Chabby Alonso

The tactic of deploying Wellbeck onto him worked very well for Utd for the first 60 mins.

It was a massive compliment to Alonso that Ferguson effectively dropped Rooney cos he was so worried of Alonso dictating the game from deep.

Yup but he was mishitting passes when he did get the ball. Think he wasn't at his best regardless and that's from a huge huge fan.

He's always looked like he's been playing the game for years for me. Fantastic positionally, great awareness and brilliant passer of the ball.

In the summer spending thread I was trying to think of which up and comer we could get that is Alonso-esque but we probably do need someone who has that experience to guide this, as Macca said, rather naive side.

Looking back, what a great unveiling that was. And, though I prefer the Standard Chartered logo, what a nice kit that was too.
The Standard Chartered logo is shite.

Cheers for the dough and all that, but fucking jarg design.

I agree the actual 'logo' part is a bit meh (It would be better if it just said Standard Chartered, and no squiggles), but the layout is much neater and presentable than the Carlsberg logo IMO. I was never a big fan of the stupid font, and the crappy extended G.

Also, while I'm not a huge fan of the banking sector, it is better having a bank (one of the world's biggest) as sponsor's than a beer company.

I watched a documentary about Laurie Cunningham (ex-WBA, Real Madrid...) last night.

He came on as sub in the '88 FA Cup Final for Wimbledon....who were sponsored by Carlsberg !

Freaked me out.

I was going to post about this, I'm surprised it's not got a mention elsewhere. What a great documentary, some heart warming interviews in there from Barnes, Fashanu and Bright and co. Quite odd seeing "Racist Ron" talk so warmly about his 'friend' though.

Been linked with a return to Anfield this morning. Apparently stalling on a new contract.

You guys getting hopes up! Who would you offload to accommodate him as he has probably at best has 2-3 seasons left in him?

Alonso and Gerrard in the middle, Suarez behind Sturridge, Coutinho on one wing, Downing replacement on the other, Lucas, Allen and Hendo as squad members. That'll do me!

I gladly put my hand up and admit that I was one of those who thought we got a good deal selling alonso - I was wrong. however, I am unsure him coming back at this stage would work. I suppose it's all about the money/cost. A free alonso is a no-brainer. a 12m alonso is another matter.

£12million is a steal for Chabby, he's currently a starter for the biggest club in the world and the reigning European and World Champions. My only issue with this move is that Henderson needs to give him back his number 14 shirt.

If we're rolling in dosh, then maybe you're right. however, if it is a choice between spending that money on a cb or his position, the situation becomes very different.

No it doesn't, he's one of the best midfielders in the world and its a position we badly need someone with his abilities, we lack composure in the first third of the pitch, and Chabby is the epitome of composure.

no one is denying he is great, but we desperately need a strong cb. in my view if you offered me a choice between spending the money on a cb or a cm, I would pick cb. As i said before, ideally we could have both, but its a question of priority.
