Lightening did strike twice with both our left backs.

Depends. Would robbo sit happily as backup like kostas seems to be?

We need someone who's going to sit behind trent for a few years, with minimal expectations...but good enough to start for most teams.

Hard to do

Yea I suppose there’s 2 ways of looking at it. Don’t forget Robbo was here 5 months or so before he broke into the team. But he wouldn’t have been happy staying there.

My point was probably slightly away from yours in that we seem to have nailed down 2 left backs who are perfect for us. One is a super competitive lad and the other seems more chilled but absolutely does a job when needed.

Similar points, but different vibes.

Kostas is similar to origi i suppose. Both happy enough to just wait until they're needed, without a massive drop off in team performance.

The easier course is to try and sign a younger version of Milner. Basically a versatile midfielder who can also fill at RB if necessary. Having two specialist backup full-backs is a real luxury, and not something that many teams have. And not something many will sign up for given that Trent will always be first choice.

I've suggested Gabriel Menino, who's a top class youngster who can play multiple different positions at a high level. Another such player is Hicham Boudaoui at Nice who can also play multiple positions, and looks like a big talent.

Sound, i'll get on board with either of these

We probably need to sign a homegrown player though and I don’t know of many good enough at a reasonable price.

Well, we're trying to sign Carvalho who's homegrown. If we get him, we'd have Trent, Kelleher, Jones, Elliott, Carvalho as homegrown players for a long time to come. Henderson, Milner, Gomez, Ox also still here until they retire / are sold.

I also think we'll sell a few of our foreign players this summer, so there will be spots open from our 17-man foreign quota. I expect Minamino, Origi and possibly even Firmino and Keita to go.

Yeah - Van den Berg, Kumetio, Bradley, Frudendorf, Bajcetic, Pitlauga, Musiałowski will all also be considered Homegrown when they hit 21 - not that I expect them all to make it.

I don’t see us moving as many senior players out in one window though.

I’m also preparing myself for the line that we’ve already done our major summer transfer activity.

Not saying I agree with it - just can’t see wholesale changes or “big” signings unless Salah is sold.

I get what you're saying about city and their attacking players. But even if we remove city and concentrate on Liverpool I still having a quality ball carrying player in midfield is the last jigsaw piece.

Ox used to be able to play like that but injuries have messed him up, Keita has it in him but it seems he's more defensive in his play, Thiago can do the side stepping excellently but he doesn't have the pace to burn away from players. Jones and Minamino are not top class ball carriers at all but occasionally can beat a man.

Now the little that I've seen from Fulham's Carvalho he could some way go towards being that guy. He looks like he has quick feet and can beat a man. Maybe that's why we have been after him?

I would be shocked if Keita was let go. Ox I expect to see leave. And despite the chatter regarding an extra year for Millie it wouldn't surprise me to see him hang his boots up and go into coaching. We definitely won't be moving on more than three so the question is where is the money going. As it stands I don't expect any change up top (we keep all 5) or to the defence (Gomez stays). No backup to Trent - I think Gomez / Bradley are going to be filling that slot as far as the coaching staff are concerned.

Therefore it comes down to Ox., Minamino & Origi and Milner perhaps. Two for midfield, no more signings than that, is all I can foresee. Fabs and Hendo rotating the DM slot if necessary so no BU DM. However the two we get sh(c )ould be good ones in Carvalho plus ... Bellingham ?!

We need a decent RB cover, Djed Spence is the best value English option I've seen.
Ox, Kieta and Thiago in MF cannot be relied upon, I'd happily move on at least Kieta and OX and getin Ward-Prowse, Bissouma (Subject to his current legal issues being resolved)/or Diallo and Neves. Much as I like Div and Mini, I'd sacrifice both for Raphinha.

Anyone else think Henderson might be the next Milner and could do a right back job if needed?

There is something magical about that LCM spot - since Gini left a variety of players were tried there and only Thiago and to some extent Keita are making it their own. You need to have a midfielder with great first touch, positional sense and strong physicality in that position to bring out the best out of Fabinho and make the whole structure solid.

Our attack is now interchangeable; our defensive 5 can also cope with absences. Now whenever I look at a teamsheet, the first place I look at is the DM and LCM - if those two are the right players, I know we will do well in the game.
