Chabby Alonso

no one is denying he is great, but we desperately need a strong cb. in my view if you offered me a choice between spending the money on a cb or a cm, I would pick cb. As i said before, ideally we could have both, but its a question of priority.

I still think the problem isn't completely Agger and Skrtel's and more a lack of leadership/protection/composure from the defensive midfield position. Hence why I think Chabby will make a huge difference.

I gladly put my hand up and admit that I was one of those who thought we got a good deal selling alonso - I was wrong. however, I am unsure him coming back at this stage would work. I suppose it's all about the money/cost. A free alonso is a no-brainer. a 12m alonso is another matter.

Refusing to pay £12m for Alonso would be one of the maddest things the world has ever seen.

Nope. It's still a no brainer, because it's Xabi Alonso and he's quality. That said, I can't see why he would want to leave Real Madrid for a side struggling to make the Europa League. It would be madness on his part, not on ours.

I may be a bit naive but is it really mad to return to a place you were most happy at?

I say £12m(even though the figure was just taken from thin air) would be a steal of the century. He can still play 5 years at the top level.

Woland is right though. Better not get your hopes up too much.

Oh god.

Anfield de vuelta? Liverpool following Xabi Alonso contract row 9 Mar 2013 12:02
Four years after leaving Merseyside, the Real Madrid midfielder is being monitored by his former club

Somebody save me: Alonso is reportedly keen for a Premier League return
Angel Martinez
Xabi Alonso could be set for a Liverpool return according to reports in Spain.
The midfielder left the Reds in 2009 after a successful spell at Anfield, but the five-year deal that he signed at the Bernabeu expires in 2014 and although Madrid have been in discussions with his agent Iñaki Ibañez since November, there is no agreement in sight.
According to Spanish daily AS, the Bernabeu club would like to extend Alonso's contract until 2016, but the midfielder is reportedly keen to see how things lie at the end of the season, re-evaluating his future with potentially a new manager in place.
On Wednesday, Spanish radio station Onda Cero claimed that the World Cup winner, 31, had in fact set his heart on a Premier League return, and that his representatives had held talks in Manchester last week over a possible move back to England - with finances a secondary concern.
Yet any deal will be obstructed by Real Madrid's reluctance to sell a player that they still see as a key part of their plans.

1 year left on his contract. He'll go for 10 mill I reckon.

He would add experience and leadership to a team thats losing 1 of its biggest contributors in that area.
Sign him. No brainer.

We never get it fully right anyways. If Alonso arrives then Suarez will be off. It's this weird karmic cycle we're in.

Guillem Balague was on Twitter saying there was no truth in these rumours though...

That actually makes me believe there might be truth in these rumours.

I'd like to see a list of Ballbag's predictions next to the actual outcome. He makes Alex Jones look like a soothsayer.

After a copious alcohol intake, I've decided to assume his representatives met with Liverpools representatives in Manchester because all the flights to The John Lennon were booked. Otherwise I can see myself waking at 3am screaming 'Xavi!!! Keep away from hose MANCHESTEDR CUNTS', thus giving the wife the perfect excuse to use her new stun-gun.

There's no point in a Xabi Alonso Youtube complication. His talents cannot be expressed in 3 minutes of highlights. It doesn't showcase how he demanded a brilliant first touch off anyone he passed it to, because he played it to their strongest foot regardless of whether it was a four yard pass or a forty yard pass; It does't highlight his tireless defensive running which went too often unnoticed during his time here, nor his extreme ability not only to play an amazing pass, but the *right* pass. Nor his ability to step up his performances whenever Gerrard was absent from the side: Xabi became our leader on the pitch.

Brendan summed Xabi Alonso up best when he said Xabi Alonso is a Rolls Royce of a footballer. He's absolutely brilliant.

Would be a massive statement of intent if we managed to bring Xabi back.

Fair enough, he's not in his mid 20s anymore but he's got a few years in him yet and his game isn't based on pace.

ALONSO: ...then there's shopping, hmmm, I need milk, cheese, steak, peppers, potatoes...
TORRES: I need your full attention!

I should also point out that if we'd made him player manager at the time, we'd have won the title by now.

I thought that was Ryan, talking about Joe Allen.

There's a hell of lot of players described as Rolls-Royce players. I gave up calling them that years ago. But Xabi would enrich this squad so greatly I just hope FSG show sense, or listen to their 'secret advisor' Rush, and get him.
