Chelsea Post Match Goodness..

Wasn't the knock on Wijnaldum, that he disappeared in away games?

Doesn't seem to be the case, does it? He started his LFC career somewhat cautiously, but was improving little by little in each game. Last night was the first time he looked truly dominant for some periods of the game.

Going back to my post about the shift towards attacking players in modern football, before this season I could never have imagined that we could go to Stamford Bridge with the central midfield 2 of Henderson and Wijnaldum and not just avoid disaster, but actually totally outplay their midfield (for most of the game).

Was it @Woland who said not long ago he wished we had Kante instead of "Horrenderson"? 🙂

Yes

Origi 6.0 Can I just take issue with @manwithnoname's post in the match thread? Origi is a young player who won the crucial Dortmund game for us last season and scored other important goals – he doesn't deserve the venom directed towards him. Could have won the game for us, except for a phenomenal save by Courtois – I can't remember the last time I saw a goalkeeper save a header down low.
Well said. That venom, and the support it received, was a little bizarre.

He was poor tonight but I back him. I'm confident he'll prove himself to be a big player for this club. He has everything a top striker needs and the perfect coach to get the best out of him.

The team played very well against one of the title challengers. That win was a six-pointer, and we need more of the same from the traditional top 6. Special mention goes to Milner. He worked tirelessly again and stopped one of Chelsea's quickest counters in the second half.

Is it just me or are the 'leaks' about team selection plugged?

2 games in a row now we only got to know about an injury when the lineups were announced. Usually we will hear about injuries before the game.

Having watched Conte's post game interview, I would be genuinely scared if I was one of his players. That hushed tone of voice doesn't spell anything good for anyone, particularly the defenders. Conte is an insane perfectionist and losing at home while conceding sloppy goals will physically pain him and he'll make somebody pay.

I also think he was perhaps too enraged or shocked to think straight during the game – that triple substitution with 7 minutes to go (but leaving Batshuayi on the bench) didn't make much sense and didn't work.

I hope the knobheads leaking lineups are carrying injuries.

Reading through the match thread again its just weird. Origi wasnt that bad but you'd think he was the worst player on the pitch by some of these comments.
He worked quite hard with pressing and nearly scored the third goal. Great header stopped with a brilliant save.

If Brendan starts a Origi thread next week, he'll score 2 goals against Hull and get into form again. Here's hoping.

Gerard Houllier always said 2 points a game you will compete for the title.
Yep...I always look at how close we are to two points a game. During THAT season under Rodgers my belief increased everytime we extended further away from 2 per game. It'll definitely get CL qualification and with a bit of momentum you'd be challenging for the title. These are good times.

I remember after the Burnley we are writing our selves off and now after a couple of wins we are hailing ourselves as presumed champions. It's too early to call anything and there's plenty of banana skin fixtures.
Derby, Hull and Man Utd game will tell us more

I noticed a couple people said this would represent a stern examination of our midfield before the game along with myself and if that was the case, you'd have to say we passed with flying colours. Thought all three were very good though Henderson did enough for all three, which I think he had to at times if I'm being honest.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Can is back and fully fit. I think everyone had him as the midfield lynchpin at the start of the season (I did at least) and now... does he walk straight back into the side? I don't think he does. Not as things stand anyways.

What's happened to Chelsea though? We played well but on their part that was a little reminiscent of the half-assed displays they put in last season under Mourinho.

Ivanovic started with a bizarre series of clumsy challenges - almost like he was trying to make a statement as captain and win over the fans. Whatever it was, he failed and looked a fading force.

And Matic? What's happened to this guy? In that first season he back he looked ready to dominate.

I wonder how much Pedro regrets leaving Barca. I forgot he even played for them till he lined up to come on.

Anyways, great game and great start to the season but I'm keeping my expectations well in check. We've been down this road before. I know we can beat the big boys... let's see us put in some consistent performances against the rest.

Cant remember who but someone said Chelsea were so focused on making it difficult for us that they forgot to play football. The first half looked exactly like that.

Conte will murder someone on the training field after that first goal. For an Italian a goal like that must hurt like crazy. 4 players on their own when that cross comes in. That would never happen with Juve or Italy. Never.

Conte looked a bit shell shocked after that first half. 3 subs in the 84th minute. No Batshuiyuouwhatisface. Weird.

I don't know about anyone else, but I was surprised by the way we not only dominated them in terms of passing the ball with more purpose, but you saw the likes of Lallana, Henderson and Wijnaldum dominate them physically too. This is a big, athletic Chelsea side, who as ever resemble an expensively constructed Stoke, who look at their most threatening from setpieces.

Our lads applied themselves well in three respects - in possession, physically and in terms of having a plan B and slowing the game down and taking the sting out of them at the right time. All of the recent criticism about only having a franetic side to our game, with no sense of control, went out the window in one game. We played like champions.

Ok, so they got a goal, but they're a good team, you give good players half a chance and they will take advantage, every team has to deal with that and few teams keep the big sides out completely. It was about as measured and assured as we've looked under Klopp.

@rurikbird made a really interesting post (should really have started a thread with it) about this 'new' brand of football– flooding the midfield with technically excellent attacking players instead of traditional midfielders whose job is to dominate the patch around the centre of the pitch. With Kante and Matic in midfield Chelsea, on paper, were all about controlling the midfield in that traditional way. With Lallana, Coutinho and Gini with Hendo pulling the strings we had them chasing shadows at times last night.

Yup, City lining up the same way.

If Chelsea are an expensively assembled Stoke then City are an expensively assembled version of us.

Looking forward to and dreading playing them in equal measure.

It was Carra in the post match analysis. Spot on. They looked so focused on how to stop us rather than how they were set up to play.

One thing I have noticed in our football so far this season is just how quick we move the ball around in midfield, maybe that's the reason a traditionally dominant midfield can't touch this new style of midfield as Rurik puts it. Our passing was insanely quick and precise, and it was all one or two touches, it was a little hard to keep up with it at times, it was almost like watching a game of FIFA. It's an absolute joy to watch, but my worry is that it only takes one small mistake for it all to break down such is the precision in our play, and as the season goes on teams will figure out how to make us make that mistake.

I think the idea was to hit us quickly on the break once the ball was turned over. However what really impressed me was the way we anticipated their attacks and snuffed them out quickly, particularly Matip who looks as if he can read the game really well, something we have missed since Carra retired. The more I see Matip the more he reminds me of Jockey.
