good stuff. If he performs as well as he has this season we're getting a good player. It will be nice to see some better delivery fired over from the right flank.

Not 100% confirmed yet but i'd be chuffed with Johnson. A decent attacking right back is what we need. Arby is good but you can see his weaknesses. Does everyone agree that Johnson is a definate improvement on Arby?

It's never confirmed until they're standing next to Rafa holding the shirt.

Johnson is a giant leap in the right direction. I'm going to be extremely pleased if this deal goes through and I'm not even to bothered about the apparent fee.

Top-drawer English players will never come cheap.

I don't think we'll sell Arbeloa mind.

Reasonably impressed with Johnson's delivery from the wing against Andorra. Question is will he be consistent and be able to deliver against the better teams?

I like the idea of Johnson coming, but am still completely taken aback by the fact that we're spending 17M on a RB. Mental.

Rafa's probably still fuming on losing out on Alves for £12million because the board wouldn't stretch that extra £3million. I don't think he would have been willing to accept being outbid on another RB he wants.

Once Chelsea and Man City were in the equation it was always gonna inflate the price significantly. I'd say at £17million, we're overpaying by about £5million. £12million would have been a good bit of business especially in the current market.
Its a wodge sure, but its probably 2.5m a year for 4 years, so it shouldnt drag down our targets for forward berths.
Johnson and Silva would represent a perfect summer for me.
Oh and maybe a Richards/Distin and Pandev/Tuncay for cover.

Well, we could always sell him off to someone like spurs for at least 10 million if shit happens.
Effectively we will only be paying 7 million odd.

with the signing of johnson I think we will have THE best back line in the league.

I was wondering about manu's back line. their center backs are (argubly) better but we have a better right back (with johnson) and a better keep with pepe. hmm, a tie maybe.

Dunno that chelsea defense looks good, its got more experience.
Its pretty close though skrtl and ivanovic as 3rd choice centre backs if we keep arbeloa i think we are stronger ;D

Uniteds centre backs are better. They also have Evans, o'shea, Neville, the twins etc who just seem to always do a job when theyre called upon.
I think we have a good defence and thats important but what we have thats key is options if this signing comes off.
Lb-insua, dossena, aurelio, carra.
Rb-johnson, darby, arbeloa, carra, degen.
Cb-carra, skrtel, agger.
We look a cb light, but i must say thats a lot of depth. What we need is those players to be reliable when called upon.

come the new season who ever loses out at center back (agger or skrtel) will think we have too many center backs.
I worry for 3 reasons.
1.Aggers injury worries.
2.Skrtel being not very good.
3.Carra looked extremely jaded by the end of the season.

I think a Richards or Distin is a perfect cheapy backup signing.

I see where you're coming from but I'd rather the rest of our budget (every penny of it including sales) going on an attacking midfielder/forward.
Me too, but i am also POSITIVE that our team is better than England by miles, so by the same token as the Oppo being better, so will be his team mates.

I have NO reservations about this at all. Top signing for me and a statement of intent that im very happy with.
As i said, lets get Silva or Tevez now and get ready for a real go at it next year.
