Let's hope his loyalty is rewarded and also lets hope McGeady can play like he did on Saturday and likewise, McClean can perform like he did during the second half of the season for the tournament. I would like to see Long starting but Trapattoni likes the target man and little man combination up front and Keane seems to be his preferred choice as the little man.
I wouldn't start Keane or Doyle; I'd go with Walters & Long. The forward line doesn't bother me too much though as they're all fairly decent but our central midfield is poor and our defence is shocking (bar Given). If Trap gets us passed the group stage he'll start to attract Jack Charlton levels of hero worship.

You think Richard Dunne is shocking?

That's the bizarre thing, individually the defenders don't look that impressive but Trapattoni has got them working well as a cohesive unit, conceding 7 goals in 10 qualifiers with three coming in the one game. Very, very poor in central midfield though.

Aye but we rode our luck in qualification e.g. how did we not concede in Russia, and there were a few other games where we were lucky not to concede more.

Richard Dunne is our best defender but he's a long way shy of being a top defender.

Undefeated in 13 and only conceeding 3 is not luck in my opinion. He has a system, and players that suit the system, and work hard for the team. He's proven analysts wrong time and again with his selections.

He's certainly proved me wrong as well Gerry. Individually our current first team are very limited but their results belie the teams shortcomings. I wouldn't be surprised if we qualify from the group even though logic dictates we won't.

I agree with a lot of that Nessie but - You don't have a "system and style" suited to win this thing though. Actually, scrap that - you don't have a system or style suited to even come close to winning it.

Ross has a point, less Gerrard's are what's required.

If England deployed Trappatoni's system they'd have a chance in this competition. Thankfully they won't .

The English players wouldn't play under Traps system. It's the reason he didn't want the likes of Ireland to play. You need players who don't think they are better than they are.

Trappatoni, for all his ability, is not a manager I'd like to manage say Denmark.

We don't want a team first and foremost there to defend. We want the exact opposite and that's the type of players we'd like to unearth too, players familiar with the ball and likely to be in possession.

Maybe England would've enjoyed more success with a defensive minded coach, but I'm not sure it's the right approach either as they've got loads of technical sound players too. My main concern with England on an International level is their sheer lack of a red line. With every new coach a new approach and style is being tried out but none of them have addressed the real issue - don't play your individual elleven best players if they don't gel or match.

Lampard should've been axed when Gerrard was on top of his game for starters.

Italy's final 23:

Defenders: Abate (Milan), Balzaretti (Palermo), Barzagli (Juventus), Bonucci (Juventus), Chiellini (Juventus), Maggio (Napoli), Ogbonna (Torino);

Midfielders: De Rossi (Roma), Diamanti (Bologna), Giaccherini (Juventus), Marchisio (Juventus), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Thiago Motta (Paris St. Germain), Nocerino (Milan), Pirlo (Juventus);

Forwards: Balotelli (Manchester City), Borini (Roma), Cassano (Milan), Di Natale (Udinese), Giovinco (Parma).

Euro 2012: Ukraine hits back after Sol Campbell warns fans
Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine has hit back after former England defender Sol Campbell warned fans not to travel to the tournament next month.
In a BBC Panorama programme, Campbell advised supporters to stayat home because of the threat of racism and violence.
But Ukraine's Euro 2012 director Markian Lubkivsky said Campbell's remarks were "insolent".
"We are getting ready for the great football festival," Lubkivsky said.
"To be honest, from the Uefa point of view, I don't see any dangers for citizens of different nationalities to stay in Ukraine."

“Nazi symbols can be seen at ... any match in England, but does it mean that fans should not come to London for the Olympics?”
Oleg VoloshynUkrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman
The BBC documentary investigated violence and racism at football matches in Ukraine and Poland.
Theo Walcott's family have revealed they will not be travelling to the tournament because of their concerns about racism.
And Campbell believes Uefa should not have chosen the countries as hosts of such a prestigious event in the first place.
"I think that they were wrong, because what they should say is that 'if you want this tournament, you sort your problems out'," said the former Arsenal and Tottenham player.
But Lubkivsky said visiting fans to Ukraine had nothing to worry about.
He said: "If the player Campbell has such a vision, than it is his own point of view, and it can not be projected for the whole country.
"His statement is simply insolent for us and we do not understand the aim of it."
Former Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko says there is "no real problem" with racism in Ukraine.
And Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Voloshyn said fans had nothing to fear.
"Nazi symbols can be seen at ... any match in England, but does it mean that fans should not come to London for the Olympics?," he said.

Agreed. At best we are a QF team, maybe SF if a bit of luck goes our way. Too many prima donnas and not enough tactical acumen to adapt to situations within a game, let alone several games against differing styles. What we see now is the rewards of the standard of coaching 20 years ago at youth level. It will take at least that again to change the approach and maybe win anything.
