Saints are delighted to announce the signing of Crystal Palace and England Under 21 defender Nathaniel Clyne.
The 21-year-old this morning signed a four-year deal to commit himself to the Club until 2016, and has flown out to join the squad on their training camp in Évian-les-Bains.
Clyne was out of contract at Selhurst Park but, due to his age, Saints are required to pay a fee to his former club.
Discussions between the two clubs regarding compensation are still ongoing. If a fee cannot be agreed, it will be set at an independent tribunal.
Right-back Nathaniel has been linked with the likes of Manchester United during the past 12 months, but he has chosen to make the move to St Mary's following talks with First Team Manager Nigel Adkins and Executive Chairman Nicola Cortese.
"I'm overwhelmed, really," Clyne told saintsfc.co.uk on his first full day in Évian.
"As soon as I heard that Southampton were in for me, I was happy and I knew that this was the place where I could try to improve my football, further my career and get a chance to play in the Barclays Premier League.
"It's a club with a lot of ambition - the gaffer told me that they would want to be pushing for European football.
"We've got good players here - a young bunch of good, talented players who are destined for the top, so I don't see why we can't do it.
First Team Manager Adkins was pleased by the acquisition of Clyne, saying: "We're delighted that we can finally announce that we've brought Nathaniel Clyne into the group to help us kick onto the next level.
"There's a lot of work going on behind the scenes all summer and, with [Head of Recruitment] Paul Mitchell and Nicola Cortese, we work very hard behind the scenes to make things happen.
"For the last three years Nathaniel has been a very attack-minded full-back who bombs on - he's got pace and he's a good one-on-one defender.
"He got into the Championship Team of the Year last year, and for such a young age he has had a lot of first-team football in the Championship.
"All being well, we can push him onto the next level now."
Former Chelsea defender Khalid Boulahrouz has completed his free transfer to Sporting Lisbon after penning a two-year contract with Portuguese club.
The Dutch defender was a free agent this summer after his ex-employers VfB Stuttgart decided not to renew his contract at the club. Many sides were in the running for the central defender but the player chose Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon.
Boulahrouz has turned out for various clubs in his career. The versatile defender started at RKC Waalwijk in 2001 before moving to Hamburg in 2004. He then joined Chelsea in 2006 and after enduring a difficult time at Stamford Bridge, returned to Germany with Stuttgart in 2008.
And now after four years at Stuttgart, he is ready to start a new journey with the Leoes. The 30-year-old has expressed his happiness at joining the side and said that he wants to win titles with the Estadio Jose Alvalade outfit.
"I am very ambitious. I like the club and I have a feeling that I can fit in well at the club”, the defender told Sporting’s official website.
“I have come here to help the team win titles and I will give everything to achieve this goal.”
Boulahrouz appeared in 21 games for Stuttgart last season and was also a part of the Dutch Euro 2012 squad. The Leoes fans will be hoping that the defender can provide stability at the back and help the club win back the title after 11 years.
Scott Loach has told the Club website that moving to Town is a 'dream come true' for him.
The stopper has penned a three-year deal at Portman Road, with the option of an additional 12 months, after Blues agreed a fee with Watford for his services.
Now the new Blue, a boyhood fan of the Club, is itching to meet up with his Town team-mates in preparation for the new season.
"It's a dream come true for me to finally be an Ipswich Town player," the former England U21 international told the Club website.
"I remember coming to watch Town from the age of about six or seven and I've always wanted to come and play here. I've been lucky enough to do that for Watford when playing against Ipswich, but to now be a Town player really is a dream come true for me.
"The focus now is working hard to break into the side and really kick on with the lads in trying to get this Club into the Premier League."
He looks like an Apache Squaw! 😀Holy fuck, Zlatan's ugly !
Roma have confirmed the outright purchase of Genoa midfielder Panagiotis Tachtsidis on a five year deal for a fee of €2.5m.
The 21-year-old ’s move was anticipated to be announced this evening in light of Andrea Bertolacci’s transfer in the opposite direction being finalised earlier today.
