Brendan Rodgers faces a major struggle to keep Jordan Henderson at Anfield.

The 24-year-old captain-elect wants to stay with Liverpool but Sunday Mirror Sport understands there is no sign of agreement on a new contract.

And with his current deal having little over a year to run, that has put a host of top clubs on alert.

Talks about a long-term agreement took place in November but turned sour when an £80k-a-week deal was rejected.

There has not been further talks planned and the player and club are at three-month impasse.

Liverpool operate a relatively strict salary system and the offer to Henderson was understood to be a rise of £15,000 a week.

But after Rodgers made it clear Henderson would be the leader of his new-look Liverpool, that offer was seen as below market value by the player’s camp.

A decade ago, Steven Gerrard was being paid £100,000 a week.

Henderson’s advisers could also point out that key midfielders in other elite teams earn way in excess of - often more than double - £80,000 a week.

There is absolutely no suggestion Henderson is looking for a lucrative move. Quite the opposite.

We understand he is keen to commit to the club but this will be the most important contract of his career and as his current deal heads towards its final year, there is bound to be interest from big-name rivals.

Manchester City and Arsenal will both want to be kept informed of developments.

It gives Liverpool another contract headache.

They are keen to tie down Raheem Sterling but the striker’s agents want a deal that reflects his status as one of Europe’s best young players.

With the new £5billion TV deal kicking in the season after next, players and their advisers are likely to hold out for even bigger salaries but Liverpool cannot afford to pay the sort of money dished out by the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea.

But they are going to have to up the ante sharply and quickly if they want to avoid a serious fight for Henderson’s services.

It needs sorting.

The basic wage should be easy enough to sort out and I'd have an incentivised contract would work out well for Henderson given his dedication and already rapid improvement. I hope more talks are scheduled for soon so everyone can concentrate on footballing matters.

When Hendo is rejecting £80k per week you know things are silly. Not that he's not worth it, didn't think he'd reject that sum of money.

We have below average players on big wages at the club.

So of course players who know the team is being built around them will want big wages too.

How much did the premier league get for the tv deals? Is it any wonder the players are looking more money?

80k is a pretty silly offer. Isn't he on something like 60k already?

He can expect to hit 100k plus.

The TV deal went up something like 30% didn't it?

Using that basis any player who hasn't shown improvement at all could expect a 30% increase.

A player who has improved or whose value to the team ha sincreased would expect am increase on top.

Penny wise pound foolish is how best to describe us.

We've paid the corpse of Steven Gerrard twice as much recently. Henderson has a right to be pissed off.

Piss take..

Owners need to change their philosophy

Just how much will it cost to replace the likes of hendo and Sterling?

Far more than what they are asking for..

Pay them what the deserve in today's market.

Piss take, it really is. .

On the new players and pay rises for other players?

I am sure the maths don't add up when you thrown in the likes of carroll and kuyt going out too. We replaced them with high earners, but also the likes or luis alberto, alberto moreno etc - who aren't on the same wages?

I wonder if the impasses in new contracts for Sterling and Hendo has anything to do with the rumours of Ayre's imminent departure.
This shit would be his responsibility wouldn't it, even if it isn't him doing the negotiations.

I don't mind the actual negotiations - the club is entitled to be cautious - but it's the pace that alarms me. It's positively Parry-esque. Go back and forth as much as you like, but do it promptly and with proper urgency. We drag out every damn stage of the talks, which just makes us look amateurish. If Ayre approached player issues with the focus and clinical professionalism that he shows in commercial deals, he'd be a good executive.

I've no problem with us offering Hendo and Sterling these sorts of basic wages. Give them the rest in performance add ons. If Sterling knocks in a hattrick and sets up another 2 in a game, then give him 250k that week, no problem. Same goes for Hendo. But them both expecting 100's of thousands a week as a basic pay is nonsense. I suspect these 'stories' are probably leaks from their wanker agents trying to get an emotional push from the public for more cash as a basic.
What if we've offered Hendo 80k a week, but bonuses to hit 200k a week? Why on earth should he reject it.

Maybe the club should reverse leak the deals they are really being offered, play the agents at their own game.

FSG need a reality check. We aren't going to be able to keep our top players on the cheap. Pay them what they're worth or they'll leave its as simple as that.

Especially since TV monies continue to rise. Both Sterling and Hendo need sorting asap.

Unless their plan is to sell them for maximum value and buy new young players (or count on current young players to step up)

For the record I have been backing Jordan to become good since he signed. He had some very nice assists early on and even if he struggled a bit he was still young.

To risk loosing him on a free based on refusing an extra 20 K a week is strange. We bought him for a quite high price and replacing hum would cost the same in addition to 100 K a week.

Unless the plan of course is to bring in Clint Dempsey as his replacement (as the plan was in 2013)... Then I guess we can save some quids... 😛

I imagine both of these contracts will be signed in the close season. It's irritating it's taking so long, maybe we are waiting to see if we have champions league football before deciding how much we can invest, maybe they're waiting until they know if we are in it before deciding whether to stay.
