First Sterling .. now Hendo

I'd be surprised if Henderson didn't sign.

If he doesn't it's completely down to the higher ups

IMO he's loving wearing the armband. That'll be a powerful incentive to him to stay, though it won't outweigh the finances if we're stingy with those.

in hindsight very strange we did not wrap up these signings during the final run of last season when we were on a high, nearly winning the title and still a sense that Suarez would remain with us.

You don't think the players knew he was going?
They were probably not certain 100% - he had signed a massive contract and we had rebuffed Arsenal after many thought he was going. The main point is that - we were on a high and should have capitalised on it.

9 months on:

Hendo is now captain wannabe and (rightly) demanding big wages.

Sterling has gone from strength to strength to be arguably the best young player in Europe and (rightly) wanting big wages.

Just imagine the absolute bitching this site will be going on if they were on higher salary contracts with the start we had to this season...

At least this way, we know the quality we have.

Do players get paychecks in the off season? In the NFL for example I believe players actually get paid by the game and only receive paychecks in season.

If Henderson was on £65k when he was crap and developing, now that he's one of the senior players in the squad an offer of a 15k raise is an insult.

No wonder he's said he'll think about it at the end of the season. If he thought about it now he'd get angry and it would fuck with his form.

I don't mind the actual negotiations - the club is entitled to be cautious - but it's the pace that alarms me. It's positively Parry-esque. Go back and forth as much as you like, but do it promptly and with proper urgency. We drag out every damn stage of the talks, which just makes us look amateurish. If Ayre approached player issues with the focus and clinical professionalism that he shows in commercial deals, he'd be a good executive.

Add to that Stevie going public and saying if the club had offered him a contract in the summer he'd have signed it immediately and moved on. I'm not getting into it's good or bad that Stevie is leaving, but it does show how relaxed the club are when it comes to contracts. Whatever way you look at it, it's incredibly bad business letting valuable assets dwindle away.

It's just as bad rushing into a deal with a player who turns out to be a flash in the pan.

I know he will sign but I just hate it that such news come out when we are doing good in the league and on a great run of form, kind of stupid distraction from the good stuff !