However, where Bertolacci has moved to the Grifone on a co-ownership basis, the Giallorossi have announced that they have concluded a deal to take full ownership of promising Greek Tachtsidis.
“AS Roma announces that it has signed with Genoa an agreement for the outright purchase of the rights of player Panagiotis Tachtsidis, for a fee of €2.5m,” read a statement posted on Roma’s website.
“The player has signed a contract for five years, expiring on June 30, 2017.”
F.C. Internazionale has signed Gaby Mudingayi from Bologna F.C. on loan with an option to purchase. The paperwork relating to the transfer was filed at the Lega Serie A offices this morning.
The 30-year-old Belgian midfielder arrives at Inter following spells at Gent (Jupiler League, 2000 to January 2003, 63 appearances), Torino (Serie B, January 2003 to 2004, 34 appearances and 1 goal), Lazio (Serie A, 2005 to 2008, 69 appearances and 1 goal) and Bologna (Serie A, 2008 to June 2012, 125 appearances and 2 goals).
Mudingayi made 6 appearances with the Belgium Under-21 team and has earned 17 caps with the senior side since making his debut in 2003.
Belgian midfielder Gaby Mudingayi has put pen to paper on his Inter contract to officially complete a transfer from Bologna this afternoon.
The 30-year-old Zaire-born player was at the Nerazzurri’s training ground today to complete his medical and sign terms on a three-year contract with the Milanese giants.
Previously linked with Napoli, Mudingayi joins Inter on an initial loan basis, with a reported fee of €1.5m agreed with Bologna for the transfer to be made permanent next summer.
Immediately upon confirmation of the news, the footballer spoke to journalists.
“I’m really glad to be here. Can we win the Scudetto? We’ll try to please the fans,” he enthused.
Mudingayi made 128 appearances for Bologna in four seasons with the club and before that has had spells in Italy with Torino and Lazio.
Argentinian goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga has this morning joined Saints on a four-year deal.
The 20-year-old moves from npower League 2 side Gillingham for an undisclosed fee and has now linked up with his new team during their French training camp.
Gazzaniga - pronounced Gass-a-neega - will train with Saints in Évian-les-Bains today with a view to being involved in tomorrow's friendly against Évian Thonon Gaillard.
As part of the deal to bring the former Valencia stopper to St Mary's, Tommy Forecast will join the Gills on a season-long loan once the Saints squad return to England next week.
Paulo said: "I am very happy because signing for a Premier League team is a dream.
"It's mad because I only played a few matches last season - it's a crazy situation.
"The Club has a lot of ambition, so I was eager to sign. I can't wait to get started."
First Team Manager Nigel Adkins said: "We have been looking for a young, hungry goalkeeper and Paulo fitted that mould.
"We are delighted that we have secured his services and that he has come out to Évian to join up with the group.
"He will be in an environment that we think will help him improve under the guidance of our goalkeeping coach, Jim Stannard, and Kelvin Davis, who has a lot of experience and I know that he will take him under his wing."
Nigel Adkins says he believes new goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga can get even better during his time with Saints.
The 20-year-old signed a four-year deal with the Club this morning after joining up with the squad in Évian-les-Bains.
And First Team Manager Adkins is excited about working with the former Gillingham stopper:
"He is very ambitious, he is young and hungry and wants to do well for Southampton Football Club," he told saintsfc.co.uk.
"He was with Valencia the year before last before coming over to England and getting some games under his belt at Gillingham, which is where our recruitment department spotted him.
"He has a good stature about himself - he is a young lad who has an assured confidence about himself, which is good.
"I know from speaking with him that he has a very good attitude and work ethic, which is important for us.
"He will be in an environment that we think will help him improve under the guidance of our goalkeeping coach, Jim Stannard, and Kelvin Davis, who has a lot of experience and I know that he will take him under his wing.
"Competition for places is very important but, from a goalkeeping point of view, you always work very closely with each other."
With the Saints manager being a former goalkeeper himself, Adkins has a good idea of what makes for a successful custodian.
So what were the attributes that attracted him to Gazzaniga? "The big thing is that Paulo is young," he said.
