If we don't sign hum it has shades of the Barry saga about it.
We tap the player up, he wants to come goes public then we back out and hang him out to dry.
I hope that us not the case and I hope we sign him

Fulham boss Martin Jol says he hopes Clint Dempsey has a change of heart and plays for the club again.

Dempsey has made it clear he wants to leave Craven Cottage, with Liverpool seemingly keen to sign the him.

And Jol suggested that the American did not want to play in Fulham’s opening-day match against Norwich, who were thumped 5-0 at Craven Cottage.

“He wants to move and if you want to move you don’t want to take risks and don’t want to play,” said Jol.

“It was a very awkward situation for us and for him. He didn’t want to play because of a situation with another club.

“But what was more awkward is that there is no actual bid or offer from any club. Someone has told him Liverpool want him and his head was turned but for us there was nothing on the table – maybe Clint knows more than us.”

The Dutchman added: “We feel, and the players feel, he should stay if there is no bid.

“In a normal world you have to stay where you are because you signed your contract. Hopefully he will play for us again.”

Dempsey, who scored 23 goals last term, did not feature in today's game after he refused to play for Fulham in the hope that it would accelerate a transfer to Liverpool.

The Cottagers coped admirably without him as they ruined Chris Hughton's first game in charge of Norwich by recording a 5-0 thrashing courtesy of goals from Damien Duff, Steve Sidwell, Alex Kacaniklic and double from debutant Mladen Petric.

The home fans greeted Fulham's fifth strike - a fierce penalty from Sidwell - by chanting 'Are you watching Clint Dempsey?', clearly delighted they had proven they can easily do without the American's services.

But Jol, whose team sit top of the embryonic Barclays Premier League, feels the 29-year-old deserves more respect from the fans despite his recent rebellion.

"I don't want to hear the fans were chanting against him because he was a terrific player for us," Jol told a press conference.

"He was the most productive midfield player in the whole league last season."

Jol launched a furious attack on Liverpool yesterday for failing to follow up their initial interest in Dempsey with a firm bid for the player.

The Dutchman said yesterday that it was "impossible" for Dempsey to remain at Craven Cottage, but he now seems open to the possibility of the midfielder staying.

"Hopefully he will play for us again," the Fulham boss added.

"There is one season to go (on his contract) and no one has come in for him.

"To say he refused to play is probably a bit harsh but he wanted to move and if you want to move, you don't want to take risks so you don't want to play in case you get an injury. So for me that was a very awkward situation and it was for him as well.

"There is nothing on the table from Liverpool. Maybe Clint knows more than us but we feel he should stay if there is no other bid."

I'm sure everyone was thinking last Saturday that if we had Dempsey everything would be okay.

Signing him is pointless

Dempsey's a good player, but we need different types of player to him.

We've got Allen, Gerrard, and Suarez who can all play the number 10 role that Dempsey's best suited to.

I might have mentioned this before, who knows, but I actually think we need good players for the wide positions in the front 3. Stop me if you've heard this before btw.

I like Dempsey a lot. I really do, and hes a Texan and I love the Texans strength of character.
But we need much better than him. It was clear to see on Saturday.
Hes another in the long line of waste of fucking money transfers.
And I would definately prefer Rhodes.

Dempsey is A BIT better than Downing.

Don't think I have if I'm being honest.
Please, do tell us.

lets face it Clint would have scored a couple of piss easy headers for us on Saturday, suarez is shocking in the air. Ooo wait a minute Carroll would have scored those as well.

I just think Suarez and Borini are a similar type of creative/tricky/score a few players, not going to get us 20 goals a season

Borini is the polar opposite of Suarez, have you seen them play?

btw, would I be right in thinking Dempsey can play with LW, RW or CAM?

Yeah, mostly left and CAM though. I think we'd gone for Sahin and Tello/Assman instead of dempsey but now Sahin has fallen through we've returned. Could be wrong like but that's the way I see it. The Dempsey stuff cooled off and next minute we're linked with a midfielder and a winger.

I can't see us getting Johnson anyway, I think he'll go to Spurs, unfortunately.

Well you've said it before but it's no less true.

Those wide positions must have quality in to get past the defence. Without them you can have all the possession you want & play great football but you'll rarely have an end product, this was Swansea's problem last season. We dont even have their ability in the other areas, so quality upfront may mask that whilst the rest of the team adjust.

That's why I'd have no problem with us loaning out players of a quality we cant afford or attract yet for those positions.

I think he's more suited to be central and I really think if Suarez started on the left Saturday with him up top we'd have won. But we need options up top and he can fill all 3 spots.

It's all great saying that Borini would have finished all those chances if he played in the middle, but the reason nearly all of those chances were created is because Suarez was in the middle and his superb movement or skill fashioned the chances. Out wide Suarez won't be able to do what he does anywhere near as effectively and we'll look even more toothless.

Of course suarez would be able to do it. He's a boss.

It is the reason Suarez gets forgiven for missing so many opportunities. That is, because he creates the vast majority of them for himself. Once Suarez starts scoring (and I'm still vaguely optimistic that he will at some point), he'll be unstoppable.

I disagree that he would be wasted in one of the wide positions, though. He regularly drifts into wide areas anyway, and he's quite capable of cutting inside. When we bought Borini, I was under the impression that Rodgers planned to play him through the middle.
