Dortmund vs Liverpool post-match thread

I'm an Allen fan too. As i've said numerous times before, Allen thrives in a midfield where he's the 2nd midfielder out of a midfield three. We usually have Henderson playing that role. I think Allen will look very good again if he returns to Swansea. Defensive midfielder, Allen and then Siggurdson in the attacking role would make a decent three for them.

I wonder if he's given Klopp an additional option of using him and Coutinho on either side of Sturridge in the return leg. Keeps Origi's pace and strength in the team for when we go long as well as the ability to pull wide and stretch the defence, while also adding Sturridge's superior finishing ability. That wouldn't have been an option earlier in the season when Origi was still looking like a lost kid. Kudos to the lad on his improvement over the season.

I am starting to think Sturridge should be classified as an AM rather than a CF at this point. Daniel's natural game is to drop deep into midfield and try to do some playmaking (which he's pretty good at, to be fair), while up front he often seems isolated and bullied by physical defenders, unable to win any headers or hold up the ball, unless he receives it already facing the goal. This is why I think we were so flat in attack in the games Sturridge and Firmino started together – they occupied the same spaces and just got in each other's way. So playing with Sturridge alone up front = playing with a 6-man midfield or a "false nine."

With this in mind, it makes sense to play Origi and Sturridge together with the former leading the line and Sturridge roaming around and doing his thing. The only question is, would you choose AM Sturridge over AMs Firmino or Lallana? Does his attacking contribution outweigh the defensive shortcomings? So that's the big dilemma for Klopp right now – should he play a system with a proper #9 (Origi) or a more fluid system with a "false 9" (Firmino or Sturridge or both).

I'm happy for him to do that - what we don't need against Dortmund were some of the stunts Mignolet and Sakho tried to pull off with the ball at their feet. They really do my head in - just play it simple and pick the right opponents to show boat, you cunts.

That said, all three had good games overall, but please - stop fucking with our tickers!

I don't think Mingolet was showboating. He just did that drag back instinctively as he hesitated to clear his linea first time. It's not like he's pulling a Neuer doing Cruyff turns in his box.

How good was Weidenfeller's save from Coutinho? His weight was shifted the other way and the ball was behind him by the time he got to it. Cracking save.......the prick

  1. A bit disappointed with Dortmund's performance. I think they initially gave us too much respect; not sure if it was the Klopp factor or the perception of Liverpool as a "big club" in Europe (despite our domestic and Euro results undermining that perception) but they were slightly cautious from the start and only really went for the jugular after conceding, in the closing 10 minutes of the first half. Maybe coach Tuchel's inexperience showed there – British lower or mid-table teams have been showing us much less respect and a lot of the time our defense did crack under pressure. Hope Tuchel doesn't draw a lesson from this in time for the 2nd leg.

I kinda know what you mean but perhaps suprised by their performance would be more fitting for a Liverpool fan to say. Disappointed with Dortmund's performance is a bit odd.

Very good save. It looked behind him at one stage. I think Coutinho should have scored though.

Well, I wanted them to give us a baptism by fire and see how our players stand up to it. Instead, they were a bit nervous themselves. I'm not really complaining, but I do want to see us come up against a really great side playing at the top of their level at some point. Beating disjointed United or City doesn't really count.

Every single midfielder in the world looks better in a midfield three, because it's easier.

I don't think you can really fault him, he hit it low and very hard, it was an outrageous save by the goalie.

I think it's why opinion is so divided on Sakho, those who love him see these great games he has, those who hate him see the Spurs game, if he could just find some consistency he'd be absolutely outstanding.
I don't agree Mystic; those of us who don't rate him DO see the good games, like last night, and we know he's capable of these type of performances but the issue is consistency. You can't win things with a CB who is brilliant and awful in equal measures and that's what his LFC career has given us. I want him gone because I don't think he's good enough to become consistently good.

Even last night kinda summed up his time with us though. He was a tower for most of the game, but had lapses in him where he carelessly gave the ball away under little pressure. He did it in the build up to the goal. It's moments like that which make him such a risk.

Missed the second half but what a stupid fucking tackle by Moreno. He is extremely lucky that the ref was Spanish.

I wonder if Sakho's problem is that he overthinks things too much. Wasnt that a problem that both Mignolet and Lovren cited regarding their own troubles? They started playing better after trusting their instincts.

