Exactly, it's very unlikely that I'd ever cut my holiday short for my work, or should I, but when you're at the top of your profession like Andy is, it's the kind of sacrifice you should expect to make to prove you're the best, especially after how he performed last season and the amount he's paid.

Sounds like double standards to me mate.

It's not, I could work extra hours, sacrifice my holiday to really push my career if I wanted to, and I have on occasions, but I don't want or need to for the most part. Andy is already at the very top and if he wanted to prove himself and show his commitment to continuing restoring his reputation from last season, that's what he would do. I'm not saying he should be looked down upon for not doing it, but considering the noises there has been about how determined he is to fight his way into the squad, the fact he's already been on holiday for three weeks, and the obscene amount of money he gets paid, I would have thought he would have wanted too.

Carroll is allowed a holiday, and anyone who says "I'd come off my holiday for work" is either thick or lying.

He's allowed 3 weeks of doing fuck all, especially when you consider the training footballers have to do weekly.

Plus the relentless media and supporter attention you'd get constantly. Anyone would need a mental break from it

I have to take a blackberry on holiday and do the occasional email. Does that count Mystic?

I take my phone but always remove my email account and only switch it on when I want to use it. Everyone needs a break.

I don't claim that what they do isn't physically and mentally demanding, but the training they do during the week for a couple of hours a day isn't exactly digging ditches.

If I told my employee that I thought his work over the past year was shit and that I'm likely to look for a replacement, my mind would be completely made up if he proceeded to use up his entire holiday on the beaches.
If he were to cut short his holidays and worked his arse off, I'd be willing to give him another go.
But that's just me.

i don't blame Carroll for having a holiday or any other footballer as they are entitled to it. but when you go that extra mile it does make you look better. fans can already see how committed borini is to trying to succeed so he will get more support from fans compared to players like downing or Carroll who haven't. its like at work, you have a role you are expected to do, but if you go beyond that it makes you stand out favourably to management. its the only reason i supported Henderson last season when i heard how he was always the first one there and the last to leave. which said that he was trying to improve.

If a new boss said he was getting rid of me without bothering to see me work, he'd be bloody lucky if I came back at all.

If your output was way shitter than what was expected of you by looking at your position and wages, it only takes a glance at the annual records for the boss to make a judgement.
Then you take your full holiday.
The boss says bye bye.

If you were poor throughout the year, then surely (if the job is performance based) you'd get the sack regardless

This discussion wouldn't even be happening if borini didn't come early

The situations are different

A slightly longer glance would show a marked improvement in work-rate and performance in the last six months, that would go some way to justify your position and wages.

But if it was that straight-forward, I'd be asking why the boss hadn't said bye bye to quite a few others (Aquilani, Downing, Henderson) and had actively encouraged some (Cole), not one of whom came back early to impress the new boss.

Commitment and loyalty between players and club/manager is a two way street even if the fans can't see that.

I'm sure someone in the Carroll threads would be more arsed than me to debate how well he's played, but I thought this was about one player having to show more commitment than anyone else at the club, just to get the same chance to prove himself that everyone else has.
