Does spending money guarantee you success in football ?

Loads of people having this debate in a transfer thread but I think it's a topic worthy of it's own thread. My tuppence worth - yes I believe it does, especially in these days of money grabbing footy player whores. It does, however, have to be spent wisely. I think Mourinho did that at Chelsea. It's obvious Barcelona have. City though I reserve judgement about. There's no doubt they're a vastly improved team but, as others have pointed out, they lack consistency and they seem to buy for buying sake at times and appear very wasteful. They've got more strikers than any club in the league yet they're forever linked with more.

So my answer - yes, if invested wel, money buys you success.

Sadly it is very important these days, but only if you have a decent manager to spend it and use the players correctly.

Getting success without any money at all would be much more difficult, put it that way

Money will guarantee succes in football - but only if you are in a position where you'd get an obvious comparative advantage compared to your fiercest competitors.

Chelsea where in that position six years ago as no-one else in England had ever had those kind of money to spend on such short time.

Inter were in it as well five years ago as Juve got relegated due to the calciopoli-scandal and AC Milan was severely set back starting the league on minus 17 points (or thereabouts).

Citeh's position now however is slightly different and I wouldn't bet on them winning the title within the next three years.

Real is a good example of a club spending loads of money and only gaining little. IF they don't win either the La Liga or the Champions League this Season they'll probably part with Mourinho (or he with them) and another £100M could go down the drain.

Well of course it will guarantee you success.

Blackburn did it before and won the Prem, Leeds spent gazillions and were a succesful side, Manu have been spending millions on players for years and are a success, Chelsea own the league three times and did well in the Champions league.

I think City started off in the right direction, they brough Prem proven players like Barry, Kolo Toure, Adebayor, Lescott, Given etc and they played well and got themselves in a goo position.
They then spent millions for the sake of it, they didn't need Balotelli for example they have enough quality players to play in that position and Dzeko was imo unnecessary. They need a little bit of consistancy they have a very good squad and only need the addition of a few players to make the step up.

No guarantee in terms of trophies but much more likely to win..especially if you have a manager who shits trophies

It does guarantee a degree of success dependent on the right coach and type of players he gets in.

FC København are already head and shoulders above anyone else in Denmark, mainly due to their financial stature founded over the past ten years, and with Abramovich Jr. showing interest in buying his share and inject further £50M into the club they'd probably be looking at the Superliga-trophy for many years to come too.

Boring and predictable from a domestic view but probably the only way Denmark would ever have a chance of having a team competing in Champions League on a regular basis. And one can only hope other investors will follow and lift their main competitors further as well.

In February 1979 Trevor Francis became the game's first 1m pound transfer, and three months later he scored the winning goal in the European Cup Final for Forest.

It's always been a money game.

Perhaps a similar system to the one applied in the NFL - with a salary/spending cap - could be the way forward?

Anywho UEFA are considering changing the rules with their Financial Fair Play regulation.

In broad lines UEFA will prevent clubs from spending more money than they earn. In the future clubs aren't allowed to run their business with a deficit and if they do they'd be expelled from playing in the Europa League and Champions League tournaments.

I'm all for a salary cap.

Would be very interesting indeed. Perhaps a somewhat more fair game could be the outcome?

The richest clubs in their own countries Bayern, Ajax, PSV, Lyon, PSG, Porto, Benfica, Galatasaray, Olympiakos, Inter, Juventus, Milan, Celtic, Rangers, Real, Barcelona, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have the lions share of all trophies in Europe over the past half century.
There are exceptions but yes of course it matters. Spending wisely and managerial stability are the other key factors.

Are most of them not the richest clubs because they have won trophies though? Success brings money, and money helps bring success.

Which is a great point. We were second tier when Shankly took over and we built it up. You have to say the same for the likes of Man U, Arsenal as well. Other clubs, with that success missing have obviously tried to buy into that i.e. your City and Chelsea. The problem with that is that they expect success to generate further fan support - and that's not that easy which could be a problem because a business model is based on your projected custom. It remains to see whether Chelsea or City can ever generate a fan base akin to the more historical clubs. In fairness to City though they do have a decent fan base.

There wasnt the money in the game then though Sunny. A Shanks story could never happen again.
Sociadad and Celta Vigo got close, and in the german league the odd team has won individual leagues but to actually become one of that list above youre looking at hundreds of millions of investment like Chelsea and Man City.