"If you look at Kelvin for an example, he had a superb year last year and the older that you get the decision making process that you have becomes better.
"You will make some mistakes when you are younger, but as long as you learn from them and don't make the same mistakes twice then you become a better player.
"Distribution is very important - especially in the modern game - and that is something that Paulo exceeds in, but ultimately it is about keeping the ball out of the net."
As part of the deal to bring the former Valencia stopper to St Mary's, Tommy Forecast has moved to Gillingham on a season-loan loan.
"He will fight for a place there to help him get his career going," said Nigel.
"I think it is fair to say that he hasn't had the games that goalkeepers need to have since he has been here at Southampton and, at this stage of his career, he needs to be fighting for a place."
UEFA Europa League play-off hopefuls Sporting Clube de Portugal have signed Argentina defender Marcos Rojo from FC Spartak Moskva for an undisclosed fee, with the left-back-cum-centre-back agreeing a four-year contract.
The 22-year-old spend just one season at Spartak, having joined from Club Estudiantes de La Plata, and will now team up with two compatriots in Lisbon, Fito Rinaudo and Emiliano Ínsua. "Sporting treated me well and they made me feel that they needed me," said the nine-times capped Rojo, who played in just eight league games for last season's Russian runners-up. "I want to grab a place in the team and try to win titles
Valencia CF have secured the services of Argentine midfielder Fernando Gago. The club announced the news via their official Twitter page with the following message: “Fernando Gago is due to arrive at the Valencia Palace Hotel (21 h.) after an agreement was reached between Valencia, Real Madrid and the player”.
The midfielder, who makes his return to the Liga BBVA after spending last season on loan in Italy with Roma, will be officially presented at 18:00 CEST at Mestalla.
Galatasaray have completed the transfer of Nordin Amrabat from Kayserispor.
The Istanbul club released a statement on the Public Disclosure Forum (KAP) confirming the move, "Galatasaray have signed Kayserispor player Nordin Amrabat for €8 million on a five-year contract.
"We will also pay PSV Eindhoven €600,000 due to a clause in his contract. Amrabat will on a €1 million salary 2012-13, €1.1 million salary 2013-14, €1.2 million salary 2014-15, €1.3 million salary 2015-16 and a €1.5 million salary 2015-16."
Amrabat told Turkish newspaper, Star, "I fell in love with Galatasaray during their UEFA Cup 2000 winning campaign.
"I became a Galatasaray supporter aged 13, it was always a dream to play for Galatasaray, a dream which has become a reality.
"I don't have any aspirations of leaving for a club in Europe, my only goal is to play for Galatasaray and retire here, I'd never leave Galatasaray, I love this league and as a muslim its an honour to be playing in the muslim worlds best league" he said.
The Lions have been active in the transfer market looking for a suitable left winger ahead of their Champions League campaign.
Galatasaray struggled down the left side of midfield last season, Albert Riera failed to live up to expectations, forcing Manager Fatih Terim into playing Emre Çolak out of position on the wing.
Amrabat joined Kayserispor from PSV for €1.1 million last season and went onto score six goals as well as make eight assists in 26 games.
Saint-Etienne have fended off competition from Marseille, Lyon and Lille to land the signature of Caen attacking midfielder Romain Hamouma on a four-year, €4m deal.
Following Caen's relegation to Ligue 2, Ligue 1 clubs began to circle to capture the mercurial talents of playmaker Romain Hamouma, and on Thursday the 25-year-old secured his Ligue 1 future by signing a four-year deal worth a reported €4m (including bonuses).
Despite the interest of big clubs such as Marseille, Lyon and Lille, Hamouma explained at his presentation as a Saint-Etienne player that he is thrilled to be a part of coach Christophe Galtier's project.
"I absolutely wanted to come to Saint-Etienne. This club was my first choice," declared Hamouma. "My meetings with the president [Roland Romeyer] and Christophe Galtier convinced me. We have a great team here and we have what it takes to fight it out at the top of the table. I feel really good here. The history of the club is very important and Saint-Etienne lives and breathes football. The fans are awesome. It was an easy decision!"
