Fa cup pre match thread - Oldham

If it was only about winning the league, you'll have gotten no enjoyment at all in the past 25 years.

Are you saying you didn't celebrate Istanbul and Cardiff? Yeah, the league is the big one for us at the minute, but winning the cups is also important and we should do our best to continue to win silverware in any form.

I did.
I enjoyed Istanbul so much I want to get back into the Champions League. Seeing other clubs in Europe hurts.
I miss it. Winning the cups is important but we have missed doing well in the league so long that more than anything I just want us to do well in the League as the number one priority all else be damned.

Winning a cup with a lid on top is nice.
It makes me feel better when we've had a shit season and got knocked out of Europe. It gives me something to smile even though two weeks later the Mancs or Chelsea are lifting the PL Trophy.

Or rather it used to.
Say it as it is. It does feel like a consolation prize. I want to win. I want to be in Europe.

Win the FA Cup and you are in Europe.

Football is about momentum, getting knocked out by a shit low league team disrupts this momentum. Win the game and rest a few key players then and only then.

Besides if we are in Europe then the players will have to get by without 'resting' so we might as well get used to it now when the stakes aren't so high.

-------------- Mignolet ----------------
Kelly --- Toure --- Agger --- Smith
--------------- Lucas ------------------
------- Gerrard -- Rossiter ---------
Aspas ----- Alberto ----- Coutinho

I'm curious to try Alberto in the "false 9" role; that was his best position at Barca B by his own admission. Also, Aspas has a much better chance to make his way into the first team at RW rather than trying to compete with Suarez and Sturridge at CF. So it makes sense to keep him playing there, make him compete with Sterling and Moses.

Rossiter will have a dream-come-true moment starting alongside Gerrard.

All training with the big boys.

it never works when we play all the fringe/youth players .It probably should but it doesn't . Play the first team with just one or two changes . Get a good result to bring into the next games.

We should be using games like this to give the likes of Aspas, Alberto, Ilori a bit of game time to find their feet . I'm not mad about throwing a load of youngster in for the sake of it, but if one or two are deserving then it's worth a go.

We need to find out how deep or thin the squad is and this isn't a bad opportunity to test it

It's feared so but nothing definitive has been decided yet. It looks bleak though. Horrible shame.

Wow - I've had a lucky life. May not have hit the highest of highs but avoided lows like this

Apologies if this is quiffing of the highest order but are we on any channel?

welcome back @the_khl

I'm guessing that your ball sack is empty after the last weekend. I mean with Agger, Eriksen and Bendtner scoring.

I don't know which brother it was but I'm pretty sure he was only pretending to be asleep and was choking the bishop on the qt.

Anyone know why Brendan didn't bother turning up to the press conference?
Read that Pascoe was sent in his place.

I sometimes press the "send assistant" button on Football manager too.

That's a little bit too simplistic Gerry. If we don't make the Top 4 this season we'll lose one if our best ever players, lose the edge of being an attractive option for top players to want to move here and lose a ton of cash that we need to move the club forward. Top 4 simply must take priority over the FAC, sad though that may be for someone like myself who was born and raised on LFC competing, and winning, on all fronts.

Thats fine of you believe that going out of the cup at an early stage will improve our chances, I dont believe it will.

I think we need to rotate our squad throughout the season whether we do well in the cup or not. We should play a youth or two, just not 5 or 6.

Success breeds success.

There's absolutely no reason why we can't finish in the top 4 & have a crack at winning the FA Cup.

... and we absolutely should be trying to do both.

Agree. We do try to win it. Don't change the whole team. Keep a few regulars to ease in the young ones
But there's no reason we can't take Suarez, Coutinho and say Lucas / Henderson off and still win it.

Anyone that we bought for >5m pounds must be able to do the job against Oldham.
