Why would Groningen sell him after like 13 games.
Its surely all BS.
Why would Villa sell Downing after arguably his best season?
Why would Newcastle sell Carroll after the best six months he's ever shown?
Why would Sunderland sell Henderson after a decent six months?

A pattern of clubs captilizing on players during purple patches is emerging!
Jordan Henderson was at Sunderland from the age of 13 and spent 3 years in the first team. Likewise Carroll 5 years in the Newcastle first team. Downing spent 2 years at Villa and was signed when they were on a splurge and sold as Lerner pulled the reigns in.
Thats nothing like a player playing 11 league games and then being sold.
Im sure there are examples of it happening, but id be very surprised.

I hear what you're saying man... but as someone else said, Groningen only got in the region of 7M for Suarez so if someone is offering them that now for this guy they may as well take it. It's good business.
Maybe i just dont want it to be true because he looks shit.

Has anyone actually seen him play a game or two?

I'm really not excited about this. Has Jovanovic written all over it.

He's younger of course but not even from one of the best Dutch teams and yet his scoring record isn't impressive. Hope I'm wrong here if there's indeed truth in these rumours.

Perhaps he's got a good shot-to-goal ratio? Is he moneyball material? Binny?
He's just had a great half season in an otherwise uninspiring career. It stands to reason that we'd go wading in with an inflated bid.
Thats harsh. He made his debut in 2010 and is only 20 years old. Its nothing at all like Jovanovic who was 28.
I wasn't agreeing with the Jovanovic comparison. After all, we didn't pay anything for Jovanovic. I would say Andy Carroll is a slightly better yardstick.
Cant argue with that.

The Jova-comparison was merely down to the fact that this is another almost completely unknown player from a mediocre European club that we're about to pay big bucks for.

Jova was a free, yes, but his rumoured salary and sign-on fee made him a rather expensive flop despite not having to pay a fee to Anderlecht (I reckon it was).

I know this Texeira is a lot more interesting prospect alone due to the fact he's like 7 years younger or thereabouts than Jova, but that's not necessarily a benchmark of quality. If we were to buy a striker from the Dutch league I want us to go for someone like Suarez who's proved over years how good he is or someone with an insane scoring record. Not a player from mid-table club with 5 goals in 20 matches.

I may be a bit harsh on the lad having never seen him play but I'm rather convinced he's not one that'll take us forward anytime soon - if ever. Still hopefull it's only agent-spin and we're not even aware of him.

To me this link seems like almost reverse Moneyball to me. Unless of course there's somthing I've missed. I hope there is.

Buying a player young and trying to develop him is very much the core principal of moneyball?
Well thats about as uninspiring an 82 seconds as ive ever seen.
Hahaha that made me chuckle. Just sat there waisting 82 seconds on absolutely nothing of note myself. Even highlights of first-touches going awol and passes straight into the opposition? Can someone please show this video to Kenny/Comolli/someone?

Must've misunderstood it then as I thougth stats were more important than age?

Wasn't it meant to be focusing on end-product rather than hype/age/persona/etc? I mean 5 goals in 20 starts for Herenveen isn't going to make my money ball that's for sure.

?

It's that too, but seeing cheap potential, based on stats but not just goal ratio, and nurturing it is a key aspect. I think.

Re: Harry Redknapp.David Texeira (The Groningen striker)

I see that Nicky maynard fella is in talks with wigan. Was someone in here raving about him recently?

Yeah, Pesam did.

This Texeira looks really good running away from goal and laying the ball off to the centre half, from whom he received it a half second before.

Moneyball is about getting players cheaper than they should be. We haven't been using it very much.
Apart from Bellamy whom has indeed delivered, and to some extent Enrique and Adam despite the verdict still beeing out on them, we are yet to see whether you can be succesful with this Moneyball-approach in football. To some extent I believe you can but I guess you'll have to give it some time at least to see the real potential.

Anyways unless he's some sort of well-hidden footballing-omen this Texeira-chap I just can't see us beeing in for him, despite his tender age. There's nothing in his stats at least telling us a story about a major prospect/potential yet to be discovered. And he really doesn't look a flair-player either from his Youtube clips.

You don't think it's possible to be successful by buying players that are good value for money?

You're paying far too much attention to 'Moneyball'. It's all a load of shite and clearly not our strategy, or at least not a decisive componet of it.

We're shit scared of good foreign players leaving us for Spain, so we're attempting to build a side which is British at the core, and we're overpaying considerably for it.

He also has a first touch so heavy that his second touch takes place about ten feet away from where he received the ball. Luckily you get more time on the ball in England so it should be cool.

Have I said that?

I think indeed it's the way to be succesful, buying players that are good value for money? Hence why I often suggest some unknown player from say the Scandinavian or Dutch Leagues that'll always come cheaper than the odd Englishman for instance.

This Texeira bloke doesn't at all strike me as good valule for money. That's my main issue. But then again have never seen him play so perhaps he'll be a shrewd buy. £7M is a lot of money mind.

That was deliberate. But only to prove a point in regards to me not really believeing in this Texeira link. Again, haven't seen him play, why I'd be reluctant to comment further, he just doesn't strike me as what we need.

Personally I only reckon we've paid way over the odds for one player. Downing will come in handy, I still believe that, Henderson is for the future and has got considerable talent, and Adam, Enrique and Bellers are all good buys imo. And all rather Moneyball-looking. Adam with his major assist and goals tally for a midfielder. Enrique with his great closing down stats and Bellers with his great scoring record. Especially considering his availability.

I don't know much about Teixera but wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Maynard is more prolific than him in the EPL and he'll cost about half as much.

And when his goals dry up after the move, we'll have a carbon copy. Then I think we should play him on the wing.

At this point I'd be delighed if he had something to dry up. Right now we don't have strikers whose goals can wet up in the first place.