Hamouma, a graduate of the Sochaux youth academy, has been something of a late bloomer but his standout debut Ligue 1 season with Caen in 2010-11, which saw him score nine goals and lay on another six for his teammates, turned many heads.
Despite interest in his signature, he stayed with the Norman club but couldn't prevent their drop to Ligue 2 at the end of last season and has opted to be a part of a Saint-Etienne project that, under Galtier, has seen the club rise from relegation contenders to a seventh-placed finish last season.
"I'm overjoyed that the negotiations took place with such a feeling of trust and mutual respect," said Romeyer after Hamouma put pen to paper. "I'm also thrilled that a player like Romain, who was a target for several top clubs, has chosen us. This transfer shows that ASSE is an attractive club. Our objective in this transfer window was to secure a complete and competitive squad as early as possible, and that's what we've done."
Hamouma is Les Verts' third signing of the summer transfer window following the capture of France right-back François Clerc from Nice and crafty midfielder Renaud Cohade from Valenciennes
Trabzonspor have completed the transfer of FC Copenhagen striker Dame N'Doye on a four-year deal.
N'Doye will replace Burak Yilmaz upfront, the Turkish Goal King recently joined Galatasaray.
The Senegalese international has had an impressive scoring record at Copenhagen, the prolific striker has been the Danish Superliga's top scorer for two seasons running.
The 27-year-old striker scored 25 goals in 2010-11 and netted 19 times last season. N'Doye still has two-years left on his contract and is valued in the region of €4-5 million.
Trabzonspor finished the league campaign in third position last season, ensuring qualification into the Europa League.
€3.5 million for gago ! i know he hasn't had the best season gone but for that price he could be a steal . I'd take him ahead of most the shite we have in our midfield .
Nottingham Forest are delighted to announce the appointment of Sean O'Driscoll as the Club's new Manager.
He makes a welcome return to The City Ground having had a successful five-month spell at the club last season as First Team Coach.
The club's majority shareholder Fawaz Al Hasawi said: "We interviewed many well-known and high profile figures but we truly believe Sean O'Driscoll is the best man for the job.
"Sean's passion for Nottingham Forest, knowledge of the game and the Championship in particular, plus his work ethic, shone through in our conversations.
"He is hugely respected, not only by members of our current squad and staff at the Club for his work in helping transform our fortunes last season, but also within the wider football community."
The former Republic of Ireland international forged an impressive reputation as a manager and coach during five years in charge of Doncaster.
He guided the South Yorkshire club to promotion to the Championship in 2008 and also led them to glory in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
As a player, O'Driscoll made more than 600 appearances for Fulham and Bournemouth.
He launched his managerial career with Bournemouth in 2000 and three years later steered them to promotion to the then Second Division.
Fawaz Al Hasawi added: "We are delighted to welcome Sean back to the Club. He has our total support and we are looking forward to a long and successful relationship."
Sean O'Driscoll admits he had no hesitation in accepting the opportunity to return to Nottingham Forest.
The 55 year old, who had a five-month spell as The Reds' First Team Coach last season, has today been appointed as the new Manager at The City Ground.
And the former Bournemouth and Doncaster boss told www.nottinghamforest.co.uk: "It was an easy decision to make to return to Nottingham Forest.
"I enjoyed my time working with the players last season, and even in sometimes difficult circumstances the fans gave the kind of support you don't often see in football today.
"The Al Hawasi family's ownership opens exciting prospects for this Club and I look forward to rebuilding the squad and playing the kind of attractive football The City Ground deserves to see."
They're in talks to sign Sergio Canales permanently for €11m too.
Swansea City boss Michael Laudrup has made his third signing of the new campaign by securing the signature of attacking midfielder Michu from Rayo Vallecano for around £2m.
The 26-year-old Spaniard, whose full name is Miguel Perez Cuesta, completed a medical at the Liberty Stadium late yesterday before signing a three-year deal which was completed this afternoon, subject to international clearance.
He returned to Spain last night, but is set to return and join his new team-mates on Sunday for Swansea’s 12-day pre-season tour of America.
