The build-up for this goal is exactly how I imagined Gakpo would fit in our attack - he receives the ball on the left, doesn’t do anything spectacular with it, doesn’t try to beat the defender or force a shot - just protects it, lays it off in a timely manner and makes a clever run into the box to get on the end of Mo’s pass and finishes confidently. It’s simple, but how do you stop it?
This type of goal is more “clockwork” than “superman”; Man City used to score a lot of these types of goals where their attackers never try to outmuscle or outrun a defender, just connect a run with a pass in one specific time and location that’s known to them, but not the opposition. Where Gakpo’s size helps is in that he can shield and protect the ball and ride out physical challenges easier than someone who is smaller/weaker, thus making his part of the “clockwork” mechanism more secure.
