I am actually surprised that Utd haven't been in the running for him. Or is the fact they're not something to worry about?

O' Shea has regained some steady form and Brown is due back from injury. Rafael could develop into a good player with more playing time too. Maybe he didn't think it was a priority area to splash 18million on.

Can't see them going for Johnson. They already have 6 left/right backs in Evra, Brown, O'Shea, Rat Face and the 2 Brazilians.

They need to strengthen much more in other areas of the pitch.

Given they will not have any decent wingers left in the squad when Ronaldo leaves.. I thought Johnson would be well suited for them... especially now Rooney will be their key player & Giggs is getting on a bit. Rafael really is the only one who has potential for RB for them... Brown an Oshea are more of a utility Arbeloa mold RB I thought

He is a great RB but not really good enough for a top class winger. Why would they sign someone and then try and convert him to a winger?

so guardian reckon its 18.5 million. be interesting to find out how the deal is structured

Liverpool expect to sign Glen Johnson within the next week after Portsmouth accepted their £18.5m bid for the England right-back and Chelsea withdrew from the race for their former employee. The deal will represent a significant breakthrough in the transfer market for Rafael Benítez, who learned today that Real Madrid's interest in Xabi Alonso has avowedly faded.

Johnson, along with David Silva and Gareth Barry, was a leading target for Benítez this summer and is clear to complete his move to Anfield after Liverpool matched Chelsea's offer for the 24-year-old last night. Though unable to compete financially with Chelsea and Manchester City, who also bid for Johnson, Liverpool are still owed £7m by Portsmouth from the deal that took Peter Crouch to Fratton Park last year. That will be written off as part of the Johnson fee, with Andrea Dossena and possibly Alvaro Arbeloa being sold by Liverpool to swell Benítez's budget beyond a net £20m.

Johnson considered a straight choice between Liverpool and Chelsea after opting against a move to City due to their lack of Champions League football. The England international had indicated to Anfield officials that he favoured a move to Merseyside and that decision became automatic when Chelsea decided against re-signing the player they sold for £4m in 2007. It is believed problems selling Jose Bosingwa may have forced Chelsea's sudden retreat, with the Stamford Bridge club unwilling to add another expensive right-back to their squad without offloading the £16.2m Portugal international.

Johnson's anticipated arrival at Anfield will be a major relief to Benítez following Barry's move to City and the possible repercussions for Alonso, a long-time target for the new Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez, and a player who remains disillusioned with his relationship with the Liverpool manager.

The Anfield club have repeatedly insisted that Alonso is not for sale and, in the absence of any public declaration to the contrary from the player, Real's sporting director, Jorge Valdano, has claimed defeat in attempts to lure the Spain international to the Bernabéu. His interview with Marca, however, may also be an attempt to force Liverpool to lower their asking price for Alonso and part of a protracted strategy to sign the 27-year-old.

"Liverpool have issued an official statement to the public – Xabi is a player who has little chance of joining Real Madrid," said Valdano. "We tried hard to sign him a few years ago. We had a meeting with Real Sociedad but, when I left [Madrid], they lost interest in him."

Madrid are definitely still in for Alonso - they're just being dicks as usual.

Although 18.5m is ridiculously steep for Johnson, we've said all along that we just need to concentrate on strengthening in a couple of key areas, right back being one.

If Johnson is Rafa's no.1 target then its a good sign that he's done the necessary to get him. We're at the stage now where we arent going to settle for second or third options. Remember how we wouldnt cough up an extra couple of mil for Dani Alves because we didnt want to overpay for players, well we've passed that now. We are at the level where if we want a player, then we have to pay whatever it takes as we are competing with our rivals to sign them.

Good player and I'm excited he's here.

I'll judge this transfer when I find out how much cash is left over for other targets.
Yep.. what he said.

If Rafa brings in a Robben/Silva and/or Tevez type players as well as Johnson, we'll be laughing. Guess we'll have to wait and see.
If you sign Johnson for £17 million and Tevez for something similar i can assure you that you wont be the only one laughing! £17 million is a ridiculous fee for Johnson but he is a good playe and should so well for yous.
The grapes must be sour round your way.

We've paid a premium for an International talent. Don't pretend like you lot are fucking immune to it.

14M for Arashavin? *NEWSFLASH*... The gyppo was skipping around in Russia for 10 fucking years before Euro 2008, when any offer circa the value of a big fucking mac would have taken the Rusky cunt out of there.

Brade Hangeland? Does Wenger think a quick flutter of his thunderbird eyebrows will be enough to tempt Fulham? 15M to get him, when as you well know - you could have had him for peanuts 12 months ago. You "laughing at that one" chuckles?

Carrick, sold from West Ham to Spurs for 2.5M, sold to United 12 months later for 18M.
Dwight Yorke, fucking around at Villa for 6 years, Ferguson splashes 12.6M on him when required.
Berbatov, how much did Spurs give Leverkusen for him then?

It's what top clubs do. They pay a high price for quality. Maybe if Arsene wasn't trawling through the alleyways of downtown Lagos in search of Kanu's 7 year old cousin, Arsenal could be up there spending with the big boys. It might take you up from 4th place for the first time in 5 years.

Nice stadium by the way. You must be delighted with that.

Hahahahahahaha

From The Times today.

Vincent Enyeama's representative has claimed that the Hapoel Tel-Aviv and Nigeria goalkeeper was close to joining Arsenal. “Hapoel demanded €2million [£1.7million] and Arsenal pulled out,†Tony Martich said.

Fucking ha ha.

Anybody knows if Pennant can be thrown in as part of some kind of deal? Or is his contract up?

He's available on a free transfer this summer.

He's a really solid keeper - very good shot stopper, so prone to a lack of concentration once every few games. He should be in a far better league imo.

£25m odd 😉

The going rate seems to be going lower by the day. From 18.5 mil to 17 mil quid.
apparently we bought torres for 27mill... and it was no way near that...

it seems the media inflate prices.. I find they often include players wages in the figure as so was the case with Mascherano...

Its being reported today that the fee is 17 mill. 10 mill paid over 2 years, 7 mill written off from the Crouch money.
He'll be on massive wages, 80k or something. And will be the 3rd most expencive full back in the world. Thats pressure Glen, now step up.

Glen Johnson's Liverpool switch delayed

Glen Johnson's anticipated £18m switch to Liverpool has been put on hold with the main negotiating figures on their holidays.
The Anfield outfit remain quietly confident of winning the race for the England right-back ahead of Manchester City and Chelsea.

But everything is on pause with both Rafa Benitez and Johnson on their summer break.

In addition, Peter Storrie has been in Israel since Monday, discussing tabled bids with Sacha Gaydamak.