The signing is a huge boost for Laudrup’s new Barclays Premier League squad after the 6ft 1in Spaniard scored 15 goals in La Liga last season to earn rave reviews.
His goal-tally saw him help save struggling Rayo from relegation and end the La Liga campaign as the division’s leading marksman from midfield.
“I’m very happy,’’ declared Michu. “I had other offers, but I really wanted to come to Swansea because of the coach (Michael Laudrup), the style of play and the Premier League.
“I’ve always followed the Premier League from Spain and I watched a lot of Swansea games last season. They played good football and I liked their style.
“I also know how Michael Laudrup’s teams play, so I’m looking forward to being part of that. The coach (Laudrup) was fundamental to me joining Swansea. I remember watching him as a player – he was a machine,’’ joked Michu.
“I’m a bit sad to leave Rayo because they gave me my chance in the first division in Spain. I will always be grateful to them for that.
“The supporters have also been good to me. That’s why I wanted to return to Spain last night to thank them personally via a press conference this morning. I wanted to leave in a good way.
“But the chance to play in the Premier League is a fantastic opportunity for me. I believe the Premier League is a better than La Liga, so it’s a chance for me to improve as a player.’’
Michu is also looking forward to meeting fellow new signings Chico and Jonathan de Guzman.
“I know them both from playing against them in La Liga,’’ added Michu. “They are not only good players, but knowing them will also help my adaption to life over here.’’
Michu also confirmed that he had already spoken to Swansea’s Spanish defender Angel Rangel before agreeing to sign.
“We know a mutual friend,’’ he explained, “so we started texting recently. He told me he was very happy here and it was a great club.
“I’ve had a look at the stadium already and it is spectacular. Angel told me it was always full for every game and the fans are very passionate, so I’m really excited about the challenge ahead.’’
Michu began his career with local club Real Oviedo in the lower leagues, before moving to Celta de Vigo B in Segunda División B in 2007.
His contract with Celta expired in June 2011 and he signed a two-year deal with Rayo Vallecano who were freshly promoted to the top division of La Liga.
Physical, tall, hard-working and strong, he became a fans favourite with his ability to time his arrivals into the box earning him 15 league goals and two in the cup.
Richard Keogh says Nigel Clough's determination to secure his signature was one of the main reasons behind his move to Derby County yesterday, and he's desperate to repay his new managers' faith in him.
Keogh held talks with Derby earlier in the week after Coventry City accepted the Rams' undisclosed bid for the central defender, and the 25-year-old was impressed with what he heard.
Despite being linked with a number of Derby's Championship rivals this summer Keogh was heavily impressed with Clough's vision for the Rams, as well as the opportunity to wear the armband for the season in Shaun Barker's absence due to injury.
He told Rams Player: "It was flattering to be linked with so many clubs during the summer, but once I met with the manager here and had the opportunity to speak to him my mind was made up.
"His vision for the Club is exciting and I want to be part of that. He made me feel very wanted and spoke about the role he saw me playing, which was a huge thing for me.
"I also got the meet the owners as well when I came for talks and I had a good chat with them too, although I spent most of the time with the Gaffer talking about football and how he saw me fitting into the set-up here.
"I liked the fact the Gaffer knew everything about me and made it clear I had been his number one target this summer. The amount of homework he had done was flattering and I'd love to repay that faith on the pitch."
Keogh says he's determined to grasp the opportunity to captain Derby with both hands.
It's a role he took on at Coventry last season and he says he is excited about the prospect of leading Clough's young squad into the new season.
He said: "We have a young, hungry team here and he explained how he saw me playing a part in knitting it all together, which is something I'm really excited about.
"I hope I can help the young lads here; it's a great challenge to have at this stage of my career. I don't know too many of them, but I've heard there's a good group with some very good players here so I'm looking forward to getting to know them all.
"I've done it before at Coventry and I feel I can do it again here with some experience behind me in that respect.
"I just want to get my head down now, work hard and get myself in the team to try and bring some success to Derby County because it's been a summer with an awful lot of talk, so it's time to get back to playing football."
