Carrick holds possession better than any English midfielder by fucking miles.

The fact Scott fucking Parker is in the side ahead of him cos he plays for a London side & runs around a lot tells you everything that is wrong with perception of football in this country.

Eh? Whats with the Carrick hard on?

He's Mr Average. I dont think Parker or Barry are all that either though.

Gerrard and Lampard rarely turn it on for England.

We are fucked.

Yup, he reatins possession well.

Doesn't really win it back though does he?

England don't have the players to play the type of football carrick thrives in.

Its Gerrard as captain that shows whats wrong with football in England. Too many get by for too long on reputation

England have never been able to retain possession, one player will not change that. Play to your strengths, high tempo and physical strength with the odd set piece thrown in. Before we change the way the national team plays, we should change the philosophy of the kids who will be the next generation of internationals. Carrick would have been a poor selection as he is weaker than most physically, offers little protection and slows play down. The rest of the squad are not on his wavelength to try to actually play possession football, so pick the players that fit the system and style.

Good post. Don't think I necessarily agree but it does make some sense.

That said, the fa have just announced that the young sides will be playing 7 a side games & taught close possession football all the way through, yet roy Hodgson is playing a rigid 4-4-2. Doesn't seem to fit.

TBF to the face-rubbing headbanger, he has to make the best of what we have at the moment. It'll take years for the effects of the new reforms to work their way through to the national side.

Regarding Carrick the simple fact is he would get nowhere near the Spanish, German or even French squads and the fact that he should have walked into the English squad is a sad reflection on the state of England's current crop of midfielders.

I heard Trevor Brooking say the other day that he won't mind so much if the team drops out early so long as they play attractive football! Well good luck with that, Brookley! What a dire squad.

Thomas Sørensen out, Kasper Schmeichel in.

Sad for the experienced Sørensen but to be honest I don't think he's out best goalie anymore.

French squad:

Goalkeepers: Cedric Carrasso (Bordeaux), Hugo Lloris (Lyon), Steve Mandanda (Marseille)

Defenders: Gael Clichy (Manchester City/ENG), Mathieu Debuchy (Lille), Patrice Evra (Manchester United/ENG), Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal/ENG), Philippe Mexes (AC Milan/ITA), Adil Rami (Valencia/ESP), Anthony Reveillere (Lyon)

Midfielders: Yohan Cabaye (Newcastle United/ENG), Alou Diarra (Marseille), Florent Malouda (Chelsea/ENG), Marvin Martin (Sochaux), Blaise Matuidi (Paris Saint-Germain), Yann M'vila (Rennes), Samir Nasri (Manchester City/ENG)

Forwards: Hatem Ben Arfa (Newcastle United/ENG), Karim Benzema (Real Madrid/ESP), Olivier Giroud (Montpellier), Jeremy Menez (Paris Saint-Germain), Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich/GER), Mathieu Valbuena (Marseille)

Dear God no! Paul Green and now McShane..... Should've been replaced with Coleman and either Wes Hoolahan, Sean Murray or Stephen Quinn.
The Irish squad looks to be the weakest in the competition and there are some very talented players who should be invoved but Trapp didn't pick them. He puts a lot of store in loyalty and had stayed pretty-much faithful to the same group of players over the last 4 years. You can't knock his results as we qualified for the final stages but I do think that if the likes of Murray, Pilkington, Hoolahan, Coleman, McCarthy etc had been included we'd have a better chance of progressing.

A bit thin in central defence. Weird that they've left out both Yanga-Mbiwa and Sakho. They will also miss Remy upfront. But that midfield looks very strong.

Alou Diarra in the French squad I see.
Did he even play a pre season game with us in 3 seasons?

Let's hope his loyalty is rewarded and also lets hope McGeady can play like he did on Saturday and likewise, McClean can perform like he did during the second half of the season for the tournament. I would like to see Long starting but Trapattoni likes the target man and little man combination up front and Keane seems to be his preferred choice as the little man.

I agree with a lot of that Nessie but - You don't have a "system and style" suited to win this thing though. Actually, scrap that - you don't have a system or style suited to even come close to winning it.

Ross has a point, less Gerrard's are what's required.