I think you may very well be on to something there, and last night was a good illustration. Sakho's best moments came when the danger was immediate and he didn't have time to overthink things.

Perhaps but it nice when a team picks a system to suit the player they have or at least tries to build a midfield unit going forward. We had a perfect unit with Mascherano holding, Alonso in the deep play maker role and Gerrard in the advanced attacking role. Christ, that was some talented trio.

I might make a thread on midfield systems because we always seems to have one or two players who are a stuck in a role that doesn't fully utilise their talents. Sahin was a big example of this. Allen is another. We often hear on here that player x can't play with player y in midfield. It will be interesting to see what Pep does when he arrives. He'll probably bring a Kroos, Gundongan (when he plays as a deep lying playmaker) type of player with him.

We need to contact the lady who wrote the research paper on the ability of money to buy happiness. Maybe she can help us analyze why Sakho fluidly swings between having mad, bad moments and crazy good ones in 90 minutes.

I wanted them to be shit, and have a nightmare.

How good was Origi? Hold up play, pace, skill, they were terrified of him when he got the ball. He's incredibly intelligent too for a 20 year old striker, he knew when to shield the ball and wait for support and when to just go at them. The miss probably summed up his finishing ability but it's early days with him and that side of his game might come as he grows in confidence. At the minute he's looking a very good buy.

He's no Cissé that's for damn sure

Great performance. I like that Liverpool. It's the other one I hate.
As for them singing YNWA, I'll never like it. Same with Celtic. Get your own fucking song.

I think there's a difference between Celtic doing it and Dortmund. Dortmund seem to look up to us in a way that's slightly endearing, as if they view us as the sort of club they'd like to be.

A very good performance overall, and a positive result, which shows that the right set-up and tactics can nullify a superior team. It could be argued that they didn't play that well, but sometimes one thing is the result of the other. We'll find out at Anfield.

Mignolet (7) Couple of heart in mouth moments with one especially badly executed Cruyff turn, but made several good catches and clearances, and made comfortable saves. Won't be happy with the total lack of marking for the corner

Clyne (7) Disciplined and hard-working. He did more defending than attacking but that's understandable. Improved on recent form.

Lovren (8) Should have scored, and was once or twice so far out of position it was comical, but overall a very good display. He cleared out anything that came his way,a nd made one superlative tackle block that looked a certain goal. Impressive.

Sakho (8) One or two head-spinningly stupid passes aside, he was as good against Dortmund as he was against United. Several great interceptions and blocks, and formed a very sturdy defensive wall with Lovren. He still looks as if he's got his boots on the wrong way round at times, and he does not bring a sense of calm at all but if he plays like this all the time, he will be a real asset. But he doesn't, does he? Every couple of games we get a Spurs. And that's the problem. He'll always have one of those game sup his sleeve, which is why he needs replacing.

Moreno (7) Needs to learn when (and how) to tackle, but his pace and strength were very useful. Diligent display and merited his selection

Milner (7) He worked his nuts off all night, and delivered several good set-pieces. Can slot in and do a good job almost anywhere, but his passing is still occasionally awry.

Can (7) Very poor first half, when he looked sloppy and laboured, but huge improvement in his composure and influence in the second, and started to dominate more.

Henderson (3) Bypassed time and again, and couldn't pass straight. Not sure what was wrong with him, but his injury was a blessing. Awful.

Coutinho (7) Not as his magical, willo-the-wisp best, largely because he only really had Origi to aim at, but stll created some great chances and was a threat from the left hand side. Two good efforts well saved.

Lallana (6) Indefatigable pressing and a hugely impressive workrate in general, but not really very inventive or creative with the ball, and never really created much of a threat.

Origi (8) Justified his selection with a hugely impressive display. I don't rate Origi as highly as most seem to, because I have a fondness for strikers who are natural finishers, which I doubt Origi will ever be, but all credit to him, he did exactly what we needed him to; worked hard, ran channels, held the ball up, closed down, and then scored a nice goal out of nothing. Should have had another, but that shouldn't take anything away from him. Well played.

Subs:

Allen (7) Came on and immediately we looked tidier and more coherent. Brought calm along with his usual pressing. Never going to be good enough to start for a team with genuine high ambitions, but his usefulness as a squad option is undeniable on nights like this.

Which is somewhat ironic, because lots of Liverpool fans, myself included, see Dortmund as the blueprint of how we should be.
