I don't get it. You say :-

There seems to be this worryingly shortsighted trend of dismissing the domestic cups, in favour of hoping it gets us that extra yard towards CL qualification. I know which looks better in the history books, and we should have a squad capable of competing in two competitions, given the money we've spent.

and then put out a team which is more or less what others have said (i.e. resting senior players), to which I agree wholeheartedly BTW (and like that team).
As far as the quoted comment goes though, which would you prefer ? An FAC (but losing out on the Top 4 and losing Suarez) or a Top 4 slot and keeping Suarez and being able to add to the squad from a position of strength in the Summer ?

Read my later post, I wasn't taking issue with playing youngsters, I was taking issue with the "it's just a nothing cup" attitude of some people when it comes to the domestic trophies, that 4th place is of major importance over silverware - we've spent enough money and have a decent enough squad to compete in both and whatever team we put out should be capable of achieving the first hurdle against Oldham.

I know it's the romance of the cup and all that, but if for the second year running we fuck up because our fringe players aren't good enough, then the next time Rodgers asks if he can spunk £5m-£10m on an unknown, we should tell him to do one. As it is, we should play a team like the one I've mentioned and take the competition seriously, while obviously having "some" leeway depending on who we draw.

We should play our best team.

no way pls we are already so thin. i dont want any risk with the first team players and i dont give a fuck about FA cup, we might face aonther Wigan in the final. So keep playing the balance of reserves and few senior faces but we must rest players.

I had a better fucking day in Cardiff in 2006 than I've ever had for a finishing 4th party. I love winning cups, they are the best days out ever.

Rest Suarez and Henderson, that's it. If pros can't play two games in a week then there's something wrong. How many games did we play in 2001 when we won all 3 cups? I'd say we used a core of about 7 or 8 players in the majority of games. Sami must have played about 70 games that season.

That's pretty daft. The FA cup is one of the oldest and most cherished cup competitions in world football.
I understand that we have a few players who are in desperate need of a rest but we can't just fold and let Oldham beat us.

I think we have the capacity to field a semi-strong team capable of winning and at the same time allow players like Lucas, Henderson, Coutinho and Suarez to rest.

Agreed. The FA Cup means something.
I want us to win it and get CL footy. Jesus if we can't compete in the FA Cup when all great teams are competing in that, Europe, AND the league, how can we be expected to compete at all in Europe? It's barmy talk is what it is.
Have we really sunk to this?

If our squad is as good as you day it is then surely we don't have to pay our BEST team? I'm not saying we play without keepers. Just give Smith, Aspas, Alberto a go. If they can't beat Oldham no one can.

We don't know of course, but if we are strengthening with a few top players in January, then I wouldn't mind playing a few big boys, but if not, it's too much of a risk. I know the cups are important, but to four is a must. If we miss out on that because of more injuries or tired players etc, we will probably still lose Suarez and with the funds, struggle to bring in big name replacements. Bit doom and gloom, sure, but it's a risk I'd rather not take.
The further we go, the more congestion we get too. Being back in the cl for even one season makes all the difference. For obvious reasons.

Come on it's not like our reserves are composed of schoolboys who will wilt under the gaze of mighty Oldham. If they lose, they lose. So be it. They'll learn. But let's give them a go.

Fuck... We better stop the players training and doing all those other pesky things that might injure them.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert believes the majority of top-flight clubs would rather not have the distraction of the FA Cup.
Speaking before Saturday's third-round game with Sheffield United, Lambert was asked whether the FA Cup was something Premier League clubs could do without.
"I think if you asked the majority of them, if they were being honest, they probably would do," he told BBC WM.
"Not just because of the money but survival in the league is vital."
The Scot added: "It is realistic. That is the nature of it. If anyone says any differently then I am not so sure they will be telling the truth because the Premier League is the most vital thing that anyone wants to get into and we are no different."
Lambert's side are six points above the Premier League relegation zone and it is survival - rather than the visit of the League One Blades - that is his priority.
"Cup competitions, if you can get through, then absolutely I want to get through. I don't want to not get through but your main one is the league," he said.
"We don't have a massive squad and points are really important. If you are honest enough people will say the same."

i remember the days when winning the FA cup was a close second to winning the league . Now even the likes of Aston fucking villa couldn't give a shite . Does the modern day kid dream of avoiding relegation and getting top 4 ? fuck me .

we don't have the distraction of big knock out european games , cup games are usually played on their own weekends . We shouldn't have a fixtures pile up. I demand a good cup run if the draw goes our way .

NO.No.no.

Birmingham exist to win Trophies.
We exist to WIN THE LEAGUE.

If it was only about winning the league, you'll have gotten no enjoyment at all in the past 25 years.

Are you saying you didn't celebrate Istanbul and Cardiff? Yeah, the league is the big one for us at the minute, but winning the cups is also important and we should do our best to continue to win silverware in any form.

If a "foreign" manager had said the same as Lambert he would be slaughtered by the press/pundits

.

Didn't you end up knobbing a welsh bird that night ?

what about playing that german striker we bought as "one for the future"

I want to win the FA Cup.

When I see a photo of footballers celebrating at the end of a match it should feature a cup with the lid on someone's head and NOT because they've finished 4th and will get to play a qualifying match in some far flung place in fucking July.

What the fucks going on?
