What a fucking farce.
Liverpool allowed Andy Carroll to join West Ham United for the rest of this season last night and immediately launched a bid to take Daniel Sturridge on loan from Chelsea.
An attempt to sign Clint Dempsey from Fulham had faltered earlier because of a lack of funds and Jordan Henderson’s refusal to act as a makeweight in the proposed deal.
Less than two years after becoming the most expensive British player when he joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in a £35 million transfer, Carroll has moved on loan with West Ham paying a £1 million fee and covering the 23-year-old England striker’s £80,000-a-week wages.
The lack of a significant transfer fee for Carroll left Brendan Rodgers having to wheel and deal as he sought a replacement, and after Henderson backed out of a move to Craven Cottage, the Liverpool manager was faced with the prospect of missing out on Dempsey, his prime target.
That deal now appears unlikely, with Sunderland hoping to complete a £7 million cash deal for the United States forward and Arsenal also registering an interest — a situation that has forced Rodgers to enter the loan market.
As a result, Liverpool started negotiations with Chelsea over Sturridge just 24 hours after the former Swansea City manager ruled out a move for the 22-year-old, having been informed that he was valued at more than £15 million.
Entering the final day of the transfer window, Rodgers was unable to provide any guarantees that Liverpool — who qualified for the Europa League group stage last night courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate win over Heart of Midlothian — will be able to supplement his squad, despite his admission that the need for new additions is urgent.
“I’ve been given as much confidence as I can possibly get that we will have someone to come in,” Rodgers said. “I’ve said all along that I have Luis Suárez and Fabio Borini as frontline strikers and the young lads like Adam Morgan are getting experience, but between now and January I need more than that. Hopefully we can do some work and get something complete because we certainly need it. I am hoping for one or two. We need one, that’s for sure.”
Charlie Adam and Jay Spearing are expected to leave Liverpool today, with Adam set to complete a £4 million transfer to Stoke City and Spearing close to completing a season-long loan move to Bolton Wanderers. Joe Cole, though, has determined to stay and fight for his place despite being informed by Rodgers that he has no future at the club.
Carroll had received a similar indication from Rodgers and yesterday accepted his fate by agreeing a temporary switch to Upton Park, but only after insisting that he would not sign for West Ham permanently at this stage.
“It’s great to be here at West Ham and all signed up — I just can’t wait to get started,” Carroll said. “I want to be playing games and obviously hoping to score some goals. I know the manager [Sam Allardyce] well and some of the lads, so it is nice to come to a place where I know people.
“I’m hoping to add a lot of goals and create a few chances. Sam Allardyce was a massive reason for me coming here. When I worked with him at Newcastle it was great, so it was a no-brainer really.”
Rodgers was similarly emphatic in his reasoning, revealing that the decision to allow Carroll to depart had been a “simple” one premised on the England striker’s need for regular first-team football and the attraction to Liverpool of getting another high earner off their books.
“Andy wanted this to be a season where he was going to be playing regularly, and I couldn’t guarantee that,” Rodgers added. “He’s got the chance to demonstrate his qualities. It allows us to move on and then we’ll assess it over the course of the season.
“He’s a good guy, has worked well in training, but I can only pick 11 players and I’ve got some wonderful talents here like Luis Suárez.”