Keogh, who was Coventry's Player of the Season for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, has been backed by Clough to relish the opportunity to lead Derby's young side into the new npower Championship season.
"We're going to have one of the youngest average ages in the Championship next season so Richard will wear the armband next season in Shaun's absence," he said.
"It makes perfect sense because he's done the job before and he's a leader. The way he plays the game, as a very good defender, and his mentality both on and off the pitch will fit in perfectly to the group we already have here.
"He's got great honesty and he'll put his body on the line, which we know not only from him playing against us but he has been a long-term target of ours and we've monitored his progress for some time."
Keogh arrives at Pride Park with an outstanding appearance record to his name and Clough believes that, along with his performances in a struggling Coventry side in recent seasons, highlight the type of character the former Stoke City trainee is.
He said: "Richard's appearance record is outstanding and his performance levels have been to a very high standard, and we want him to maintain both of them here at Derby County.
"To play 91 games in a row without missing a minute at Coventry speaks volumes about him, that he'll get himself out there game after game even if he's carrying a knock.
"He's also been in fine form in a struggling side in recent seasons, which isn't always easy by he's been a shining light for Coventry and the interest he's had suggests we're not the only ones to notice that.
"Richard is at a good age as well at 25, so hopefully we're going to see him in his prime for us over the next few years with us."
Michu- Swansea (£2m)
Laudrup said: "It's a fantastic signing. We are talking about a player who scored 15 goals in the Spanish league last year for a small club, who were saved by the bell in the last minute of the last game to avoid relegation.
"He was a big difference for them with his goals.
"We lost (Gylfi) Sigurdsson, who played in that position for half a season, so to sign a player like Michu is fantastic for us when you look at the price and quality of the player.
"It is a bargain.
"When you see the big newspapers in Spain and people commentating on how we can sign a player like that for such a small amount of money, then the Spanish economy must be really bad.
"It's a very difficult moment for clubs in Spain in general and this signing shows that."
Paulo Dybala and Franco Brienza have expressed their joy at completing transfers to Palermo. “This is an important club.”
The Sicilians officially signed 18-year-old Argentine Dybala from Instituto Atletico Central Cordoba.
“I thank the staff and my teammates who have always been close to me and the fans who never lacked in their support,” wrote Dybala on his Twitter account.
“I hope to return one day to the club that allowed me to have this great opportunity. I must prove my worth here, as Palermo is an important club.”
The Rosanero also presented Brienza to the media after he made the move from Siena along with Coach Giuseppe Sannino.
Palermo “want to finish just behind the top clubs and fight for the Champions League” with €12m investment Paulo Dybala, says President Maurizio Zamparini.
The Sicilians officially completed their transfer for Instituto talent Dybala on Friday, hoping he will follow in the footsteps of Javier Pastore.
“We spent €12m for an 18-year-old,” Zamparini told Radio Sportiva. “He looks about 15, but I saw the footage of him playing and wanted to sign him, because I can see in him a player who can make the difference.
“Arevalo Rios will sign over the weekend. He will go to the Olympics as an over-age player and this is why he is late, but is going to sign the contract in London.”
Rios is a 29-year-old Uruguayan international midfielder who is ready to move from Tijuana for €3m.
“Giulio Migliaccio will stay, as he can play in defence too, while Federico Balzaretti will only leave if PSG make an offer. Napoli made an excellent proposal, but he doesn’t want to go, just as he doesn’t intend to join Lazio or Milan.”
Balzaretti’s wife is the prima ballerina at the Paris Opera, so Palermo have repeatedly stated they will only sell the full-back if he makes the move for personal reasons.
“Talk of selling Abel Hernandez to Inter is pure fantasy football. Abel is not on the market, not even for €30m. It’s unfair for big clubs to spread rumours so they can turn a player’s head.
“There is no problem with Fabrizio Miccoli either and I think he will remain with us until the end of his career. The fans are with him, maybe every year he just wants to hear the club is with him too.
“I hope Emiliano Viviano does go to Fiorentina and I am stunned they haven’t made even a slight effort to push the move through. I don’t recognise that club anymore.”
