Clint Dempsey

And btw Ryan, how typical of you to drag up something you disagreed with, but not mentioned in the post, instead of engaging with the actual post in front of you (which I take it, you agreed with). And you wonder why everyone thinks you're a tosser.

Mac, your post was hardly a novel idea. I've been banging on about interchanging forward for fucking YEARS. I thought it was hilarious that you've came to this conclusion of how the front 3 in a 4-3-3 should work, as if I haven't been preaching it for fucking months (not to mention the Gerrard idea getting the boot).

And no, I don't wonder why you or "everyone" might think I'm a tosser. I couldn't give a clean fuck about what people on the internet think of me. It's pretty clear in my posts that I don't type here to be liked mate.

Anyway, I'd really fucking prefer if this didn't degenerate into another argument. Apologies if my initial response to you seemed accusing or a dig, it wasn't meant to be.

That's why we've got to put him in the middle and tell him to goal hang!

Let Suarez, Borini and Aissidi do the tricky stuff, let Stevie put it in the back of the net, simples!

The problem is, we can't have a midfielder who 'does things in spurts' in this system. Midfielders need to constantly harry and constrict space. Front players are also reponsible for this, of course, but actually it is less damaging if they 'play in spurts'.

Is correct.

He doesn't play in spurts, he makes runs & does that great show of strength to power past players whilst retaining the ball in spurts. I think he's capable of playing that constant pressing & harrying game but not every single match, we need to be able to rest him very regularly, & as the odds are he'll be injured it will be vital to have an adequate replacement, so if someone else has been playing there it'll have less of an impact.

This. As much as we have to be careful not to forget that the man is getting older, we also need not to write him off too much too quickly.

Correct, but some of us don't agree that it's as simple as saying he "can't". He certainly wouldn't manage it every single week, but that's a rather different matter.

Gerrard has pressed & harried his entire career, he's easily the most intelligent player I've seen, which is the reason at his best he could literally (that word used in the correct sense, not the modern day version thrown about) play in any outfield position*

That intelligence means he'll easily fit into the system, as well as being flexible enough to know when he can play a longer ball, or play a riskier through ball into space instead of an easy past, which is something I fear many of our players will not be able to do.

*I still think he could make an outstanding play carrying centre back in the next year or so, but most people think I'm quite mad!

I'm not writing him off, but actually looking at Ryan's definition of a front 3 player in this system "They're all quick, can run with the ball, can beat a man, can move things forward 40 yards, can stretch sides, tricky, can score goals" I don't see why Gerrard doesn't tick pretty much all of these boxes. He's still got very decent pace- compared to say Nani or Nasri, for instance. He also can score, and certainly did have that terrific knack of ghosting past players to do so. I think he does it less because he hasn't got the engine to make gut-busting runs from midfield and still have the calmness to do something magical. Playing him further forward might allow him to do this more often, because frankly, I haven't seen him have a dominant CM performance in a long time. I certainly don't see why it isn't worth a try.

Rodgers' pursuit of Dempsey

The Londoners have reported the Anfield boss to the Premier League for his public courting of the wantaway American international

Fulham have made an official complaint to the Premier League about Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, Goal.com can reveal.

The London club have taken action against Rodgers for revealing in a press conference that Liverpool had enquired about buying Clint Dempsey.

Fulham believe that Rodgers has broken Premier League rules by his public courting of Dempsey.

The complaint was registered last month and was discussed at the July meeting of the Premier League board, which consists of Richard Scudamore, Sir Dave Richards, Nic Coward and Mike Foster.

Fulham’s action is believed to have been made specifically against Rodgers rather than Liverpool or the club’s American owners Fenway Sports Group.

In a statement to Goal.com on Thursday, the Premier League said: “The Premier League has received a complaint from Fulham FC regarding certain comments made by Liverpool FC officials and is currently looking into the matter.”

The Premier League’s first step is to write to all parties before the board decides whether to take further action.

Fulham took exception to comments made by Rodgers to the media last month when he was pressed about his interest in Dempsey.

The United States international had been heavily linked to Liverpool up to that point, culminating in a website belonging to the club’s owners Fenway Sports Group publishing a story on July 18 claiming he was a Liverpool player.

The story was hastily removed but Rodgers addressed the subject at a press conference the same day.

“Clint is a player we've inquired about, it is as simple as that,” Rodgers said. “Ian Ayre, our managing director, has spoken with the club to see what the position is. That is where we're at. He's a very talented player but we don't like to talk about other clubs' players.”

Goal.com revealed earlier this month that Dempsey has been training on his own at Fulham after pulling out of the club’s pre-season training camp in Switzerland.

His comments don't really seem that bad to be honest...

Fucking hell. It isn't exactly in Arry's league is it?

"Smashin playa. Of course we'd love im ere. Welcome im wid open arms we would. I'd drive to Fulham and pick im up myself." etc. etc.

from reading what BR said - i see no difference between that and any other comments made by other managers when asked. what will fullham get out of this ? the worse thing we have done is fsg saying dempsey plays for us on the website.

There's absolutely no consistency. As has been said, Redknapp talked incessantly about other clubs' players and nothing was done.

They didn't say that. Nesn, which is owned by fsg said we were interested. They can claim correctly it is actually a separate entity that reports many false rumours.

Mirro's Andy Dunn:

A Premier League manager once called and asked me to mention to a young player – who happened to be an acquaintance of mine – that his club might be interested in his services.

If so, would the said young player be keen?

I relayed the message – and the young player did not believe me.

His reservations were duly relayed to the manager, who requested his keenness was reiterated.

It was. And still the teenager was not convinced.

Growing mildly exasperated – and with better things to do – I suggested the middleman was culled.

Here is the youngster’s number. Call him yourself.

He did.

And still the kid did not believe. To the extent that I got a call from him.

“Andy. Hilarious. I’ve just had a call from a mate of yours pretending to be *********. Great wind-up. But you are not getting me on that one. I told him where to go!”

And the move never happened.

I recalled this sequence of events when Fulham lodged a complaint with the Premier League about Liverpool’s behaviour in the Clint Dempsey affair.

I have no sympathy with Dempsey. But the notion that tapping-up should still be one of football’s white collar crimes is ridiculous.

The Premier League will have to be seen to be taking it seriously, but, hopefully, it will really be concerning itself with issues that really matter.
