I can't see it happening.

It's not like he's desperate. He could stay at one of the best clubs in the world if he wanted to and compete for the games finest trophies. Alonso left us when we were significanty better than we are now. I cannot see why the challenge of restoring us to a top four position would be all that appealing.

He's been wanting to come back for almost two years now.

Sorry guys - he's going to Galatassary according to the dream I had last night.

Selling Alonso was a major step backward in our development.

I'd love to have him back.

major step backward in our development.... yeah.... it was that alright.

I doubt very much he will move as i'm sure that he is appreciated in Madrid as he is in the national team. Cracking player...

If of course they were to let him move on we should try and get him without doubt, players that good are very few and very far between and with the style of play he exhibits declining mobility would not be the killer blow it is for others.

Hey your Honor! I'm reminded of that disturbing scene in "Knight's Tale" when Paul Bettany's character is introduced walking nude down the road; when asked what he's doing, he replies "I'm trudging." About sums it up. You?

I agree, and LA has been looking for the next big (aging) midfield name for a while now. I much rather they get Lampard.

Will PM you.

RM already looking for replacement?

Real Madrid has started to look for a replacement for Xabi Alonso in view of the fact that he hasn't extended his contract, which expires in June 2014. The player that best fits the bill in the backrooms of the club is Ilkay Gündogan, the 22 year-old Borussia Dortmund midfielder and German international.

The youngster is the brains of Jürgen Klopp's team and has turned into an exceptional player this season, really top class material, with the ability to emulate Xabi Alonso's style of play. He's a strong, dynamic player with the vision and skill to play long through balls, and clearly has talent.

Gündogan joined Borussia Dortmund to fill the vacancy left by Nuri Sahin when the latter signed for Real Madrid in 2011 and in no time at all has sealed his reputation as one of the most promising midfielders in Europe.

Aside from his being a truly interesting proposition in his own right and Real Madrid's need to fill this position, his transfer presents itself as being relatively straightforward from a financial point of view.

Real Madrid is on excellent terms with Borussia Dortmund. Furthermore, the German team currently has Sahin on loan, following a stint at Liverpool, with an option to buy the player for €5.5 million which expires in 2014. This fact could speed up Gündogan's signing, and as the player earns €1.5 million, it wouldn't necessarily be an expensive transfer deal.

Gundogan cannot possibly replace Alonso and what he brings to the team, but he can be a good substitute for Modric, who is a real replacement for Xabi as a deep-lying playmaker for Real. In truth, for all his great virtues, Xabi is a little too defensively oriented for a position of creative midfielder in a team like Real. Modric playing as a DLP will allow them to become less of a counterattacking team and more of a dominating team, which is what their fans want as much as winning titles.

If Sahin wins his old job back in Borussia, then they might well cash in on Gundogan and everyone will be happy.

Gundogan's a lovely little player, but I wonder how Modric and him are going to really mesh in a midfield two. Seems way too lightweight.

Anyway, as long as Xabi comes to us, I'm happy.

No, I meant one of them (presumably Modric, most of the time) playing next to Khedira or another DM.