There are reports the goalkeeper, who is a life-long Viola supporter, will hold a crucial meeting with Fiorentina on Tuesday.
“Our objective is to finish just behind the top clubs and fight for the Champions League while keeping our balance sheet in check.”
Twente announced Friday that it has signed striker Dmitri Bulykin on a free transfer from Ajax.
The move comes just two days after star striker Luuk de Jong was sold to Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach.
Bulykin, 32, put pen to paper on a one-year deal at De Grolsch Veste. He netted nine goals in 19 league appearances for Ajax last season and has produced seven goals in 15 matches for the Russian national team.
Marseille have moved quickly to appoint Elie Baup as their new manager.
Baup has signed a two-year deal to replace Didier Deschamps.
Baup, who led Bordeaux to the French title in 1999, returns to Ligue 1 management for the first time since he left Nantes three years ago.
"Elie Baup has been named as coach of Olympique Marseille," a statement on the club's official website read.
"He will lead the first team of Olympique for two seasons."
Baup's arrival at the Stade Velodrome comes amid speculation the club were set to turn to Laurent Blanc, after he opted not to renew his contract following Les Bleus' Euro 2012 quarter-final exit.
Baup, 57, has, however, instead been entrusted with reviving the club despite spending the past couple of seasons as a TV pundit.
Aside from his successful stint at Bordeaux, Baup has also managed St Etienne and Toulouse before his last stint at Nantes, which lasted a single year.
Baup, famed for wearing a cap on the touchline, inherits an OM side that finished 10th last season - at one point enduring a 14-match winless run - although another successful cup defence saw them qualify for the Europa League.
Hull City have signed veteran Senegalese defender Abdoulaye Faye on a one-year deal.
The 34-year-old played 29 times in the Championship for West Ham last term but was released by the Hammers at the end of the season.
He has Premier League experience with Bolton, Newcastle and Stoke.
Tigers boss Steve Bruce said: "He brings experience and if you look at our squad we don't have a lot of that at the moment."
Faye added: "I am very happy to be here and to have signed for Hull City. It is a fresh challenge for me and one that I am greatly looking forward to.
"I spent time watching Hull last season and they played very well. We have plenty of talented young players in the squad and I think I can complement them with my experience.
"Experience can count for a lot in football. I have played for several years in the Premiership, with last year being my first in the Championship.
"I think that in some ways the Championship is even tougher as it is played at such a frantic pace, and is very physical.
"Steve Bruce is a great manager with a fantastic record and, when he spoke to me about his ambitions for the club, it was easy for me to make up my mind."
Reportedly €10m
Tottenham midfielder Massimo Luongo has joined Town on a season long loan.
The 19-year-old was at Portman Road today to complete the paperwork and take a look around the ground.
Capped twice by Australia at U20 level, he joined Spurs in January 2011 after impressing on trial at the London club - where he came under the supervision of then Tottenham Academy coach, now Blues' Academy director, Bryan Klug.
Massimo, who prefers an anchor role in the middle of the park, made his first-team debut in Tottenham's Carling Cup penalty shoot-out defeat by Stoke last season.
The teenager will train with his new team-mates for the first time tomorrow and could be included in the squad for Wednesday's friendly against Cambridge.
"Joining Ipswich on loan is a great opportunity for me and I'm really looking forward to challenging for a first-team place here," Massimo told the Club website.
New Nottingham Forest manager Sean O'Driscoll has moved quickly to make his first signing by landing fans favourite Adlene Guedioura from Wolves, subject to the player passing a medical.
The Reds have paid an undisclosed fee for the Algerian international, who made such a big impact while on loan at The City Ground last season.
Guedioura made 19 appearances for the Club after arriving in January and scored the goal that set Forest on their way to a remarkable 7-3 win at Leeds.
Forest Chairman Omar Al Hasawi said: "The Al Hasawi family is delighted to have secured Adlene Guedioura as Nottingham Forest's first signing under our ownership.
"He made a huge impact on the team last year and is just the kind of exciting player that we want to see gracing the City Ground this season."
